Hi, we have 2 children in german state school and the standards are not very high, I have complained and critisized it before - now their school is putting on some sort of xmas bazaar/festival thing to raise money for music lessons or a teacher if I understood properly. Now the parents are meant to come up with ideas and put them into practise for each class. Any ideas of what I could do?
Suggestions were to sell drink, food or do songs and tell storys (all christmassy themes of cours) but I can't do that in german and they wouldn't go for english. If anyone has a good idea it would be great, after complaining about german schools and telling everyone how much better education seems to be in UK I had better make an effort and join in!

Cook something - requires no German except when you are asked what sort of pastry goes in the mince pies and sausage rolls - just shrug.

Make Xmas crackers, put a small gift or sweet inside and sell them. We did it one year at my kids school and it was a big success. I did make the mistake of taking apart a real cracker to use as a template, cutting it out with a craft knife etc Let's just say it took me 5 days to make 30 real looking ones. Better to make them from loo roll holders and just wrap them in pretty Xmas paper.

Thanks, I think I should suggest the cooking thing or rather baking, the mince pie idea is good as they don't have that here. Have to search for the british store, sure there is one in Berlin and get some jars to fil them (can't get suet here to make own), face painting always goes down well at these sort of things but I've never tried it and would have to buy all the stuff I think if I understood properly the parent who suggests something has to supply all the things to put it into action!

If you need it I have a recipe for suetless mincemeat, it doesn't need to sit for weeks and mature like the traditional stuff does. Fairy cakes always go down well too, you don't often see those at German occasions.

That recipie would be great, probably cheaper than buying jars too. I haven't done real xmas baking for years , have to have a look on the internet if there are some good ideas.

I'll add it to the recipe section under Themes in a few.

I am not sure if you want to do something typically British but we have an Advent Bazaar every year with our scout group and we sell waffles and Glühwein.
The waffles go down really well we just make up the mixtures and cook them while people wait! The kids could help to prepare the mixtures in class if you have the facilities!
I guess it depends if the real purpose is for the kids to do it or to make money! Our one is always more orientated towards making money for the group which I do find a bit sad as the kids are not overly involved - well not the younger ones anyway!!
