why oh why don't they clean it up?

As some of you may know, we got a puppy about 5 1/2 weeks ago. In the course of taking her out for her daily walks, I've noticed that I am quite obviously the only person (aka "idiot") who always cleans up after her dog. huh.gif

The area round here is v. nice, perfect for walking your dog - there are vinyards (where there's no traffic), fields + orchards and lots of not busy back streets, but everywhere you go there is dog shit. It's DISGUSTING! Even if it's not on the pavement ie on a little verge of grass or something - it's still disgusting, isn't it?!

I'm pretty sure that it's illegal in Germany for dog owners not to clear up after their dogs - so why do none of them do it? Ok, there are no designated dog-litter-bins around here, but still. What happened to the sticking-to-the-rules Germans that we all know and love? dry.gif

I know we've had this topic before, but I still don't get why it's not cleared away. Can someone tell me where to find this law in writing - I'm going to print it out and put it up in the areas where it's particularly bad mad.gif

Probably because its not explicity "Verboten"!

My daughter came home from the Spielplatz yesterday after putting her hand in a pile of dog shite. Disgusting!!!
I don't know how the shit got there as all dog owners are all responsible people who would never let their beloved dogs shit anywhere near a childrens playground.
I just don't understand why anybody would want to own a dog as a pet and let it wipe its shitty arse all over the carpets. Ekelhaft.

I dont know if it is a law covering dog poo but i think it comes under something else like littering.
As a dog owner our dogs poo is picked up unless it is somewhere like in a farmers field. As to a childrens playground we would never take our dog there as even if he does not want a poo he will mark it as his territory. also not very nice.

Do you wipe your dog's bum before you let him back in the house?
Do dogs get klingons?
Ami in Berlin
This is the number one thing that gets on my nerves in the country.

Honestly, I think it just never occurs to people.

What is needed is a public service campaign (Scheiss nicht an Deutschland - I can see the posters now). Present it to people as a public health issue (it's a nation of hypochondriacs, after all) instead of a public nuisance (which at least in Berlin people couldn't care less about).

What gets me is when I see a person with a dog not on a line (also forbidden) that craps right in front of a police officer and NOTHING happens. Not just no ticket, but not a word said.

If people were informed, and if for one week there was an intensive ticketing campaign, the problem would clean up real fast, I'd bet.
Nick
The chances of klingons are greatly increased by the length of your dogs hair. If your dog has a really furry butt then its recommended to give it a shave around it's chocolate starfish

We have come to the point where we are considering getting an ultrasonic cat and dog frightener. Our house is surrounded on three sides with pavements, which are full! It's nice being surrounded by parks etc, but we have the feeling that all dog owners in our area walk past our house - 90 percent without a lead on a dangerous road. Some idiots even walk down the middle of the road with more than one dog - I've lost count of the near misses! Nobody clears up the mess and the authorities never clean the side road either.

I may appear to be dog hater... in actual fact, its the dog owners I have problems with! Especially those with aggressive untrained dogs.

Maybe we will buy the ultrasonic thing! ph34r.gif

Oooh, now I feel better doctor. I've let it all out... maybe we all should, the dogs do!

Sorry, sick joke...

I loved the London Borough of ??? TV campaign, where a man does just that! Did anyone see it?

I agree with that. Our dog know where and where not to go, you can train them. If we are somewhere new and we say 'nein' he knows not to go there and does not. It is not hard to do.

This is the dog's bollocks

Love it! Only one problem though... it has a strobe light on it - I guess it switches off. I can't pretend it wasn't me that caused the neighbours dog to go running off up the road! ph34r.gif

Don't do it! I used to have a cat problem in my garden back in the uk - they just loved crapping in my flowerbeds & it stank, so one by one I tried all the options. First was the cat pellets, where the smell was meant to be too mild for humans, but would keep cats out of the garden. It worked fine until it rained, then all the smell was released at once & you couldn't breath outside, & the people next door complained their kid was feeling sick.

Next I tried the sonic IR trap - where if anything triggered the IR sensor, a 'Silent to humans' alarm would go off. Silent my arse - it was a high pitched scream which could be heard from anywhere in the house & gave you a headache in seconds. Didn't seem to bother the cats much, who kept up their nightly visits, but I could hear dogs barking for miles when it went off- so I got rid of that before anyone blamed me for their dog going mad & eating their kids.

Scaring the cats away with a BB machine gun didn't help much either - they just learned quickly not to come into the garden when people were around or they would be met with a hail of small plastic yellow balls (before anyone complains of the cruelty, I know it was the shock & not pain that drove them away, as one fat old tabby used to completely ignore it - you could just see him thinking 'What's this pratt up to now?' as the balls bounced off him). Gave up on that idea too when I got sick of collecting thousands of little yellow balls from everywhere.

Finally I heard a great idea from a mate - but sadly never got to put it to the test as I moved. I have read up on it since & it is meant to work, but its not easy. First you need to go to your local zoo, and buy some lion crap. Yes, I'm serious, and some zoo's do sell it just for this reason. You then fertilise your flower beds with it, & you will never see a cat near your garden again. It doesn't smell as bad as cat crap and after a day or 2 the smell is to faint, but should be effective for about 6 months.

If you try it, let me know if it works!

We're still at the training stage, so she can't always hold it until we get somewhere totally suitable - which means that yes, there's been a few accidents at the side of the pavement. However, as I said earlier, I ALWAYS clear it away immediately.

What really gets me is that there are some lovely areas around here but you can't walk through the fields for fear of treading in dogshit the whole time. Not only would I not want to walk in it, I certainly wouldn't want my dog to walk in it - after all, I take my shoes off when I get in to the house!

I'd be all for on-the-spot fines for dog owners who don't clear up dog poop. They give all dogs and dog owners a bad name mad.gif
HamburgChris
We were going try Wolf's fat - a German tip I got - but we can't find any... only Russia, as far as I know. Maybe we should get a lion. laugh.gif

I find the responses from bad owners really annoying, when they are approached.

When asked to put the dog on a lead:

My dog is well trained... My dog would never do anything wrong... My dog is used to traffic... My dog is friendly... I know my dog, you don't... the list is endless!
OK, what happens if a motorbike backfires or children start annoying the dog and the dog runs out in front a car and then the car swerves, mounts the pavement and hits people? This happened in front of me once! A child was pinned under the car and was not badly injured.

Have you got a dog?
Was the response from one person whose dog regularly runs by our house barking aggressively at children in prams, bike riders and people in general - down the middle of the road without a lead. The thing runs straight at children and barks in their face!

Drivers or bike riders who are not so sure, such as pensioners, could panic when a dog is not on a lead. Drivers only have a few seconds to decide what a dog could do. Bad dog owners do not think in advance and do not think what might happen if a driver judges a situation badly.

We have witnessed an amazing amount of dog related problems while sitting in our garden.

That's all from me on this subject.

I learned the hard way to alwys carry a pack of kleenx with me, I don't know how many times I got stuck trying to find a toliet to get paper to clean up. So I always keep a few in my coat. It could be also the snow has melted and all the shit that was buried by owners in snow has come back to haunt them. Must admit I've been guilty of doing that the odd time.

I'm lucky that in our area most owners either pick up or let there dogs go back in the bushes where no one see its. Although I noticed a big hunk of shit on the side walk the other day, gross!!! Even worse someone had stepped in, hopefully it was with their left foot, good lukc according to the french.

I've heard this a lot, too. To which my response is: 'no, and neither should you if you don't like picking up after one.'
