Can anyone help me with this. I have applied for a job through a job agency for a call centre who need native English speaking people. The job agency have asked how much wages I would expect, but I have no idea what to say. So does anyone out there do this job or know of someone who does and how much they get.

Bombi's job Bombi may be able to shed some light on that.

I guess that may all depend on what your function is, if you're managing it I guess you would earn
a bit more than the people taking the calls.

I am taking a wild stab in the dark based on when I used to do agency work as a student and I would reckon about 10-12€ an hour. I might be totally wrong though!

Have never worked in a call center (thank goodness), altho I once tele-saled at a few companies in Central London, including a big US-owned one. The working environment and treatment meted out there seemed to be modelled on your average WW2 concentration camp. I cringe to think about it even now, all these years later. People being fired on the spot and marched out of the building by the security guard, staff receiving Mars Bars as incentives (which were put inside balloons which you were priveliged to pop each time you made a sale), jackbooted "line managers" in "hives" around the openplan office space who would try and ring your extension. If you answered it meant you were obviously not doing a customer call and so got an on-the-spot boll*cking. And so on...
And from what Ive gathered, these call-centers are even worse. The modern day equivalent of the 19th century tailors sweatshop. Instead of being huddled over sewing machines theyre huddled over headsets and PCs. Or maybe a Dickensian workhouse would be nearer the truth. They probably have big signs up on the walls saying things like "God Is Love" and "Cleanliness Is Next To Godliness", and "Get Back On The Godddamn Phone"!
Well, is there that much difference? I dont think there is!

Hi,
I have not worked in a call centre but spent time at a Geman client where I was situated just next to the company's call centre ( open-concept office environment ).
One thing I noticed about those people is they certainly were an unhappy bunch ( even when compared to the German average )!
Don't know what they were getting paid ( probably about 10 / hour ) but the thing I really noticed was the turnover in that department was quite high. In a group of about 30 people, there was a core group of older married ladies ( maybe 10 of them - most living in the nearby suburban residential district and walked to work - certainly incentive to stay ) that had been there for years.
Outside of the older ladies, I would guess the entire balance of the staff ( always somewahat younger - seemed to be fresh from school ) was turning over about once every two to three months.

Ex-Colleague of mine had trouble finding a new job and applied for a job at a call center as a line operator. She was offered € 8 the hour.

the other thing would be to phone up the local IHK. They will tell you the going rate
Talking about going rates...people keep on telling me that I charge too little for what I do. Can somebody tell me what an average rate is to work for an hour...degrees and everything, but I don't want to price myself out of the market!!!

think you need to elaborate on the job descripion!
I have a solicitor working for me some saturdays on the building. And I don`t pay him 50 euros the hour!

The call center I work in is a very happy place to work in, of course you are expected to work and not sit twiddling your thumbs but they are very motivated to work. I think you should say €10 per hour and you're not far off the mark.

@ Niel, is that the price you pay for a Prostitute these days ???
Hi Neil I think I should change my job-I do financial analysis and I do not have a clue of what the going rate is because people are usually employed on a fulltime basis. I write a report in English, which also requires technical analysis (not just the English, but also a bit of analytical skills) and I start at 6 am. Any ideas...?

I read somewhere about Jobs in the ex-DDR that the starting rate for normal staff is around 1.400 € per month, which I presume was for 40 hours per week. I guess you should get a premium for Mainz & for being English speaking.
