So I am new to this whole analogue/digital TV debacle and am living in Bochum and all I wish for is some English coming out of my television. I have bought an analogue satelite receiver box and it works fine for MTV and CNN but I want to be able to get BBC Prime,BBC 1/2 ITV1/2 etc how do I do this? Do I have to get a dish and where do I put that?! Or do I just need a digital box to plug into the cable coming from my wall? I am blonde so go easy!

Thanks! wacko.gif

You'll need a Free-to-air card and a digibox I'd recommend talking to Satman (PM him) ...he'll put you right wink.gif
jg.
This should cover everything...

Terrestrial Analogue - via a normal TV aerial (can be a shared one, feeding a bunch of flats)
Some German TV channels

Terrestrial Digital
More German TV channels

Cable (Analogue or Digital)
This varies by area and depends on the offerings of the local cable TV company. Can be a few channels or many channels, including some English channels, according to how much you pay per month.

Satellite dish pointed at Astra1 (like most dishes in Germany, including the shared ones)

Satellite Analogue
Not much on analogue now as analogue is being phased out.

Satellite digital
Loads of channels (2000 or so) including channels for Germany, Spain France, etc. - but only CNN, BBC Prime and BBC World and Sky News from UK. Many free german TV channels (similar to the offerings from terrestrial digital) and then there is Premiere, the German equivalent of Sky, with various packages at various prices.

Satellite dish pointed at Astra2 (Unlike most dishes in Germany, especially the shared ones)

Satellite Analogue
Nothing at all.

Satellite digital - any FTA receiver
BBC1, 2, 3 & 4, BBC News24, CBBC, etc
ITV 1 & 2
Sky News, CNN
Some crappy speciallised channels.
Loads of UK radio stations.

Satellite digital - SKY Digibox with a FTV card (i.e. one time cost for the card, no subscription)
The same as for the FTA receiver but also Channel 4 and Channel 5 (I can't think of any other FTV channels at present).

Satellite digital - SKY Digibox with a SKY card and subscription
All of the above plus whatever is included in the package you subscribe to - have a look at www.sky.com.

To get a FTV card or a SKY subscription, you need to have a UK address or pay a premium for a German firm to arrange this for you. Probably the most popular option is to buy a secondhand SKY Digibox in the UK and arrange a subscription or an FTV card for it at a UK addresss. You then bring the card and Digibox to Germany and have a competent installer point a dish at the correct satellite.

Before you start - find out if you can get a dish pointing at Astra 2 (are there trees in the way, is your balcony facing the right way, will your landlord/fellow tenants allow you to have a dish pointed to a satellite that has no Ooompah music channels, etc.). There are many threads on this topic...
