Tommy
Thanks but divorce wont put Turkey in my belly

The nearest you'll get to a large supermarket is Real in Eschborn, but you won't like it. It's just not a pleasant experience. And I'm sure Real was involved in that meat scandal.

Welcome to Germany! biggrin.gif

It is so weird here, they build massive Furniture Stores that don't accept Credit Cards or sell Electornics but grocery stores are something from East Germany!

It has improved a bit.

Walmart Dreieich right off the 661.

@ the Tim Hortons!

Do you work for WalMart??!!??
Commission for every post, maybe? wink.gif

WalMart in Dreieich is, excusez mon français svp, shite.

WalMart should be ashamed of themselves and ashamed of their Dreieich branch, cos instead of trying to show Germany what a Hypermarket should look like, they simply did nothing. Sorry, they replaced the signs with the name of the previous German owners, but that was it. Dreieich is the most uninviting Hypermarket I have ever seen. Even a Real- Markt has a warmer feeling to it than WalMart.

The Only WalMart that has ever impressed me in the slightest is the Wiesbaden one. but the Wiesbaden one is too far away.
the near ones, Dreieich, Langen & Maintal are not worth the effort. sorry.

@ Tommy, have you tried the MiniMal across from the Polizeipräsidium near the crossroads of Miquel- Adikesallee? Its on the U1,2,3 line between Miquel- Adikesallee & Dornbusch stations. Its a big MiniMal, and its relatively new. I am not sure about getting Turkey there though, except sliced stuff in the shelves maybe...

Maybe your local Metzger can be of assistance?
Tommy
Thanks for this--going in now wish me luck

:$

(Walmart reminds us of home - Canada) Sorry! blink.gif

We also are rarely in Frankfurt, so have nooooo idea about the stores... :$
Maisflocke
Frankfurt does not really have much to offer really. sad.gif

Walmart Real- & Toom all get my thumbs down.
MiniMal is acceptable, but only the newer stores.
Edeka has not really penetrated the Frankfurt area,
and the others... well I havent really found them so I cant
give my opinion.

wink.gif
luke
Tommy - just occurred to me. Go to Edeka in Oberursel at the north end of Oberursel by the international school.
Tommy
Luke,

Is Edeka a cash & carry?

You wouldnt know the strasse and then my satnav can get me there.

Cheers

Tommy

No that Edeka is not a cash and carry one. It is really nice though and has a good selection:

Camp-King-Allee 2
61440 Oberursel

If you want to stay in Frankfurt though I would recommend the Mini Mal that maisflocke also recommended.

does anything has changed? it has been 3 years. i'm looking for big supermarkets in or near frankfurt
vancordtland
No, not really... the big supermarkets are outside Frankfurt. But the Mini Mal on Eschersheimer Landstraße (across the new police headquarter) is the best option I think. Lot of English speaking people there! The new one in Bornheim (Heidestraße) isn't too bad either. And for a change I like Tengelmann - they have some other stuff than Mini Mal, but they are smaller and a bit more expensive.

I was also surprised that Frankfurt doens't have the big ones - but when I stayed in New York I faced the same problem - the big ones are outside the city (besides the new Whole Food Market - that's a fantastic store!!! Expensive, but nice food)
juice99
and are there any big ones near frankfurt for somebody living in FFM/Goldstein? i don't mean in frankfurt, but for example south-west of it.

you mentioned the ones in frankfurt, what about the ones outside? (moderatly priced)

from this thread i got these near frankfurt:

Walmart
Supercenter Dreieich / Sprendlingen
Robert-Bosch-Str. 15
63303 Dreieich

Walmart
Supercenter Mainz-Weisenau
Weberstraße 15
55130 Mainz

Edeka
Camp-King-Allee 2
61440 Oberursel

so these are the only 3 big supermarkets near frankfurt?

maybe it would be easier if you could just give me the name of supermarkets that are big ones. REWE or Aldi are not them for sure.
So i suppose Walmart and Edeka are the ones that are always big? any others?

World's Biggest Retailer Wal-Mart Closes Up Shop in Germany

QUOTE
"Wal-Mart's attempt to apply the company's proven US success formula in an unmodified manner to the German market turned out to be nothing short of a fiasco."

There is a REAL in Eschborn and a HIT in Sachenhausen. Both fit the criteria of being "BIG" and are often also crowded. My personal favorite is a REWE that's "just right" in size. It is in the Eschborn/Sossenheim area. It's got a getranke markt and a good selection of fresh fish, meat, cheeses and vegetables. I've never found it to be crowded. It has a big parking area. It's open until 10pm. Here is th address.

REWE-Markt‎
Westerbachstr. 160, 65936 Frankfurt, Germany

and don't forget the new Edeka/Scheck-In Center as mentioned in Scheck-In Center - biggest foodstore in Frankfurt - it's almost as big as a real supermarket...
Tigrita
I don’t know any supermarkets in Frankfurt, but do know 2 very large "Toom" supermarkets, north of it. They are in Friedrichsdorf and Bad Nauheim, if you are willing to travel that far. smile.gif
juice99
all supermarkets you mentioned are either north or east from frankfurt. are there any close for somebody living in Goldstein?
Faskally
There's a big, newly-renovated Toom supermarket in Frankfurt-Griesheim. Not too far from Goldstein, just a quick hop across the river.
