Hi there,

I'm looking for some music shops in Munich where they have classic guitars. Could you please tell me?

I know a shop named "Manhattan" but forgot the address.

Thanks
bex
Im not sure exactly what kinda guitars they have but I know of two music shops in Munich.

the first is on Sonnenstrasse, of the left hand side as you walk from Karlsplatz Stachus to Sendlingertor. (about 1/3 of the way down)

The second is at Frauenplatz, go down Kaufinger/neuhausenstrasse till you get to Gap, take that left turn and its on your left just before the church and opposite the body shop.
noddy
there is a fairly big guitar shop on augustiner str. between brienner str. and karls str.

there is also what looks like a turkish guitar shop/school on dachauer str., just north of sand str. near the aussie shop
thyroid
I know an English (actually Cornish) guy who runs a guitar shop in Murnau.

Yes, I know it's not in Munich, but make a trip of it. It's a nice place.

I think it's called Jones's Music or summat loike dat.

There's also the "Music Store/Shop(?)" located at the OEZ (near Mcdonalds and Sports Express). They are quite big and also have a decent range of Guitars, amps etc there.

Just to elaborate on Bex's comments
The one on Sonnenstrasse is Lindberg

Pretty OK range of guitars upstairs, particularly a good selection of Ovation guitars. Got one there myslef 2 weeks ago.

If by classic you mean classical, then the one on Frauenplatz is probably better. Don't know really, I don't pay much attention to classicals anymore, but the Frauenplatz place is more classical full stop(period).
jeremy
I recommend The Music Shop in the OEZ. Massive store with everything in it.

By the way don't try out the guitars. I tried out a Stratocaster once through a POD amp simulator (great toy) but when I finished with the guitar they said "Don't put it on the rack, leave it to one side we will wash it after you have used it!"

Not so friendly.
Keydeck
My favourite is the one already mentioned on Sonnenstraße. Very nice bunch of blokes working there.

There used to be a huge place on Landsbergerstr but it's gone now. I think it was called Music Markt, in which case they are now based on Siegesstr which is located between Münchner Freiheit and the Englischer Garden. Their website is http://www.musikmarkt.com They also appear to sell some second-hand kit. Worth checking out.

There's a shop that sells guitars on Weißenburger Platz near the Outland aussie bar.
MommyinDE
there is one down the road from me on fürstenriederstr. which turns into neuriederstr. If you are coming by ubahn it's the u3 all the way to fürstenried west then the bus to the rathaus I forget the name of it but if you need any specific directions let me know
Torsten
I hope you haven't bought a guitar yet. 'Manhattan' is right as being an inside tip from locals about the most affordable music store is the small one on Rosenheimerstraße, on the left hand side as you head out of the city away from Rosenheimerplatz S-Bahn stop.

Nice guys in there and they are quite competitive with prices. Though I have to admit the guy who runs The Music Store up at Olympia is worth paying a few extra bucks to watch in action - loud outbursts of exuberance, and astoundingly good customer service.
Good luck and take your time finding the right one.

I was in the shop on Rosenheimer the other day just looking around...One word: Sweet!!

I'm brand new in town and need to know where to go to get a new pickup. Any suggestions huh.gif

Lindberg on Sonnenstr should be able to sort you out. I've bought kit there before and have had no problems.

This thread appears to be a good opportunity to post pictures of your equipment (musical, that is)...lets see some nice carved maple tops

I couldn't resist...

Bit fingerprinty tho...

You don't seriously want a pic of my Roberta on here do you?

do you know, I've never named one of mine...but in answer to you question, yes !

There's also a luthier who sells mostly classical but a few electric guitars on the corner of Lindenschmidtstr and Kidlerstraße. The shop is called Hartwig (tel 779251). It's not very big but they make all sorts of bizarre stringed instruments, not just guitars.

I think Manhattan Music overprices their stuff.

And as far as I know, Music Shop is not in the OEZ, it's next to the big Conrad store outside on Hanauerstraße 91a

Also as far as I know, the shop on Augustenstr is called Live Lights Music.
Sin
I do this short-cut through Pasing to get to the Nürnberger autobahn, and I've noticed a music shop which looks mostly 'classical' on the road south away from Pasing Marienplatz. I'm driving past tomorrow so I'll note the name.
eurovol
Take a trip to Augsburg. Lots of places to choose from, but you will need a car. Seems that when the army moved out, they all left their musical instruments behind.
Luap
Having lived in Munich the last 5 years and played guitar for the last 15 I have always been eager to find the best stores, so here goes:
Live Lights Music (Augustenstr. 15, www.llm.de), speak to Claudio for guitars, great guy, very helpful. They also do price matching, so go there with your cheapest internet price and they will match it.
Lindberg (Sonnenstr.) not so knowledgeable IMO, a salesperson once told me I wouldn't hear much difference between a fixed, strings thru body bridge and a floyd rose system, but friendly and they also do pricematching.
Musikshop (OEZ), everytime I have been there they have been unfriendly SOBs, overly eager to shove products down your throat that and get pissy if you don't buy what you try.
Folkladen (used to be at Rosenheimer Platz, is now in Einsteinstr), VERY friendly, great deals on strings, very good acoustic guitars and good for beginners stuff.
East Side Musik, (Pariser Str near Ostbahnhof), 2nd hand store, tries to overcharge, but easy to haggle with, massive selection of acoustics, some real bargains can be found there
Manhattan, (Rosenheimer Str, near Rosenheimer Platz), 2nd hand, good selection of electrics, friendly, they do repairs too.
Munich Repair Shop, (Breisacher Str. 4 near Ostbahnhof), repair shop (who'da guessed smile.gif ) and also home of Steve's custom guitars, great people, very knowledable about repairs. I have my guitars refretted here. good stuff !

A great place is www.thomann.de, they have everything and deliver very quickly and cheaply. I order most of my stuff from there.

Thanks for the itemized list...beats the cut/copy and track biggrin.gif

Any idea's on scoring a 60's version Gibson 335 at one of these joints?
Luap
You might be in luck, someone where I work is looking to sell a 335 I think, I will get back to you tomorrow.
As long as you are looking to actually buy a real Gibson and pay big ££ for it smile.gif
Sin
@Luap

You forgot MusicEck on Corneliusstr. (just off Muller Str.). These guys always give us (the band) Thomann prices and are willing to trade our secondhand gear in for new stuff. They're small, but we like dealing with them rather than the big boys.

Actually, while we're on the subject of repairs (see I DO look at the thread title sometimes), my amp is getting near service time. I've heard that there is a private tube guru here in Munich (who's not gonna rip me off like the MusicShop did - FIVE HUNDRED and fucking EIGHTY EUROS!!! They did the bleedin' job BEFORE asking me if I wanted it, when all I asked for was a quote, and then wouldn't let me have the amp back until I had paid for it, AND said if I hadn't paid for it in 6 weeks that they would be obliged to sell it. They're fuckin' sharks - BE WARNED! The kids had to starve that month. Grrrr).

I have a 6 valve Ampeg SVT-II that will need new tubes and probably a ground loop investigation in mid-April.

Has anybody ever heard of this tube guru and how I would contact him?
Luap
@ Sin

well you learn something new everyday! I didn't even know that shop smile.gif
I forgot another one too, it's a bit outside of Munich but pretty good.
Charlie's Musik Laden, they do repairs too, I had my old Valvestate practise amp repaired there, and it was pretty cheap. Never heard of that tube guru though.

As a beginner I love the guitars in the music shop in OEZ but find the people there totally in love with themselves and unfriendly.

Hi Jeremy
Its a sad fact of life (I've been going into music shops fo 30 years) that most staff in these places are like that.
It could be that they have to put up with endless renditions of "Smoke on the water" or "smells like teen spirit" but thats a hazard they should learn to live with.

There are exceptions as some folks have posted here, when you find a shop you're comfortable with you'll keep going there.

Augsburg is supposed to be good for misic shops i've heard
Sin
OK I'm back (long day).

That music shop in Pasing is called Music Leinhard, Planeggerstr. 12

Looks very classical to me from driving past. One day it will be opening hours when I go past and I'll pop in.

Night.

I´m looking to buy an electric guitar but have found them to be pretty expensive here. Does anyone know of a secound hand store anywhere in Munich that sells musical instruments?

barfly.

as said previously in this thread, there is Manhattan Music Store on Rosenheimer Str. (between Rosenheimer Platz and Ostbahnhof) and one on Pariser Str. (near Ostbahnhof). Make sure to haggle

Damn!!! dry.gif I just snapped a string! How much is this going to set me back?? And can some body please tell me if I have to replace all my strings now or just the one I managed to snap??? (Yes, I am a beginner and don't know all the in's and outs yet)
Keydeck
Strings kick in from about €25 each.

Ok, they don't really but they will vary quite a lot depending on quality (and brand name snobbery). For me, it would depend on how long I've had the strings on the guitar as to whether I'd replace them all or not. Generally I'll buy two packs when I'm out so as to always have spares.
UrbanAngel
It depends what type of strings you want!

Around €8-€10 iirc for metal string of that famous brand I've forgotten from the music shop on Sonnenstr. You can replace the strings individually.
Keydeck
See here for a list of prices from Lindberg (the shop UA mentioned).

...and if you go to Lindberg, don't forget to ask for an Andi Dick *chortle*

Personally, I'd go to Musik Eck on Corneliusstr. because they are the cheapest and the nicest. Big shops have to charge more to cover the rent and the posers doing the selling.

My son is a novice acoustic guitarist who wants an electric guitar for Chrismas. He plays e guitars at school with his mates, and already has ideas about what he wants.

I know that some shops sell starter kits, you know, guitar with a little amplifier plus a couple of extras like a strap etc. Obviously, the gear is only going to be basic, but there is no point buying swept up kit until I know that he will stick with it. The alternative is to buy the bits separately. That will cost more, but there might be a larger choice of guitars.

Being basically clueless, and suspecting that my son will probably be content with anything that is the right colour(!), are there any music shops that can give me advice in English? My German is improving, but the specialist guitar lingo will lose me in English, let alone German.

I think that I want an inexpensive but solid guitar that is good for a beginner, but what should I expect to pay for such an item. I found the music shop near Karlsplatz and their basic models (from a company called Ibanez) start from €249. Are they going to be OK at that price?

Please PM me if anybody has got advice.
Sin
Hi nickjbutt,

Yep. I think they all speaka da English. My advice is to trawl the Thomann website. These are the cheapest prices you will get anywhere for new gear (believe me, I've done all this many times before). When you know what you want, go down to Musik Eck on Corneliusstrasse and ask for Thomas, Matsa or Eric. Tell them what you want, and ask them if they'll match Thomann prices. Chances are that they won't have what you want in stock at that time, but unless it is something exotic, it'll be there within a week. Then your kid can try out the merchandise without even committing to a purchase. I'm pretty sure no other music shop in Munich will do this for you, and if you care to waste your time playing with the sharks Music Shop at OEZ, or Lindberg, you only have to look at their facilities and staff to realise that somebody has to pay for all that... and you can guess who it's gonna be.

Good luck.
GreenTea
Are MusikEck good for acoustic guitars too? I'm toying with the idea of getting a Western guitar (only played classical guitar up to now).

As a beginner I love the guitars in the music shop in OEZ but find the people there totally in love with themselves and unfriendly.

I got a lovely classical guitar there last year, which is now the envy of my guitar-playing friends. It's from a Spanish luthier, Antonio Valderas. "Music Shop" sell a lot of their guitars. I know what you mean about the people being in love with themselves though. First time I went there was on a Saturday afternoon around 3pm, and the guy in the acoustic guitar section was really pissed off that I had got there so late because they were closing at 4, and he would need at least two hours to go through his full sales repertoire telling the history of every guitar and which one I should buy and why. Another time I was there around midday and that was wrong again, because I had just come at the busiest time of his day and if only I could have been there an hour earlier bla bla bla. Worth a visit though if you can ignore their attitude. They're not actually in the OEZ, by the way, but across the road at Hanauer Str. 91a, and set back a bit behind some other buildings.

Lindberg on Sonnenstrasse - well maybe I was just unlucky, but I was in there a couple of times and both times the service was unfriendly and unhelpful.

BTW, anyone know what happened to Hieber, the musical instruments store facing the cathedral, that's been there since time immemorial? I was strolling past there the other day, and ... it's gone. Vanished without a trace. Hirmer menswear store has moved in where it used to be. Have they gone out of business, or just moved to new premises?

Yep. Anything that Thomann can provide, Musik Eck can supply. The only thing they don't do is drums. You don't really want drummers coming into a nice music shop and dribbling on the produce, trying to eat the guitars and pissing in the corners. Thomas can be a bit odd at times. But Matsa and Eric are diamond geezers... and real musos to boot. Tell 'em Sin sent you (and no, I don't get anything... no wait, Sin Jnr. was given a free harmonica once).

Sounds just like Roland. I usually only pop in there to piss them off by playing nearly every bass/amp/speaker combination and then leaving without having spent a cent. Once me and Filth went with Filth Jnr. We made sure Jnr. had got sufficient stickyness from an ice lolly all over his fingers and then led him to the biggest mixing desk they have. Oh! The fun at watchin' the staff in panic. I still haven't forgiven the bastards Music Shop for ripping me off over my Ampeg SVTII service. "Can you give me a quote?" asks muggins in all innocence. "Sure" says the Music Shop service guy with a wry smile. Two weeks later they call me and say that not only have they done the service, but it cost Euro 580,- and if I don't pay and pick up my amp within the next 2 weeks, then they'll sell it. I don't like being ripped off, and this is one of many channels I have to warn people of what thse sharks are like. They prey on young innocent wanna-be rock stars... and rip the gelt straight out of the poor little mite's hands. Is that any way to treat budding musos? I thunk not.

Eat?? ph34r.gif Hmm, yes, I did know a rather weird drummer guy once though.

Yes, that's the guy - Roland. Oh, and he'll ask you how much you want to spend, you name a price, say 500 Euros, and he'll say "Well, if you're prepared to spend just a little bit more, I have just the thing for you here, a real beauty, only 650 Euros". Beware!
nickjbutt
Many thanks to Sin.

The Thomann website looks interesting, but I'm not a guitar expert and so I can only fall back on the old theory that you get what you pay for. Anybody who can give me a rough idea of how the guitar makes rank would make me happy. I have seen deals with Squier, Ibanez and Harley Benton on Thoman. The hot deals are particularly promising. Nearly bought the Yamaha package from Lidl earlier in the year, at least I've heard of Yamaha and I sort of trust the brand, if you know what I mean.

But once you get into single coil pickups etc then you might as well talk Martian to me. Will the music pros in the shops in town be kind to me, or just look down their noses in that German way?

Matsa and Eric at Musik Eck will be your men. Just ask Kebab Meister (he bought an acoustic through them). Lindberg and especially the Music Shop at OEZ will defo look down their noses and then rip you off.

If it has more than 4 strings or is acoustic I have no idea anymore as to what is good and what isn't.

I'm probably joining this forum a bit late in the day, but...I was getting frustrated paying NZ retail prices for strings et al so did some researching on the net. I found a company called Elderly Instruments in USA who do a lot of business on the internet. I found there prices to be VERY competitive compared to what I was used to paying, so registered with them and ordered half a dozen packs of strings (plus a few extra singles of the ones I'm inclined to break). They arrived within seven days, all nicely packed, and with a small catalogue...the price, including p&p, amounted to about 60% of what they would have cost me from a shop in Auckland. Have ordered heaps of stuff from them over the past few years and the service/price/assistance has been excellent. Goods with a value of $500 or less (approx.) entering NZ don't normally attract GST, which makes this a very economical proposition. Not sure how this works in Germany, but might be worth checking out...

www.elderly.com

Tight strings!
Scogs
I know this might sound silly but Conrad the electronic shop has a fairly good range of guitar strings Bass, Electric and Classical and they are dirt cheap...about 9 Euro for bass Set 6 for a 12 string set!...I wouldn't play live at the oly hall with them but for messing around at home they are fine, for other stuff try Manhattan music they speak English and have a good range of used guitars at pretty good prices
Apteryx
That sounds pretty good then, Scogs...but Elderly also carry a massive inventory of parts and accessories, as well as instruments. It's worth just going and having a browse...
nickjbutt
Just placed an order with Thomann. Boy is their service good. Website is well set out, and order tracking and feedback is second to none. Can't wait for the order to pitch up.
Keydeck
Hit in Laim have an offer on guitars at the moment. Classical for €39.99 and an electric pack for €99 are available. They'd probably be fine for a beginner. I just bought two stands for €7.99 each and they do the job just nicely.

Wasn't bothered to check if the other stores have the same offer.
