I was wondering if someone could direct me to a guitar shop around Munich. I was hoping for something like Guitar Center in Hollywood, CA where they carry hundreds of guitars from a wide mix of companies, but I doubt I will find that!

I am hoping that I can find someone who stocks BC Rich, Jackson, ESP, Schecter, and maybe Steinberger.

Or, has anyone ordered from US based places like http://www.musiciansfriend.com/ online and had shipment to Germany? I would much rather play them first, but...

Directions from Gauting, (S6 stop), would be greatly appreciated.

There is a large music shop in town on Sonnenstr between Karlsplatz and Sendlinger Tor. I don't know the name or address, but if you walk from one stop to the other along the tram lines, you will not miss it.

I dunno about particular guitars, but I know they have plenty there upstairs.

Wotcha BadlandZ,

I'm sure we've covered all this before, so I feel a merge coming on. But, there are two kinds of guitar shop: 1) the one with the massive display area, staff that think they are the next best thing, a zillion axes nailed to the wall and the huge car park, and 2) the little back street dive with real friendly muso-staff, but not a lot of stock.

I'll always plump for No.2 because 1) they're not charging you extra to pay for the massive display area, arrogant staff, the zillion unsold axes and the car park, and 2) you're more likely to get Thomann prices (the lowest yer gonna get in Yur'p).

Personally, I'd look up what you want at www.thomann.de and then call www.musik-eck.de and ask if they'll match Thomann's price. Then they'll get the article in and you can go try it out for size without handin' over the readies.

Musik-Eck has another advantage; they don't do drums. So you're safe in the knowledge that a drummer isn't going to eat yer strings, piss in yer pocket, or start humpin' the speakers. Know what I mean? wink.gif

There is a music shop and I saw guitars in. It's on Rosenheimerstrasse. I'm not sure of the number but it's about 80. S-Bahn Rosenheimerplatz and then you go at the opposite of Gastgeig.
Hope it will help...

Are you good friends or do you have some kind of a sponsorship deal with Musick Eck? This is not the first time that you have promoted that store and I could not help but notice that picture of you on their website in full bowler hat and baggy sweatpants regalia...

The Music Store in the Olympia Einkaufszentrum definitely stocks BC Rich and other metalhead/shredder guitars. Just saw a classic Warlock there recently, if that's what cranks yer whammy. You can get there with the U1 & the U3. It's not directly in the OEZ, rather across the road next to the McDonalds.

@JW,

Truth is stranger than fiction, mate. Truth is, the girl who does the website for Musik-Eck is an old friend of Mme Sin. One day she phones up and asks if she can steal and modify a pic from the JulieFilth&Sin website (that she was also in charge of). I don't care, so I said, Yes. I'm not even sure that the guys at Musik-Eck know it's me.

As far as promoting Musik-Eck. Nope, I don't get any special preferentials. However, I freely admit that IMHO these are the nicest, down-to-Earth guys in the retail equipment business here in Munich. Notwithstanding, they are all musos, so they're on the same wavelength, and one of the guys that works down there (Eric - Munich's answer to Don Letts) did mix for JFS on occasion, and a bloody good job he did too.

So, why do I like them and why do I recommend them? Put it this way, I took my Ampeg SVTII bass amp to an unmentionable music shop for an estimate on a tube change and a service. The sharks decided to do the job anyway without sending an estimate, then informed me I owed them €580,- and that if I didn't collect the equipment and pay up in 14 days, that they'd keep it and put it into their secondhand stock. Nice, don't you think? I went down and talked about a second service a year later to Matsa at Music-Eck, and he was a total gent and just gave me the number of Munich's tubeguru, thus cutting out the middleman. That act of kindness is worth recommendation alone.

Satisfied now, or do you fancy wasting my time and pissing me off some more?

I was just being cheeky, actually I love your bowler hat and sweat pants.

What made it a classic? Was it like 70's or 80's? What color was it?

I guess I've never been a big fan of the "metalhead" and "shredder" labels, but yea, that's what I'm looking for. I have a few guitars in the US, but I'm hoping to get a bit more specific and some more high end stuff. Maybe sell what I have there, get something nice here? Specifically, I was hoping for a good selection of neck through Mockingbirds. And among the BC Rich Mockingbirds, I was hoping to find a good choice of Vintage '80's, Handmades, and the new the Mockingbird ST.

I have a late model (05-06) Mockingbird NJ at home in the US, and was thinking of getting one here rather than trying to ship mine here. I know one thing, I want Trans Red this time! I'm not sure what it'd be like to play (bends, squeels) but the new Rich Bich "Perfect Ten" looks sweet. That is one I would HAVE to play first though, no way to know if I'd like it.

The Rich Website doesn't say anything about dealers outside of the USA. They seem HUGE in Japan (how cliche), but I can't find a big dealer in Munich area, or Europe for that matter. I know in the US on the west coast, I'd say drive a few hours to Ed Romans in Vegas or Guitar Center in Hollywood, but most medium size towns have at least half a dozen Mockingbirds floating around the shops. I'm wondering if I should wait till I go back on vacation? But then I have customs hassles, taxes, etc...

These boys in Aschaffenburg do 'em

Sin sunshine, yer a facking gem. Good tip.

Sweet collection there alright.

Classic black Warlock, the standard late 80s, early 90s Death Metal/Thrash guitar, the one that Chuck Schuldiner, Mille Petrozza, James Murphy, Max Cavalera and that guy from Slipknot played/play. If memory serves me, it was an NT, black glossy finish, 2 humbuckers and a Floyd Rose - mad looking guitar. I don't think they have vintage models there and it's the only place in Munich I've seen BCRs and this one was brand new, presumably a 2006. They were in the guitar section slightly left of the centre of the room. I don't remember ever seeing a Charvel in Germany, in any of the guitar shops I've been to in Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart & Köln.
They'll more than likely be able to order in for you. And everything everybody else said about the staff in The Music Store is true: unfriendly b'star's.
There was a music store up around Pariserstrasse somewhere, was only in it once, like a walk-in 2ndhand guitar depot, had some sweet stuff - you might strike it lucky there. Maybe somebody else knows if its still open and the exact address.

There's also the Frankurter Musikmesse coming up - I've never seen anything like it, guitar heaven, first and last time I got my hands on a Taylor.

*()@!*@()!!! I went all the way to OEZ today, and the thing I wanted to find most was this guitar shop. I walked around and around (in the building) and didn't see it. I was really bummed, thought it was closed up or something because I saw a few stores were whited out on the directory.

Got home... and re-read what you wrote, "rather across the road next to the McDonalds." Damn, I need a printer to print out notes and maps before I leave the house here! #*(@@! I guess all is not lost, at least I finally saw Microwave Popcorn somewhere...

I just went with a few colleagues to check out this music shop in Freising:

Jahu Musik
Bahnhofstr. 11
85354 Freising
Tel.: 08161/3184
www.jahu-musik.de

Located not far from the S-Bahn. Nice little shop - not big, but the owner was very friendly, even after one of my companions accidentally smashed a light bulb through incautious guitar-wielding. So now I've bought my first steel-string guitar. Price tag said EUR 149, but the guy knocked EUR 30 off due to a not-so-pretty scratch on the soundboard. Oh, and the guy also speaks good English.

The website also includes links & info about the local music scene, bands and music clubs.

hi folks, just wondering if any of the TTer's know of any good music instrument shops in the city or even some that specialise in guitars, somewhere you're likely to get a good deal or unearth a good bargain. Im willing to spend €700 - €1000 on semi - acoustic with a decent built in pick up, maybe a Tanglewood, Takamine or a cheaper Martin if possible. Ang suggestions of where to go welcome. Cheers!

Which city, Dublin or Munich?
Jules Winnfield
You don't need to spend that much to get a good one, imho. Check out the Takamine EG523 as an example.
gary007
Lindberg in Sonnen Strasse is the biggest one.. Lots of guys winge about them on this board but they certainly have the largest selection to try. I was in there the other night and they had some lovely Takamine's.. , which I find the better electro accoustic guitars.. (There was a lovely one there for I thought 685 Euros..)

That said, I have a Guld D50 which is also ok when plugged in but I find better when I play it into a mike... I guess its all down to taste.. I also personally like to buy second hand guitars as I find they need to be a few years old before they develope their true tone.. But like I said, its all down to taste...

If you play, you should come to the Shamrock on a monday evening.. There's an Irish session there, but all are welcome..Had a great jam there last week.. Ended up playing all kinds of music..

Good luck,

Gary

Anyone know a good place to get a steel string guitar restrung and serviced. The plastic pegs (near hole in sound box) have broken inside when I tried to remove them to replace the strings. The holes probably need drilling out. I would attempt it myself but I already done enough damage.
Sin
You could try Thomas (forgotten his surname) in Valleystr. Sendling. His workshop is just by the Südbad, and he does all kinds of guitar repairs.

There's also "Stevens Custom Guitars and Munich Repair Shop". They were mentioned earlier in this thread, but they are now no longer located in Breisacher Str. They moved quite recently to new premises at Franziskanerstr. 49 (corner of Franziskaner and Gebsattelstr.). Their web site gives a detailed price list for repairs.

Hey, just wanted to put in a good word for Manhattan Music. They gave me a great deal on a new bass cab on the weekend and bought my old busted one as well! I find the staff there great. By the way, it's worth going by just to check out the "fridge", literally an ampeg svt 810 with a refridgerator built inside it!
good store, good service, easy to get to.

Hey Everyone,

I am living in Gauting, just a 15 minute ride on the S-Bahn to MarienPlatz. Is there anyone who is looking to sell an old acoustic guitar or rent it to me? I am living here playing baseball for the Gauting Indians until October and have been a month without one! Before I go purchase one, hopefully someone has something that might be able to help me out with. Thanks everyone!

Matt

You could always drop us here at JMS Music a line, we are the English owned Music Shop in Oberbayern :-)

Hi.

I just settled into Munich and am looking to get an acoustic bass to rock out with my friends at the Marienplatz to augment my school prescribed stipend while I am studying here. Does anyone at Toytown know where I could find a music shop that would sell used or new acoustic basses, or rent them out at decent prices? I've been unable to locate any online and would appreciate anyones help!

Did you search first? If not, here is a thread which lists guitar shops in Munich - new and second hand.
Bron
There was a thread on renting a violin somewhere.

I assume that you know about getting a busking permit etc.?

Edit: weird, I just can't find the thread. Anyway, a google search on "geigenbau" and "München" will get you quite a few luthiers many of whom rent out instruments.
TheDreadPirateRock
anyone know about the availability of acoustic basses in these music shops? I stopped by the music center by OEZ, but like many of you found no help. They told me they knew of no other music store in Munich and that no place, apparently in Germany, does rentals. Any of you notice nice acoustic bass prices or stores willing to rent as you've lounged around these other shops?
Keydeck
I'm fairly sure I've seen acoustic basses in Lindberg. Have a looksee on their website.

Yup, here they are.

Dunno about renting though.
crusoe
Ask them. I had to hire a particular make of keyboard recently and Lindberg was very helpful and reasonably priced, but I had to call and ask - no website info.
