Trucks on the 'school run'?!?!

Perfect timing...

For my sins, I drive about 65km to work, from Nienburg to Hannover.
All 'summer' dry.gif it's been pretty clear and not much traffic, but most of the schools started again this morning in Niedersachsen and I expected a bit more action.
What I didn't expect was the sudden return of all the trucks on the A2, there was a good few kms of trucks near Lahe.
Do lots of truckers with kids take their kids to school? biggrin.gif
Or do they really manage to arrange their holidays exactly with the school holidays? (yesterday it was no where near as bad)
Or is it my worst fear, loads of parents just taking their kids to school and bunging the whole road system up? dry.gif

I never thought I'd say this, but I prefer driving here to Canada, although they have allot more space (parking is just fab, spots are a good 3 feet (1mtr) wider, it was hard getting used to the size of the trucks on the road. Here in Germany for the most part trucks are limited to the right lane and 90k per hour, in Canada everyone including trucks run about 120 plus truck drivers think nothing of sitting in the left lane passing cars!! I was driving down the KW expressway and I got passed by a truck, I'm not used to that.

It was also the sheer size of everything, in Europe the Mazda MPV or the VW Tourage may be the biggest vehicles around but in North America they are by far the smallest in the class. It seems every second vehicle is an SUV or over sized pickup, think Dodge RAM 2500. I have an older Dodge Minivan (an oxymoron if I ever heard one) and it was nice sitting up high, even if it was one of the smallest vehicles around.

I was surprised considering the price of oil, that the cost of petrol hasn't risen in the last few weeks. When I arrived petrol was 85 cents a litre when I left it had hit $1,05 a litre and all the stations were upgrading the signs to 3 digits.

Just paint a '1' in front of the 2 digits!

I expect the european stations will need 4 digits before too long! I always said my salary has got the decimal point in the wrong place and it must be a big mistake.

My lasting memory of driving in Canada (apart from the bad signposting) was huge trucks belting down the overtaking lane seeming to want to knock me off of the road.

I have to agree with you on that one! Plus sheer size of the trucks shows you for a loop at first!
