Expatriate population statistics for Germany

Cities with the most English-speaking expats

I was under the impression that Frankfurt was the most international city in Germany. However, in another discussion on this forum someone suggested that Bavaria has the biggest expat population. Is it true? Does anyone really know? Is it lies?

I would like to know where the most expats are in Germany, in particular Brits.

What about in Europe, or in the whole world?

I would guess: Frankfurt, Spain, Dubai

We found 155 Canadians in Munich, at the Canadian club. Try doing that in Frankfurt.

Frankfurt has 623 Canadians...

No one knows really

More are leaving than coming
Tommy
Purple Muffin how many brits are in Frankfurt?
Purple Muffin
Do you think I know off the top of my head?

I do't know that many Brits here actually.

Possibly 8000 to 10000 Brits in Hamburg. Not sure really. Would be interesting to find out... How many native German Scotland fans in Kilts there are is debatable, but they do exist! laugh.gif

No insults intended, but has anyone translated Darmstadt the town/city?

= intestine city

Where did the name come from?

I just found it amusing the last time I saw the town mentioned. wink.gif

Statistics on English speakers in Munich (kindly provided by Editor Bob of Toytown):

The total population of Munich is about 1.27 million. The non-German population is 290 thousand, i.e. 23% of the total. The majority of foreigners are, in order of decreasing numbers, from Turkey, the former Yugoslavia, Italy, and Greece.

There are 12,200 foreigners in Munich from countries where the official language is English. That is just under 1% of the total population of 1.27 million Munich residents. The breakdown by country is as follows:

United States: 5,074 (.4%)
Great Britain: 4,559 (.36%)
Ireland: 878 (.07%)
Canada: 761 (.06%)
Australia: 607 (.05%)
South Africa: 229 (.02%)
New Zealand: 100 (.01%)

Your biggest English speaking community in Germany is probably Kaiserslautern, It is little America. There are approximately 20,000 US military and their families stationed there. Even the local supermarkets take US dollars. You could definitely live there and never have to speak German.

Well I be dammed. Frankfurt has a much larger expat comunity.

Apparently Frankfurt region has 22m500 Americans and 14m400 Brits. As well as 85 Consulates, and 59 Foreign chambers and trade missions and 58 Foreign Tourist offices. As well according to them there are also 180 foreign business and social clubs. That part I find hard to believe, I only know of 4 or 5.

I would supect that the numbers include a large amout of Army persoanl which for expat reason I don't count! Bottom line is that Munich has a much larger and much more active expat social life.

Either way Frankfurt is home and Munich is where I work.
