I know there are way more Brits than Americans on here, but I thought you might find this interesting anyway.

A Subjective Comparison of Germany and the United States

QUOTE
There are many stereotypes in Germany about life in the United States. Here I will try to compare these stereotypes to the reality in the US as I perceive it. In this comparison, I will also portrait the situation in Germany so that Americans might learn something about my country and Germans have something to criticize.

...

Since I started this page several years ago, I repeatedly noticed that the differences between America and Germany are getting smaller, a result of Germany moving in America's direction.

Found via hebig.com: USA and Germany compared

Interesting, and I'm sure that'll read the whole thing through, but I've so far gotten as far as the first paragraph and have found the first blatent factual innaccuracy:

'Most importantly, the US uses the majority system throughout, meaning that voters get to decide between several candidates, and a candidate needs more than 50% of the votes in order to win. '

Nope. Not true

Technology:
"Almost everyone in the US has a computer at home; many Germans don't see the need"
"Air conditioning is almost unheard of in Germany"
"Machines generally accept coins and bills and give exact change; many German machines only take coins and don't give change"

Tv & Media:
"Then there are also private TV stations in Germany, mostly on cable"

Selective inforcement of laws:
"In Germany, if a policeman is around, pedestrians won't cross a red traffic light"
Annoying Customs and Miscellanea:
"In Germany, when you have eaten in a restaurant, taking the leftovers with you is typically frowned upon; they are thrown away"

Sorry Bill,

but that has to be one of the most unfactual pieces of crap I have ever come across! The guy appears to be living in a dreamed up version of his home country because every German I know has a PC, Air Conditioning exists in many cars, workplaces and shops, a lot of post 1990 Machines do take notes and give change, private TV is available on satellite & DVB-T as well as cable, Jaywalking...you dont need a policeman to stop them, they won't cross on red. full stop. Doggy bag? Germany? Frowned upon? Bullenscheiße! tongue.gif

Also, its silly trying to compare the a huge place like the USA to a small single country like Germany... imagine trying to compare -for example- the state of Texas with the whole of the EU? wink.gif

I bet he left Germany in the early eighties...

Does anyone know what this guy is supposed to be a 'college teacher' (I always thought the term was 'Professor') of? If it's Political Science he must teach at Shithead State Junior College given the depth up inaccuracy in that section. I'm not complaining about the subjective stuff, just the parts that are factually wrong.

Ami,

it reminds me of those school projects I used to do when I was 9 years old.

Agreed, mind you, he does say that he returned to the US of A in 1992.

Actually, thats probably the only fact managed to get right... wink.gif

Looking at the rest of his website, you can see that the guy has a plonker attitude.
My Ph D in how to waste web space
the more I read, the more I can clearly see he has not got the foggiest notion of
what he writes about...

What suprises me is his website address http://math-www.uni-paderborn.de/~axel/us-d.html.

University Paderborn huh.gif Whats that all about?

It all makes sense when you click on his 'research' link.
