so, evidently the world has been going crazy about some genius, washed up a few months ago somewhere in London. It now transpires that after a global effort to find his origins, he is the son of a farmer in Bayern. He can't play the piano, despite astounding medical staff with his virtuoso skills.

Am I the only one who "missed this completely" until it was solved?

And another thing .. after 4 months of treatment, this guy suddenly says "ich bin ok", and all the doctors say "alright then mate, off you go", and discharge him. Strikes me as a little strange ...

Well apparently he did only strike one key repeatedly for most of the time, but as he was though to be ill ... and the English medical authorities have said they will be sueing him for costs.

The story got quite a lot of coverage when it first happened, and my morning paper had the story this morning.

What I don't get is that if we can't play the piano, why did the hospital staff say tha he put on such a performance?

The actual story I read, is that he was washed up on a beach in Dorset or so he says. He gave the impression to the local authorities that he was traumatised by his 'ordeal' (At the time they thought he had fallen from a boat and swam ashore)
As he would not speak to the medical people, they assumed he was mentally ill.

They called him Piano man because he was asked to write his name on a piece of paper and he drew a grand piano (therefore someone naturally (Why??) assumed he was a virtuoso performer). He apparently could only repeatedly strike one key on a piano.

After about three months in the hospital the nurse came in one day and and asked him if he was going to speak and he replied "yes I think I will"

I also read he had worked in a mental health hospital here in Germany and had 'copied' the mannerisms of autistic and mentally ill people (very well apparently!) He also said he drew a Grand piano as it was the first thing that came into his head. The Local authority is very angry and trying to charge him for the time he spent in the hospital and for wasting their time

Sounds to me like it has all the makings of an 'independent film'

What a media hoax!!! Just another reason to second/third guess everything you read and hear in the media.

Now if that isn't a dead give away that the dude is German, well I just don't know what is!!? blink.gif

I'm still confused. So were the hospital staff lying about the piano performance, or did the media just completely misrepresent them?
