Fast Internet in Germany?

Currently I am using T-Online as my internet provider via router. I did a test today it says my internet connection is 750kb per second which is pretty slow. My friend in England says he has just been updated from a 2mb to a 10mb connection so has Germany got any providers as fast as this? And what about T-Online surely they must have a faster connection?
bbulldog
T-online do have faster connections but are the most expensive.

try www.1und1.de or any of the many other providers.

Alice at the moment is having DNS problems, well yesterday at 16:00 as did google
Steven23
Whats the fastest T-Online connection available anything near 10mb per second I dont think they show the speeds? :-s
bbulldog
from the t-online homepage for the DSL 6000
QUOTE
Bis zu 6016 kbit/s Downloadgeschwindigkeit)
Upstream bis zu 576 kbit/s)
Downloads mit bis zu 94-facher ISDN-Geschwindigkeit)
Videos in Echtzeit und in fantastischer Ton- und Bildqualität ansehen
Größere Leistungsreserven auch bei Anbindung von Netzwerken

that is so far as i know the fastest over here, just have to work out the prices various people charge. with 1und1 you can have the 6000 for the same price that t-online charges for the 1000!
Steven23
6016 kbit/s equals what in MB?and what does upstream mean?

Thanks for the help btw
bbulldog
6016 is a 6mb

upstream is when you upload things onto the internet. ie from your computer to your homepage etc.
Download is clear?
Steven23
Yep. Thanks!
bbulldog
no probs, i still have the 1000 at t-online but will change it in the very near future...
charlie
hi steven,

i'm just wondering what you need such a connection for?
i've got the t-online 2000 and a network of 5 pc's on it
to download a file while others are surfing the internet
i still have a fast download (faster than most servers will provide anyhow)
meaning i can download one file @ about 180KB which is often the maximum
any servers will let you while the other 4 pc's share the rest of the available
approx. 250KB - avarage download of 10MB is under one minute
is that too slow for you?
jester
Have to agree with Charlie.
I have a 2MB connection with Alice and have 4 computers networked to it. Very fast and reliable with no probs. One of them is a media center PC and I have the 6pm (GMT) BBC news running smoothly even when some of the other machines are downloading or surfing. Don't see the need for more speed!
But if you must Alice are offering "up to" (that's their words) 16MB until the end of 2006 for the same price as their 6MB package, think it's around €50 a month.
luke
Bear in mind that 125KB (kilobytes) per second is the same as 1000 kilobits per second.

T-online 6016 kbits per sec costs 24.99 + 9.99 for flat-rate. so 35 all in.
Steven23
I am currently using DSL 1000 so even the DSL 2000 would be faster. The 16MB sounds good but to expensive for me at the the moment.
DeadCat
jester,

I thought the Hansenet 16000kbps offer was only the same price as the 6000kbps connection until the end of 2005 (then an extra Euro10 per month), maybe I read something wrong. Also note that the upload is the same on both services at 768kbps so it won’t help things like bittorrent.

Anyway, we’ve found 6000kbps to be sufficient, we can download the latest ‘top gear’, ‘fifth gear’, ‘lost’ etc…. in about 2 hours, one day after the shows air in the UK or the US.

For large downloads, a DVD at 4.5GB takes about 2 hours from a paid service at www.giganews.com, they even have a handy performance test on the web site under ‘performance status’ – ‘test your connection speed’. With the Hansenet 6000kbps we get about 5700kbps, can’t ask for more than that.
bbulldog
Well i have just looked into this

T-online:
DSL 6000 24,99
DSL flat 9,95
Modem/Router 0,--
total costs 34,94 monthly

1und1:
DSL 6000 24,99
DSL flat 9,95
Modem/Router 29,95
total costs 34,94 monthly plus one off 29,95

Alice/Hansenet:
Alice super 6000 34,90
DSL flat 6,90
Modem/Router ??
toatal costs monthly 41,80 plus one off 159,-- to set up.

anyone correct meif i am wrong...
far-lands
you forgot that 1&1 is offering 1 year free phoneflat. 12 months free calls to german landlines...

Congratulations! Let's hope my transition to 2000 DSL will be as smoth next week! smile.gif
bbulldog
@Hannah nothing wrong with that if you have one computer going online. We have 3 computers and a laptop at home so DSL 6000 is better for us and as i said we still had the old tarifs, with the new ones we are saving and getting more power biggrin.gif

& yes that is without phone

Dont forget a change from 1000 to 2000 you can get a new modem/router free too. and it only costs 3 euros extra a month..

far-lands
Well Bombi, welcome to the World of DSL, and I see that BBulldog has done another little bit of Magic again ...
far-lands
Have you gotten used to the speed yet ??
I would be devistated if I had to go back to a modem again !!

Did you at least offer Bully a cuppa ?? tongue.gif
maaph
so you can post your nonsense in double quick time now then tongue.gif
Bombi
@maaph, haha! tongue.gif

@far-lands, of course I gave him a cuppa! ohmy.gif

What's really great is I now can listen to BBC Radio 2! Please don't call me sad! laugh.gif
far-lands
your not sad Bombi. biggrin.gif
Your mental !! ph34r.gif
Bombi
Thanks! sad.gif
far-lands
But Bombi, haven't you got a $KY dish set up ??
You can listen to the radio with that too.

But, thats a good Idea, I was in need of some kind of radio station to put me to sleep over XMAS, maybe I'll try BBC2 !!
Bombi
We're not allowed to put a dish on the building and we like our landlord and lady and don't want to upset them.
far-lands
Hmm, I suppose that is a fair argument.

Only kidding anyway, hope you were not offended ...
zwackel
Morning Bombi!

As far as I know foreigners are definitely allowed to put a dish on, unless it`s not just about avoiding any trouble with your landlord you should give it a try!
Hannah
should be definIIIIIItely be allowed on the balcony at least (if you have one) biggrin.gif
Bombi
Don't have a balcony.

No. This is only allowed if you cannot get your native language out of the wall socket.

If you have cable, you get BBC World, CNN and NBC. Therefore you can't insist on your own dish. If you don't have cable, then you can, unless you can get BFBS over the antenne.

It also doesn't matter if you have a balcony or not. If you are entitled to mount a dish (and I have nothing against mounting a dish wink.gif -- just to get that in before those dirty minds get working), you can mount it in a suitable location, which your landlord has to agree to.

Another of those German rules!

Quote from a Telekom technician:

We'll sell anybody DSL 6000, but most can't use that bandwidth, they just pay for it. Even many companies don't generally use that much with 20 or more people online at once!

A DSL connection will only supply what you need (means what is being pushed at you, after you call some data up) at the time (it is an adaptive technology). Further, if you are more than about 1 km from the exchange, you will NEVER see 6Mb/s, the damping in the line won't allow it, so you're paying for something you can't have. It is a "feature" of DSL that your possible bit-rate goes down with approximately the quadrat of the distance you are from the exchange. The system monitors this and adjusts transfer rate accordingly.

On my scanner here (monitors what is going over the DSL, I very rarely have much more than 512kb/s in download on a 2Mb/s connection, few servers will supply more.

@Bully: That 512kb/s is with 2 desktops and 2 laptops online when my lads are here. The only time I have seen 2Mb/s is downloading pictures from here, and then only the full sized ones.

I live 0,7km from the exchange and TKom have confirmed that 6Mb/s in both directions is possible if I wanted it. To my comment that I hardly ever fully used my 2Mb/s, he laughed that it was good for T.Kom that most don't realise this.

So what you doing with 6Mb/s? Streaming 6 video streams to separate TVs? Unmentionable file transfers?

Where do you keep all that data? x-Terabyte NAS at home?

Seriously, I think you are right. I did hear about that some time ago, so unless she hasn't got cable TV she can't insist on putting a dish on.
Bombi
As I have cabel, it's a no go! sad.gif
far-lands
Bombi, You can always ask.
If you ask nicely, he might allow it. If you tell him that if and when you move out, you will take the dish down and fill the holes up, so that you can't see them any more, it might help him make a decision in your favor. Apart from the direction of view, you can even give him the choice of position. If you get a SATMAN in to do the job, everything will be done properly, and no leaks are to be feared.
I have been able to have a dish with all of my rented flats. And no probs now anyway ( My own house )
zwackel
Right, why not asking, your landlord won't kick you out just for trying.
Besides, the english channels you can get on cable are just ordindary news crap and not quite entertaining...
Bombi
Thanks for your helpful comments but we've decided not to, a dish on a listed building doesn't look that nice either. smile.gif
far-lands
Listed building - hmm Well, I'll give you that - It may look a little out of place if put up in the wrong place.
And I suppose not having the telly on all the time , you have time to do other things...
like talk...

“So what you doing with 6Mb/s? Streaming 6 video streams to separate TVs? Unmentionable file transfers?

Have a look at mininova.org, then search for the following:

Simpsons
Family Guy
American Dad
Top Gear
Fifth Gear
CSI
Lost
Desperate Housewives
4400
Little Britain
Surface
Threshold
The Office
Weeds
etc…..

We don’t even want a satellite dish…

And if you want to abuse the 6000kbps you can get an account with giganews and download complete DVD’s in 1 hour 40 minutes, (normally takes 2 hours).
DeadCat
Can't forget Southpark and The Trailer Park Boys...
bbulldog
yes i know that t-online put the thumb on the speed.
will check that site out laugh.gif

I had a look at this thread right before Xmas and thought I may as well join in and also upgrade to a faster broadband speed, as it would work out cheaper for me as well - got my connection with Telekom and my flat rate with Tiscali. Got a letter today saying there would be a €49.95 one off fee for transferring which was the first I'd heard about this! When we called Telekom, they instantly said well, if no-one said anything to you, then we don't make you pay it - I was expecting a bit of a fight from them to be honest. Which kind of makes me think that I wasn't the first person to call them with this...

Mind you, I was meant to have my upgrade today - three minutes to midnight and I still don't have my faster connection yet!
