Airlines to North of England

Hello all

I'm sure this has been already asked and answered and so apologies for repetition - I would like to know of flights from the dortmund area to the north of england. So far I've found BMI and BA (very expensive), and easyjet to Liverpool - are there any others I haven't thought of?

TIA
Neil
From Dortmund you can only fly to Luton at the moment, depending
where in northern England you want to go to you might be better off flying
with Ryanair from Weeze (Düsseldorf Niederrhein -104km from Wetter)
to Glasgow Prestwick which is an 70km south of the city and only a bit
more than an hour from the border and hiring a car. I paid 70€ 2 weeks
ago, but I have done it for 20€ return inc. tax, there is also a railway station
connected to the airport.
Mairinger
Thanks Neil. I think that's a bit too far north for me, I'm going to Liverpool. The problem with the Easyjet to Liverpool flight is that its in the afternoon, which is very inconvenient.

I think I'll go in the evening to East Midlands, and then drive up.

Thanks for suggestion biggrin.gif

Air Berlin Paderborn-Lippstadt to Manchester

HLX Fly Cologne to Manchester Daily departing daily @ 6PM

http://www.hlx.com/en/index.html

And they will also be Starting a Hannover-Manchester service next March!
bendus2
Just to let you know the Cologne to East Midlands times have got (in my opinion) better. It now leaves late on a Friday night (around 21.00) and late return on a Sunday (18.00)

If you book long enough in advance you can sometimes get flights from Düsseldorf to Manchester for around 100 euros with Lufthansa.

For anyone else who lives down here in Südbaden (wishful thinking), easyJet fly from Basel to Liverpool.
eminence
I am here in Suedbaden, in Waldshut about 50 mins from Basel. There are some of us around.
Hannah
any idea for going to Liverpool or Manchester (Frankfurt, Cologne, Hahn would be ok)

going there on Dec. 23rd late afternoon, or 24th in the moring,
Return 27th

Guess we could have picked no better time, the flights are dead expensive mad.gif
Loopy
BA does Frankfurt to Manchester, the prices are normally not too bad (my most frequent route) but it will cost you an absolute bomb to fly back on the 27th.

You could try HLX - Cologne to Manchester

@Simon: just noticed your post - I'm in the South as well biggrin.gif
Hannah
the problem is, that if we go, we have to be back on the 28th latest
Hannah
i tried BA and LH first, costs a bomb. The low cost airlines are not really cheap aswell on xmas plus to get there on train or by car is not really worth doing it then sad.gif
violentviolet
How about taking the ferry instead? P&O go daily from Rotterdam to Hull and back, departure is 9 PM on both sides and arrival something between 8 and 9 AM, to Cologne it's only a 4 hours drive from Rotterdam and since it's a night crossing you might lose less time than with flying. We pay 180 quid for two persons + car return, prices might have gone up a bit now since it's closer to christmas.
Loopy
you could try KLM, they do a cheap Europe fare if you book less than 7 days before your outward bound flight - not tried it myself, not been feeling brave enough! The other drawback is, it will take a lot longer as it is normally two flights.
Hannah
I gave up. The cheapest we found (apart from ferries, which takes to long to go to Liverpool and back just for 3 days) was over 400 Euros for us both PLUS train ticket or parking the car at the airport.
We try again next week, maybe something changed then. If we can't find anything cheaper we just might go to Mallorca, which seems cheaper (including Hotel and breakfast) biggrin.gif
It's not that we can't afford it but this is nuts. My bf does not miss his family so much, so he'll be ok if we won't go.
Adi
Easyjet (Köln-Liverpool) costs about €240 per person.
reggie
Hannah, I just found HLX flights for you from Köln to Manchester for €429,94 for the two of you (possibly the €400+ flights you just talked about), but instead of waiting till next week, try their Happy Hour offers this evening or tomorrow (Tues. 18:00 till Wed. 24:00), you might find the same flights a bit cheaper.

@Reggie: have you booked from the Happy Hours? Everytime I've looked the flights always seem to be in 6 months time.
reggie
Yes, several times, but it does tend to depend on how far in advance you book. Last Xmas, for example, I'd already booked my flights in September and got a return for €40 (incl. taxes); if you leave it till just before peak period, you're going to have to expect limited availability and therefore higher prices. This year I got my Xmas flights booked a couple of weeks ago for about €130 return (Stuttgart-Manchester), which I thought was all right considering how late I'd left it and the fact that it's the Xmas period. If you can afford to be very flexible (one of the benefits of being freelance!) and Lady Luck's on your side, you can still get reasonable deals not too far ahead.
Loopy
Thanks Reggie, will try that next time - I can be flexible, just not normally that organised!

Easyjet (Köln-Liverpool) costs about €240 per person.

Thanx Adi, this and with HLX is what I found too. but 480 Euros PLUS going to Cologne on train...nah thanx, we rather spend the money on something else smile.gif

Reggie...a bit cheaper is still expensive isnt it biggrin.gif
Hannah

Gesamtpreis 2305.00€

thanx far-lands honey tongue.gif

Real good offer...try the same thing on xmas then your price actually looks even cheap wink.gif
Adi
Germanwings flies Köln-Birmingham for about €80 (return) per person on the dates you wanted. Hire car from BHX to Manchester still wouldn't cost that much per day to make the trip. Cheaper than by train for sure.
Jay
http://de.lastminute.com quote a BA price of €273 return for Frankfurt to Manchester.

But you have to fly via Heathrow from FRA to MAN. Direct flight coming back.

(I did not look at the times in detail.)

Hope that helps.

Or:
Hinflug: 23.12.2005
ab 19:30 Frankfurt (FRA)
an 20:20 Manchester (MAN)

Rückflug: 27.12.2005
ab 14:25 Manchester (MAN)
an 21:30 Frankfurt (FRA)

is €279 per person
Hannah
279 Euros EACH seems dead expensive to me. Doesnt it to you? ohmy.gif

I will try the german wings site thanx
far-lands
I paid € 190 for 2 to travel on Dec 28th to stanstead from stutters. Bloody robdogs - all of them !!!
Hannah
Adi, how did you do it?

7:10 from Cologne on 23rd is to early sad.gif We can only fly late afternoon.

next flight is only on Monday 26th to Birmingham mad.gif

but even going on 23rd would be 138 Euros each return (if I take a monday flight back for 20,00 +tax)

Plus car or train to Cologne plus car or train from Birmingham to Liverpool... hmmm...FERKEN shite mad.gif
Adi
Ja. I looked at 07:10 dep on 23rd Dez. It tells me now: 56€ Köln-Birmingham and €40 for return (dep 08:10 from BHX on 27 Dez) ...per person.
Hannah
PLUS tax smile.gif
thanx trotzdem biggrin.gif
Adi
Nichts zu danken.
Jay
I think 270 is roughly the price I have always paid to go home at Xmas (Manchester airport being the nearest to Bradford)...so seems about average for me. mellow.gif

(Although this year I go to Tokyo to see my sister.)
reggie
Jay, did you ever try Sabena to Bradford? I used to use them frequently from Frankfurt via Brussels to Yeadon. Until about 5 years ago when I caught a return flight and landed in Brussels, desperately looking for my return flight to Frankfurt and I was told, "I'm sorry, there are no more Sabena flights" and that was it -- Sabena Airlines existed no more! I ended up having to spend the night in Brussels and caught a Swissair flight the following morning from Brussels via Zurich to Frankfurt. At least I got a free Sabena t-shirt off them, which might be worth a couple of bob by now... wink.gif
Jay
Never tried any of the flights to Yeadon. It only takes 45 minutes to get from Manchester airport to Bradford.
So no time saving by transferring, probably costs a little more, and the chance of a delay so missing your next flight connection. blink.gif
KazAV
Just paid around 200€ for my 13 year old son to fly out from manchester to Cologne on 19th December and back on 4th Jan - that was the cheapest for Xmas! Daft thing is, if he flew out on 26th Dec, he could fly for 6,49 € plus charges. That`s what you pay for convenience I suppose.
bendus2
HLX offering good deals for flights in January. Just tax to pay. Cologne Manchester for around 50 euros return.
Hannah
LH getting worse and worse. over 700 now for us both.
Tried Aer Lingus to Dublin then from Dublin to Liverpool or Manchester. The flights in UK are really cheap but not really from here to Dublin if you have to add the domestic flights. And shite flight times.
Guess we go to Schwarzwald.
(I fould Mallorca 500 Euros 2 ppl inkl. Flight, Hotel and breakfast that's just nuts isnt it) mad.gif
Hannah
LH went down to 442 Euros for us both again on the exact dates we wanna go. Maybe nobody books it for this prices and it will get cheaper, if we wait still longer cool.gif
Not bothered if we won't go though ph34r.gif

@ Hannah

I booked a flight FRA->MAN recently, going out 25.12 coming back on 31.12. (yes, they do fly on xmas day) for me and my son. It cost EUR 206 all-in.

Try putting in silly dates like Christmas day, might be a bit cheaper.

Ben
Hannah
we only can go 23rd until 27. Going back 26 doesn't make it cheaper. Thanx anyway smile.gif
