I've had a frustrating morning, after finding out that my internet source for prescriptions can no longer send to the EU, due to some fairly new regulations. So, now I have to get to a doctor to prescribe me some things I've been taking regularly for years.
Does anyone have any recommendations for
English-speaking doctors in Berlin? I only have expat insurance, so I'm hoping to find a doc who doesn't charge too ridiculously much for a consultation. I've been to
Dr. Liccini, who seems to be the only American general practitioner in town, but she has the bedside manner of a shark, so I'd like to try to find someone else, even if they're not a native speaker. The nice thing about Dr. Liccini was that her general consulation fee was only €36. Is there anyone else that cheap?
On a side note, at one doctor's office (a Frauenärtzin), the secretary couldn't tell me how much it cost for a standard exam. What's up with that? I just thought that was so weird... she said I would have to ask the doctor. I'm thinking, if this is going to cost me more than €200, I'll have to turn around and leave, because I just don't have that much to spend. What then? Grr... But, I have to do it because I can't order my birth control online anymore. I feel so helpless!
Sorry for the rant, and I appreciate any suggestions anyone can offer!

My kids use Dr Krasser, who trained in UK. He's out in West End (030) 3 04 12 31.
They're in the Krankenkasse, so i don't know what he charges otherwise.

Hello everyone!
If anyone living in Berlin is reading this and can personally recommend a good English speaking doctor in town, please let me know. I got a name from my pharmacist but the doc is never there, on holiday, at a seminar, attending lectures and has very odd working hours, no phone number on his door and the clinic reception don't seem to know anything. I will keep trying to get a hold of him but would like to see someone quite soon.
Many thanks in advance.
BTW the British Embassy sent me a list but they are all on the West side or miles from where I live, and if I register with one, would rather he was in Mitte, anywhere between Potsdamer Platz and Alex Platz!

Just a follow up in case someone else is interested. Found an English speaking GP in Mitte (Leipziger Strasse). He is very pleasant and on my first visit, practically asked for my entire health history and took all the time in the world through examination, Q&A etc, very thorough and with good bed side manners!
All the info on his website is in German but it's easy to navigate and self-explanatory.

This is a great search tool for Berlin doctors. It's in German, but pretty easy to figure out.
http://www.aerztekammer-berlin.de/50_Arztsuche/esuche.phpMy only comment is that my husband and I had bad experiences with Dr. Lisa Liccini in Charlottenburg. She's apparently the only American GP in Berlin, but the woman has the bedside manner of a shark!

I can only recommend my own doctor
he is pleasant and although doesn't know a lot of english can understand a lot so if he is not that busy then its okay will write out most perscriptions if you really want it and can probably tell you how much something will cost the receptionist is very nice as well the younger one and not the older one unfortunetly can take time to see the doctor but is open late on monday and thursday quite a cool doctor really because he's söightly unconventional I.E not german like
Richard, I think you forgot to mention your doctor's name.
Anyone have any experience with Cordula Christoph?

Hi
I live in Kreuzberg and am looking for an English speaking General practioner in this area. The website DivaRae posted is great, but I don't want my first experience with a GP being with a monster, so would rather not take a potshot. If anyone can recommend one around this area that would be ace!
thanks

I can recommend Dr. Neil Mac Lean in
Kreuzberg (directly across the street from U-bahn Schlesisches Tor)
http://www.aerztekammer-berlin.de/50_Arzts...817308&go=0He is quite pleasant and speaks perfect English and he has the added distinction of being the only doctor who took time to listen, properly diagnose, and prescribe medication that actually worked. In my particular case, this was a huge relief after visiting several doctors who misdiagnosed me and passed out inferior drugs! He shares the office with a German doctor Dr. Hahn who is also very friendly, but unfortunately, her English is not the best. Unless you feel comfortable articulating yourself in German, be sure to insist upon Dr. Mac Lean.
A good one in Mitte that I can recommend is Dr. Mario Voß. He is located at Friedrichstr. 128 x Oranienburgerstr. He speaks English and seems quite knowledgeable. The only downside is that he is often very busy and has rather odd opening hours (if you do not have an appt.)
Dr.med. Mario Voß

For all your other problems, I would recommend going to the Aertzezentrum at the Axle-Springer Passage. The few doctors I have been to were excellent and spoke perfect English, plus all of the offices are very clean and modern.

Perhaps Dr. Liccini had a bad day when DivaRae visited, because I went to her and was completely satisfied with her professionalism and her bedside manner. Even though I had read DivaRae's comment, the prospect of not being misunderstood was too much, so I scheduled an apointment with Dr. Liccini, and was completely satisfied. Both my wife and I will use her services now for the remainder of our time in Berlin.

In case anyone's still looking for a decent doctor in Mitte, I went to see one this morning (with a sense of impending doom) and she turned out to be pretty good so I thought I'd recommend her. The practice is Praxisteam Mitte, Neue Schoenhauser Str. 10, 10178 Mitte. The doctor's name is Dr Dorothea Schleehauf.
I am a member of a Krankenkasse but the receptionist explained that if I weren't she would just need to see my EHIC (the card that replaced the E111 form in the UK). I didn't have to wait too long to see the doctor and she made me feel completely at ease, asking all about my symptoms etc but also making a bit of small talk about where I work etc. I managed to explain everything in German but she speaks pretty good English too.
Hope that helps some people!

I just saw Dr. Liccini (see above for address) after trying and failing to make an appointment with three other offices. Dr. Liccini was clearly very busy treating a line of patients (I came during the appointment-free "emergency" hours), but she was professional, courteous, and competent. I recommend her to anyone seeking a general practitioner.

Maybe Dr. Liccini has heard some of the complaints and is getting her act together? I had negative experiences with her office more then once and over a period of 3 years, but hey .. things change.

Hi everyone,
I was at an American doctor's office in Wilmersdorf this week and found her to be very friendly, knowledgable, and completely in the know about both the German and American medical system. I hardly waited at all and she also has Saturday office hours. Here is the info for anyone who needs a family doctor:

I went to Dr. Neil Mac Lean surgery and wasn't too impressed. I only needed a doctor's certificate for my new krankenkasse. He looked at the papers of questions, and I told him there was more than the first page. We went through the first page fairly slowly, then he turned over and saw there was more and wasn't very happy. It wasn't so awful, I didn't have to wait very long, and they charged me less that they actually asked for initially. Also a nurse or doctor kept interrupting and coming in to get things in the curtained off section where the appointment was. Bit of a strange experience and I don't know if I'd go back.

Hi all,
This thread and various others were very helpful while searching for a doctor.
I would recommend Dr Cordes in Friedrichshain. Her address was in another thread but i'll stick it here too.

I went to Dr. Neil MacLean based on the referrals from other Toytown users and found he was great. Without insurance the visit which got me the prescription i was looking for cost something around 20euros. There was office staff who spoke English as does he. He was friendly and cheerful and patient - dare I say he even had a better bedside manner than my regular doctor back home. He also took extra time to get me set up with a generic version of the medication I needed because it cost a fraction of the price. I will go back next time I need to see someone.

Dear all,
after some years in Germany, I am embarassed to say that I still don't know hw it works here
If you wake up a morning and you feel sick, or if you have been sick for some days and you want to see a doctor as soon as possible, do you simply go to the doctor, pay your ten Euro for the "Quartal" or do you have to call and ask for a "Termin"?
Thanks for your help!

i think some places ask that you make an appointment first but these can be tricky to come by at short notice.
i just went there as soon as they opened, they asked for my health insurance card (i had a EU Card that replaced the e111 form in the UK) and my passport and then a 10Euro 'praxis fee', and then waited as they saw ppl in the order they arrived. i dont know if all surgeries are like that though. some have designated appoinment and non appoinment times i think.
i'm no expert but i hope that helps

I called today and the woman at the telephone spoke a very bad English, is it normal to have a "Termin" for the day after or should you usually wait longer?

I can second Leah's recommendation. A few days before leaving Berlin I realized I had an antibiotic-resistant infection (at least to the antibiotics I was using to self-medicate). I went to Dr. Schleehauf who worked with me very quickly and efficiently, given that I needed a lab test completed and antibiotics prescribed and purchased in 3 days or less. She personally called the lab to speed things up and the replacement antibiotics ended up working as I was making my way to Spain. In addition, she actually has a bedside manner! And a good one! Her location is SO easy, as well, very close to Weinmeisterstr. U-Bahn. And for those who don't speak much German, some of her staff speak English -- not all so you should ask for one who does. When back in Berlin I'll definitely be using her as my doctor.

I can third the recommendation of Dr med. Dorothea Schleehauf. (Check out the website
www.praxisteammitte.de) She was very nice and even gave me two referrals for other English speaking doctors. The OBGYN (Arztin fur Gynakologie und Geburtshilfe) she recommended was quick and confident; she had great bedside manner. Dr Schleehauf called her during my consultation and she took me right away. Her name is Dr. Maria Pfeuffer and is located on Pohlstrasse 65 near the corner of Potsdamer Str.(U-bahn Kurfurstenstr.). I don’t have insurance and the full breast exam she did cost 82 euro. The office phone number is (030)2641001. I haven’t been to Dr. Schleehauf’s second recommendation yet but I will report once I have been.

Hello everyone,
my fiancé (from Seattle) is going to move to Berlin in November.
Since he doesn´t speak any German yet I´m looking for English speaking infrastructure, such as a doctor, a dentist, and also a (marriage or psychotherapy) counselor.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I have been going to Dr. Liccini for about 3 months and I am satisfied with her. She is a bit brusque, not rude but quite crisp, but I find her to be conscientious and knowledgeable---she was up-to-date with current research findings and good about following up. I don't feel warm and cozy with her, but I feel secure that if I do my part she'll do hers.
Still looking for a good dentist---tried Dr. Glock in K'berg on my insurer's rec, nice, friendly but charged more and delivered less than my expensive Central Park South fancy dentist in NYC.

BTW, I just posted at 2:09am CET, why does the board report this post as 7:09PM? Not that it matters, just curious.
