Oh bugger, can they give points to a British license? Or just increase the fine?
bbulldog
they will put the points against your name. they have your address so you are a resisent in germany. they can even find out for how long. might be problems if they check to see if you have a license.
luke
why a problem? he has a Uk licence.
Weeman
EU Licence, not UK Luke?
jg.
A UK license is an EU license, even if it is not the "European Communities Model". The EU decided that a license issued in a member state that is currently valid in that state will be valid elsewhere in the EU.

I had a fine from Belgium last year. I have been told that it would have been enough to lose my license if I was Belgian - but I just had a higher fine instead.

We had an incident of a German worker totalling a hire car pissed in Portugal in 2002, it got to court where the judge adjourned it, and the police had a polite word and told him to f*ck off out of Portugal and never come back.

He's still got his licence, and unbeliveably still works for our company.
Weeman
I have been caught speeding a number of times since I left the UK.

As jg quite rightly says, the local authorities just increase the fine as it is the easiest way to process the offence.

It's not big, and it's not clever, but it's alot better than loosing your licence!

They automatically take 5km/h off the speed you were doing. So you might be only 25km/h over limit.

The above saved me losing my licence once.

Usually it is 10% Toleranz so you can probably take 10 km/h off and then there is another rule about another 4 or 5 km/h on top of that. Someone explained it to me here once when I got caught doing 60 in 50. I never got a ticket. It may not be as bad as you think
ablehalle
On the other hand your speedo might be faulty and you lose your licence.
RMA
That's why I find it very nice of about three towns/villages not far from home who regularly put up one of these "Your speed is ..." radar sets, just to enable me to calibrate my speedo at 50, 60, 70 or whatever I happen to feel is convenient at the time! biggrin.gif

30 nicker!

I'm happy with that biggrin.gif

I was only going 87 ohmy.gif

Did you get a nice picture of yourself too?

As a UK licence owner you get points taht are valid only in Germany, noted in Flensburg against youe name, address and DOB. They are valid for 2 years and you need to be points free for 2 years for them to be deleted. If not they accumulate till you get a 2 year period points free. I believe once you reach14 or 18 its is a ban here. I'm on 9... blink.gif All for ABahn speeding...how I laugh when I hear about all the unlimited roads in Germany unsure.gif
Jay
Can you not blame it on the fact that you do not see the 120km/h speed restrictions on the autobahn when you're travelling at top speed?
Co-incidentally there was a programme on German TV about this last year.

But anyway I wait for my next speeding fine. I have a good collection of them. I wonder if can sell them off on ebay. unsure.gif

I just got a new one in town, 35 in a 30 zone, €15!!

Wankers.

if you want to get off with blame somebody else he really has to look very similar to you because them pics are so good nowadays that you can see a pimple on your nose (I know by own experience) :$

I've managed to tot up 9 points in Germany over the last 5 years :$ , unfortunately no clear 2 year period in there so its a round total. I've paid the 3 fines(3x3points) as they arrived. However much to my surprise I received a letter from the Landkreis today that effectively told me about some driver training that could reduce my points :$(couldn't understand it all) . However it appears they want to charge me €23.50 for telling me that. Can anyone help me out and explain what is happening with regards to the €23.50, is it an admin charge or a charge for a suggested course or am I the only speedy one out there and no one else has been there ph34r.gif

Cheers

It's quite simple:

For "Ordnungswidrigkeiten" with a fine of over 40 EUR, you get points, depending on what you did. These get deleted after 2 years, if you don't commit another offence, otherwise they stay for 10 years.

If you get to more than 8 points, you get the opportunity to reduce those by doing the driver training. You can also take a psychological consultancy. This reduces the points tally by 2, but only once in 5 years.

If you don't do the training, and get to 14 points, you have to do the training but the points total won't be reduced anymore. You can get 2 back by taking the psycho.

At 18 points, you lose your licence automatically, and you will be subject to a psychological test.

The points can build up very quickly, because some things carry up to 7 points.

If you can understand German, you can see how many points you get for what here.

The best thing you can do is take the training, and stop driving so fast.
Harry
How can you find out your points tally? I twice got a letter saying i'd got a fine with points, but I don't know if the first one had expired before i got the second.
Adi
You can request a report from Flensburg but it costs. I forget how much.
Jay
According to http://www.kba.de/ and if you click the 'Union Jack' it says the service is free.

Now, I am curious about my point tally.

Here's also a document explaining the point system:

Only just read this thread...

So what you are saying cammy is that you got a letter from them explaining this and a bill for 23,50 for this letter!

Well i would not pay it as you did not ask for this info.
cammy-bb
I phoned them up , they said that I need to pay as its the state warning me about my driving and as such I need to pay for the service...lovely ph34r.gif . I also had to give a copy of my licence to them despite having previously shown it to the Police when caught. Sounds like a good tax scheme :$

Well, pionts do mean prizes !!! ph34r.gif

What pisses me off the most is that on he second occasion I was only 1 month from the 2 year limit and 2 months short on the 3rd...bugger bugger bugger ohmy.gif

Repentance?

Honestly, I drive fast(er than allowed) a lot the time, but have only ever had 1 point for it in 21 years.

There is a simple rule of thumb:

If you never drive more than 20 over (10 over in a 30 limit, because they like to do you for inappropriate speed in a danger zone), you will never get points, only a warning (Verwarnungsgeld). Unless you get caught doing it too often, that is.

Beware: They can take your license away and required you to take a test, or even declare you unfit to drive a motor vehicle for life, if you get caught very often for minor offenses (including parking). This is known as Unbelehrbarkeit (intransigence), as the fines are supposed to teach you a lesson.

It used to be that they couldn't do you for more than one of the same offense in one day, but they repealled that rule a couple of years back. So if you get blitzt in the morning, take easy for the rest of the day ;-)

Addendum: If you are going fast on the Autobahn, and you see one of those "red-ringed with numbers in" in the distance, reduce your speed to a max of 130-140 before it -- There are no speed limits of more than 130 in Germany, and they do check your speed immediately after the signs, and just before a de-restriction.

Speed indicator boards in Germany - the challenge:
Rebecca
Those speed counters are so distracting. We had one near us for while, I nearly drove off the road looking at how fast I was going, comparing my car's speedo to that on the board.
