Kilians Irish Pub

often mis-spelt as: Killians

Went to Kilians on Saturday night with some friends. Not a normal locale for me, but I do occasionally. Thought I spotted Malcolm Spudbury, but wasn't quite sure, and by the time I got around to asking if it was him, he had disappeared.

Far more disconcerting than spotting a Toytowner in an Irish pub was spotting 6 skinheads drinking there. We arrived around 7pm, I noticed them around 8 or so, and then they left at 10pm. Obviously they had a beating to get to. But seriously, skinheads in an Irish pub in Munich. Suspenders, shaved heads, Doc Martens, the lot. I asked the opinion of those I was with and they figured they were harmless, not real skinheads. I accepted that for a while, as they were reasonably well behaved and didn't try and start anything, but when I saw "Skinhead Reggae" on one of their t-shirts and the dogdy looking tattos, I figured that, hey, these were true skinheads, not just people who liked the look.

Anyone ever notice characters like that before in Kilians? To be honest, although I don't feel threatened by them, it doesn't really encourage me to keep drinking there.
Malcolm Spudbury
It wasn't me. You must have seen my doppelgänger - I heard he was there from 8:00 to 11:30 last night.

I go to Kilian's quite often (about 4 times/month), and I've never seen any group matching that description there before.

The crowd is mostly English speakers and Germans in their 30's and up, often in largish groups, friendly. My only complaint with Kilian's is that the food costs way too much (although it's often pretty good) and sometimes the live acts turn their speakers up too loud. They have live music every evening, but I don't think most people go there for the specific entertainers most of the time.

You should definitely try going again!

I always preferred Ned Kellys to Kilians, although I think I'm starting to get a bit tired of the Irish and Australian bars now.

I was there with Opa on Saturday evening, didn't see any of the chappies you mentioned, maybe they had tammies on as it was cold.
The food was good as was the music and the atmosphere. A lovely wee blond Scottish lassie served us and made us feel very welcome. We even managed a conversation as the live music wasn't deafening, definitely worth another visit.
Tried to spot Toytowners and thought that a table with a man sporting a black 'tashe and beard sitting next to an Irishman and two others, could be a possibility. Does anyone fit that description?
Opa said that a few scary looking Nuermberg football fans lurking around the bar had number one blades.

Some wise-tall-barman there tried to swindle me out of €40 in change the other night.

Weird, everytime I go there, I have a great time. The staff are friendly and I get a nice warm welcome.

IW, could this be because you spend shedloads in there?
Note: I've always had good service in there too (apart from Madame Miseryface).

I was always treated well in Ned Kelly's, but back then I knew all the staff, and was a fixture 4 or 5 nights a week.

Is the world really that cynical?

I quite like the pub as well and surely can't complain about the service but maybe it's just the special treatment i get there (u call it a local wink.gif)

I saw those kind of guys in the praeger fruehling (sp?) club just off Leopoldstrasse once too. Thought they were a joke dressed up in docs and ben sherman shirts. Spent the whole night there and there was no trouble at all.

The 'original' british skinheads were white guys into reggae in the uk i thought and only later did it get the neasty racist overtones.

But it is certainly a statement dressing up like that in Munich.
More tea, Vicar?

Ich finde Kilians auch ganz schrecklich. But its either there or the Outland for decent rugger/cricket coverage.

Is it just me, or have others seen more punk and/or skinhead young people around Munich lately? They all look to me like they're visiting from Berlin ...
