Will german insurance companies cover a british registered car?

My insurance for my UK car is up for renewal soon so am looking for the easiest option.

ta in advance
Neil
Definately Not ! as far as I'm aware.
JRD
I suspected that may be the case

Answer: NO

are you registared here in germany?, if so, you have just 6 months (of you being registered) to register your car with the germans. after which you can be fined a hefty amount

I understood that the car only needed to be officially registered in germany if it was in the country for more than six months at any one time. ie. if I took it abroad for a weekend and could prove it, it would not be a problem. Is this not the case?

I wouldn't worry about the six month rule as I am not really sure how they can prove you had your vehicle with you at áll times! I kept mine for longer than that when I first came over here!

I looked into the insurance with keeping the UK plates with no joy (this was almost 6 years ago now mind).

If you are thinking of keeping the car for a while then it is probably worth registering it here. I did most of the paperwork for this for an ex boyfriend of mine a few years back and it was not that difficult as far as I remember. He only needed to change the lights which he did himself!

To be honest I do intend to take it back to the UK and sell it, its just the hassle of driving it all the way at this time of year. Its been here almost 4 months now so I suppose legally its got a couple more months.

Its no real problem having a RHD car here, i don't mind it. But to get it through the german MOT type test would cost a few quid due to the 4 completely different tyre manufacturers, and slightly blowey exhaust.

After that sales pitch someone here should buy it off me and save me the hassle...

As you can see its a real stunner biggrin.gif

Answer: YES! but it'll cost you, and you have to know where to look.

I insured my British-registered car with Axa via Goddard Insurance Agency (Tel 030 8335088, they speak good english) in Berlin for the first year I was out here - but now have a German car and have switched to somewhere where I pay half the amount. Apparently the ADAC will also do insurance for a car on British plates, but is also pricey.

With regard to the 6 month rule, I remember reading somewhere that if the car was out the country for 3 weeks then the time started again, so would probably need more than a weekend away. You also need to check that your British insurance will still cover you - mine would only cover for 90 days continuous time out the country (although again, how they check that is anyone's guess). Fine so long as nothing goes wrong, but if it does you could find yourself uninsured.

Well I stand corrected ...I really wouldn't have thought it possible here, I thought there would have been issuses about road worthiness etc as your MOT is every year, where as TÜV is every 2 years and the Germans have no way of knowing if the MOT is still valid unlike TÜV where they just need to look at the plates:unsure: ... but there you go, anything's possible I guess just a matter of price sleep.gif

I kept my UK registered car in Germany for 4 years. It was insured through the AA Overseas Dept. with Axa, which gives you unlimited green card cover. After 4 years of reaching across the seat to get my ticket from car park machines, I changed to a German car... then 4 months later moved back to the UK with German car and now have the car park problem again <sigh> anybody want to swap a LHD for a RHD?
Rebecca
I don't know how much insurance costs in Uk now, but a while back TBOTR was posting at length about how much cheaper insurance is in Germany.

We have Y reg Alfa Romeo Red, We have had it six months, don't know the milege, 1.8, don't think he will swap it for a 1.0 but i will ask.

It was worth asking though thankyou, you never know we could have saved ourselves some money...lol

I would still check the legal side of things here. I think the car has to be registered here if you have been here for over 6 months. ie you registered as living here 6 months ago. I would check what the German laws say, you are living in Germany!

The problems could start if you have an accident...
