Every year in Munich there is a Chili cookoff. This is a competition to see who can cook the best and strongest chilli. Aswell as the chili contest, there are also live bands and other entertainments.

Last year (2003) the cookoff was hosted at Zic Zac and it'll be there again this year (2004).

Saturday 26th June 2004

See the short TT thread from the Munich Chili Cookoff 2003

...and the official homepage here: Munich Chili Cookoff

Amimeli gave me a teeny tiny flyer about this for June 26 this year, and I've lost it -- anyone know anything more about it?

I've still got mine at home somewhere, I will look for it tonight. I plan on making a batch for it...no mushrooms though wink.gif

Hello everyone,

I am the organizer of what is now the 5th annual (I can't believe it myself) Chili Cookoff. The details for this year are as follows:

-Date: Saturday, June 26th
-Time: 13:00, but nobody shows up that early (be there by 14:00 if you want to enter a chili)
-Place: Zic Zac (as always), 240 Rosenheimerstr.
-Attire: Cowboy/cowgirl or just summer stuff (it's outside)
-Music: Both kinds, Country AND Western (performed by Sub Ether Radio... under the name Sub Ether RODEO)
-Questions: Just call me at 0173 949 8995 or drop me a mail
-Entrance: €5 and and additional €5 if you want to enter chili (the cash from chili entries goes to whomever wins 1st place)

I sincerely apologize for the website not being updated yet... I've been trying to locate the FTP information. Please pass this on to anyone and everyone. The cookoff is always a blast - hope to see you there...

Not cooking any, but I play to try and come to sample some dry.gif I'm in a basketball tournament that weekend though so it will depend on my game times, hopefully we play that morning. No way I'm going to try and play AFTER eating all that chilli blink.gif
Brummie
small bounce. yum.

This looks good. Anyone else coming?
DrivinWest
Will be there with chili. Any idea how much to make though? I was gonna use my biggest pot but I fear it's still not enough.

Not too sure myself?? But will be cooking my batch Friday night

G. PYROTECHNICS - No chili contestant may discharge firearms or use any pyrotechnics or explosives at a chili cookoff. Contestants discharging firearms and/or using explosives or other pyrotechnics will be disqualified from the chili cookoff.

It says nothing about using pyrotechnics in the chili!

Taken from DrivinWest's search for Chilli ingredients

Now has anyone got any good tips for cooking a proper Chilli?

Normally I would knock one up within a couple of hours, only to learn that a chilli should literally brew for at least 6 hours before being ready!!

I would also put mushrooms in mine, but when I told my American friends this, I was met with a look of disgust huh.gif

Now I dont want to go to this cook off on Friday and either 1) Get laughed out of Zic Zac with my entry or 2) Manage to offend just about every chilli cook there tongue.gif

Plus I am not trying to cheat by stealing a recipe, or recipe ideas as there are that many variants of Chilli anyway. But some ingredients have advantages over others, so any tips people?

Good chilli should be made 24 hrs before its needed. The long it stands, the better the flavours blend together.
DrivinWest
I'm of the opinion that chili should be cooked to a gentle boil then left to simmer for a while. Some people say a few hours, some say overnight. I'm going to experiment a bit with this batch and I think I'm going to do an overnight simmer. Recipes are all over the place on this.

Mushrooms in chili? Meh!
TexasTornado
are you allowed to bring pre-made chill? that is a big no no in Texas. You must prepare on site or you'll be disqualified.

We usually start at 6:00 in the morning in order to make the 4:00 p.m. deadline for judging.
Gen
Hmm, I prefer New Mexico-style green chili with pork, but when in a Texas event, make a Texas-style chili... I'll show up, but probably without an entry. I know what my chili tastes like already and I want room to try other people's!

I just may show up, but without an entry. I'm from California, so I'll just have to wait for the burrito-making competition. wink.gif

@ Gen, I love Green Chili! first had it in Colorado only this version was made with chicken and navy beans. It was a health nuts attempt at low fat chili and they pulled it off.

@ InterplaneteJanet - burritos! I miss burritos so much I dream about them in my sleep. We have vowed that if and when we find a location for our pub, we will let our regular customers select the menu. a different menu each week for the first 8, guest select their favorite items. The final menu selctions will come from the custmers, the items that don't make the cut will go in the sepcial category only making the occassional appearance. So, I will need you there to vote on the burrito. Will let you know if this fantasy ever becomes reality.

@ Drivin'West - I sent you a PM regarding habanero peppers. I will donate spice and help cook, let me know if you need volunteers. The boyfriend will be at his kiosk on the Isar all weekend so I can help with prep work and cooking duties.
interplanetjanet
Lemme know and I'll be there! biggrin.gif

I've been trying to perfect my flour tortilla mixture. No way I'm paying €3.69 for what they sell here!
Brandon
Hello all,

It's Brandon again, the chili cookoff organizer. I know that back in Texas, you have to cook your chili on the spot, but let's face it, we're in Germany. As such, I would recommend cooking the chili the night before, three days before, or whatever you believe will make your chili the best. We will only have the facilities to re-heat the chili at Zic Zac.

Also, I should let you know that the chili judges are going to be very used to spicey fare... hint... and yes, this is a Toytown exclusive tip... we're only going to have native Texans as judges this year.

I have also received some questions about how much chili everyone should make. Well, theoretically you only need to make enough for the judges to do a tasting, but if you generous (or proud), then you can make more for the public to taste. I will bring plastic bowls and spoons so that everyone can taste all the chilis.

I'm touching wood right now, but I think that we're going to have good weather. Also, Zic Zac will be showing European Championship football, so why go anywhere else?

See you there!

Brandon
DrivinWest
I'm using my own recipe that is more Texan adaptation from what my father used to make. He called his "Chernobyl Chili" while was a pretty apt description of the taste.

I'm trying to come up with a name for mine and I'm at an absolute loss...

A freind of mine in the US (who is obsessed about the fact that Germans are obsessed with David Hasselhoff) suggested simply calling it "Hasselhoff." This got me thinking about calling it "A-Team Chili" and the slogan would be "Ich liebe es wenn ein Chili funtioniert!"

Any other suggestions? There are a few unique ingredients which might lend ideas for a name but sorry, I'm not telling anybody what they are smile.gif
butterbean
Well I would suggest DW that you have another American who lives in your neighborhood taste test your chili in advance of the competition. Someone who knows and loves spicy food...

Dammit, there I go again...spicy food... sad.gif [sound of big Lucille Ball style cry in the background]
Gen
I volunteer to do advance testing -- esp as from Brandon's post it doesn't sound like much of a regular batch will be left for any non-judges! (Wonder how you get that gig?)
Brandon
Years of culinary training of course!!! Seriously now, there is usually plenty of chili to go around for others - there will only be three judges and they will only have a spoonful. I also let the other cooks taste their competitions' chili before offering it to the general public last year, which worked pretty well. We will have a "chef's choice" prize.
Gen
Oh is that right? Chef's Choice? So we can compete against each other and judge each other and not rely on judges we don't know? 3 Lions, put in those mushrooms, make your chilli as you usually do, put it to the TTTest! That should be worth watching! Er, eating! Do chefs get beer with their entry fee to cool down each others' potions? Or is that where ZicZac gets something out of hosting the event?
3 Lions
Well I actually made a batch last week without mushrooms and as I said, the mushrooms just added to the quantity. So my chilli this week will have no mushrooms in it.

Oh and I finally have my chilli name...

Kill Chilli Vol.1 - It will be a roaring rampage of suck ass chilli tongue.gif
Gen
errr -- do you mean "kick ass" chili? Or is that another Britishism?

I'm thinking about "Gen-manipuliertes Chili". Har de har har.
3 Lions
I guess it depends on whether I 'Kick Ass' or 'Suck Ass' - My confidence is low especially when you are going up against a 'Chernobyl Chilli' variant!!

mmmm Chilli...

I'm gonna come along and partake... god help me!

Well, it turned out to be not exactly what you described. Congratulations with the first prize in the Chilli Cookoff!!

It was quite amusing looking at the faces of the people there when Ken said "...and I'm not even Texan!" biggrin.gif

(Pictures will be online soon)
interplanetjanet
Yeah, congrats for takin' home the prize! All of the chilis were yummy...

Hey,

What do you guys do for chilli beans? I've seen the tins in the shops, but non of them seem pre-cooked? - or am I totally wrong???

I await the knowledge of the chilli gods! wink.gif

@Poots

I used the kidney beans in chilli sauce for mine!! The chilli sauce in those things is crap and I thought it might hinder my chilli, but it really doesnt make any difference.

Big thanks to everyone again, Brandon the guy who runs this did a great job, the music was good too. Kevin, thanks for letting me use your kitchen. Aaron for making me realise that putting mushrooms in WOULD have made me a laughing stock tongue.gif And to all the other chef's, some great chilli there, winning was a bit of a shock!

Now on to next year!! I cant enter the same one again as I will be uploading the recipe to My Webpage soon. So I am going to get experimental with different chilli ideas over the next year.
don_riina
Well played Ken, sorry I could not make it.
