Sky TV, Telephone and Internet - the basics?

Hi all

I will be moving out to Frankfurt shortly and will obviously want to get Sky, a telephone and an internet connection (2mb+ ADSL) as soon as I get an apartment.

I have a digibox and current subscription here, I presume I can't just take this out and carry on with it?

As for the internet, I have my own ADSL router etc, so would just need a phone/active adsl line.

Any assistance greatly appreciated

Thanks
jg.

Deutsche Telekom can be a bit dozy in arranging DSL - it typically takes about 6 weeks.
You can order online or go into a Telekom shop in person.

There are probably some other companies in Frankfurt, like Arcor, depending on where you rent.

You presume wrong! That's actually the best solution - you bring the Digibox and card with you and continue the subscription. You need a UK address to continue the subscription (for when they send out a new card). This is the cheapest way to get Sky.

You can get a dish and LNB here installed for the Astra2 satellite constellation and cabled up to your Digibox.
Make sure your apartment has a balcony with a view to the sky just East of South. Also make absolutely sure that you can have your own satellite dish before you sign any rental agreements. Whilst you have a right to a dish under EU law, it's easier to establish all this stuff first.

One thing to check - DSL in Germany uses a particular variant of the DSL standards known as ITU Annex B. It is possible your DSL router may support this with a firmware upgrade, if not you'd be better off selling it in the UK and getting a new one here. Internet providers often throw in a DSL router when you sign up, the type often depending on which package you take.

Can you read German? If so, have a look at www.teltarif.de for a guide to phone lines, DSL, etc.

If you can get a copy of Stars and Stripes there are several Internet companies that provide English service. I don't have a copy off hand or I'd provide the info.
