The OVG NRW in Münster today annulled the operating license for the Airport formerly known as RAF Laarbruck (AFKARL). It seems the respective authorities had not been particular enough in their investigations before granting the license. Because of they the judges granted the suit entered by the
"Aktionsgemeinschaft gegen Fluglärm e.V" (AGFEV) on behalf the residents of the surrounding communities.
Although AFKARL intends to continue operation until the judgement is confirmed in law, the residents represented by AGFEV are hoping to have operations stopped immediately.

I read that on Teletext yesterday evening too.
what a bunch of tw*ts... firstly it provides a lot of badly needed jobs in an area with high unemployment, secondly there are only 5 or 6 flights a day (and no night flights) and being a regular user of Weeze I know it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere, far from any sizeable conurbation and having having lived directly on the flight path to a major uk airport for over 20 years I don't (personally) think it's a big deal...
I can't remember there being many complaints when it was still a fully operational RAF airbase
with much more traffic than the couple of flights they have a day now

That's exactly what hubbi and I said when we read that yesterday.

@bbulldog
yepp the whole housing estate is still there but 99% empty and rapidly falling
into a state where it will have to be bulldozed, it's quite sad to see literally hundreds
of houses standing empty.

I hope so, otherwise one "cheap" way to Britain is closed. :excl:

Some of the houses appear occupied though. Must be going through a (very) slow process of bringing them up to "German" standards then flogging them off - you know - shelf toilets etc

I'm not talking about on the camp, but the village of Weeze itself. There was a housing estate with like a mound around it outside of camp..

Knowing the speed at which German courts come to a decision, I think we can safely say that this will take at least until 2010 to ever reach a decision ... and then in favour of leaving well alone.

I live in Weeze and all the people I know around here are in favour of the airport. As Neil said, there were not many complaints when it was still a fully operational RAF airbase.
Half of the quarters in Weeze have been bulldozed and the newer type are being sold off. The mound is still there Bully!
The quarters at the airport are mainly empty, some are being occupied by Polish families.

Hi Loopy
There is only one block of flats left, it is on the rhs corner of Weller Str. and Magdeburger Str.
It is due to be demolished soon with explosives. Don´t know how true that is as my son heard it from the workmen, and they might be having him on.
The Little City / Community Centre is now a primary school and the tower block has gone.
Sorry for the bad news!

@Dark-Supernova: welcome to the board.
RAF Laarbruch was the only camp i had trouble getting into. In my passport it didnt have my occupation entered.(in the 80's) The guy at the gate didn't want to let me in, he told me to go to the consulate and get it entered. I asked for a pen.
You will get a shock when you see it now.
