The World Cup opening gala in Berlin has been cancelled just five months before the tournament because staging the event could damage the playing surface needed at the Olympic Stadium, FIFA said on Friday.

Thats the official version according to FIFA, I like the way they say just 5 months huh.gif .
The report goes on to say that a German newspaper will report tomorrow that the opening gala, has been cancelled after what they reckon was 4 years of planning due to rising costs and "sluggish" ticket sales, taking into account that all the other countries have hosted the World Cup without any such problems. Whats up with the grass in Berlin, is it a particular wimpish strain of grass huh.gif ... and the first game on the pitch in question is a full 6 days later. I think FIFA are telling porky pies wink.gif

It was reported last week that the trophy room at the Scottish FA was burgled and cleaned out. Authorities believe that the contents will be fenced in pubs locally...

...apparently the police have said that if anyone offers pub patrons a roll of blue carpet, that they should be informed immediatley !!!

Och Aye the Tatan Army.

due to rising costs and "sluggish" ticket sales,

I'm not surprised there have been sluggish ticket sales, with tickets costing up to € 750 each! blink.gif
Ami in Berlin
Tickets ran from €100 to €750. And for what?

If I like football I want tickets to a football game, not to see Peter Gabrial smash coconuts together. If I'm not a football fan but I would like to see Peter Gabrial smash coconuts together, I'll do that in a venue that does not include a lot of football.

Never should have scheduled it in the first place.

Anyone who believes this was cancelled because of the grass has a bit of a grass problems himself.
