Where is the best place to watch UK sports on TV in the Frankfurt area? I'm recently arrived in Offenbach, and have so far tried the Fox and Hound and O'Reilly's, but are there any places to recommend?
Tatter
Hi NTN,

Wife and I live in Offenbach Bieber - 15 min walk from the Kickers stadium. We've been here nearly 6 years and haven't found ANYWHERE in Offenbach that shows live UK sports. Best bet is MacGowans, Zeil 10, Frankfurt - get out of the S-bahn at Konstablerwache. Ask for Paddy. If he's sober, he'll sort you out. If not, the other staff are normally more than willing to oblige.

If you fancy a beer at any time, let us know. Only too pleased to drink a scoop or two with an Insel Affe! Plenty of good places in Offenbach.

P.S.
Which footy team do u follow? wink.gif

Thanks, Tatter, for that. I'm afraid I'm one of the Abramovich Chelsea billionnaires (life-long, third generation, born within a mile of Stamford Bridge) - but my God success was a long time coming. I'll give McGowans a go tomorrow for the Arsenal game.

BTW: Scoops are my hobby! I've discovered a fantastic brew called 'Dunkles Starkbier' in the 'Trinkhalle' round the corner. 7.5%. Nearly makes up for the lack of real ale.

Was in the Bogside last night for a while. Hmmm.

In the Trinkhalle round the corner...it only goes downhill from there. Try ein Helles hefeweizen 4.8% ish for swilling. Glaabsbraeu from Seligenstadt do a good range of beer too - try the 1744 for a mild, hoppy taste. Must admit I'm also a real ale fan. From the midlands so have been brought up on Enville ale, Holdens and the like. Do like a good pint of London Pride though, but not at London prices.

Good to hear of a Chelsea fan from Chelsea. Don't worry about being a fan of the club next door - even if it is Chelsea - it's the only club you should EVER support, no matter what. I should know, I'm a Wolves fan...

Bogside used to be good. Played live Irish music thursday nights until it was taken over about 2 years ago. Haven't been since. There is a really good place to eat not far from there called the "Weinstuebe". You have to look for it though as it's quite well disguised.

Have you tried Cabanas yet? That's not far from Bogside and plenty of fit young fillies.

Where in Offenbach are you?

I grew up in Nottingham and Leicestershire, so the Midlands is in my background too... (family left London early in my life, via what is now Zimbabwe), spent the last eight years in the frozen wastes of Norway, hence the Noggin screen name.

The first time my late Dad took me to a match was at Molineux. Wolves won 4-0, Chelsea were a disaster. How times change.

Moved here to be with a 'local' blonde I met in Italy last year.

We have an apartment in a very salubrious district, just around the corner from the Ledermuseum S-Bahn station! When I say Trinkhalle, I mean the big shop that sells cheap booze on Berlinerstraße, next door to a very nice Asian shop that sells excellent things food-wise. Ly-Ly I think it's called.

The Bogside is a bit naff I agree, but at least it pretends to be a pub!

It was funny you mentioned Kickers, I went to see them play Bayern Munich there in 1971 when I was staying in Hanau on a school exchange visit! Beckenbauer, Roth, Müller, Maier, they were all playing.

I believe the OF team is doing OK at the moment - second division?

Do you follow cricket? If so, what an Ashes series it is! I'm listening avidly on BBC. Thank the Lord for the internet.
Tatter
Wolves 4 - Chelsea 0. Bl**dy hell that was a long time ago...oh to have those days back again. We'll wait and see. If Abramovic has a spare billion or two he could always buy the wolves as a sideline.

Yes I do follow cricket. Used to play for the village team. Not brilliant at it but it's a laugh - the reason I play / watch most sports. Can't stand athletics though - what is the point???

Bogside does its best. Macgowans does it better although still haven't found a typical English pub out here - not that I'm looking for one either. Germany has plenty of its own to offer.

I go to the Kickers when I can. Went to the Koeln game yesterday. Excellent atmosphere - 15500 crowd and the right result. Where were they all last season and the ones before when OFC were wallowing in the depths of the Regionalliga Sued? I've been there more than once when 4000 were all they were getting. Still, success brings the punters in as always.

Hope the game was good in MacGowans - assuming you read this when you get back - and that the result went the right way. A German mate of mine is an Arsenal fan and may well be there today. We go to the Kickers together. He is football mad. Spends more time in the UK than I do.

Sounds like you know your way around the Vaterland. How's the German? Mine was nul 6 years ago but can get by more or less now. I find the locals generally quite helpful and understanding.

Are you working out here? Should try and meet up for a pint at some point. Always good to chew the fat with someone from home.

The 4-0 was about 1960, I think. Old git that I am! Today's result was rather more satisfying, if a little fortuitous. I would be fairly peed off were I an Arsenal fan. But, as dear Arséne Whinger would undoubtedly say, 'C'est la vie, Henri'. If he were the victorious manager.

Anyway, MacGowans was OK-ish, and I see what you mean about the 'if' regarding Paddy's sobriety! Yesterday's mee goreng remnants duly consumed (although I fear K's Teutonic tastebuds are still a mite sensitive to spicy fare), I'm now happily pirating software, swilling beer and listening to a wonderful Aussie band called DIG.

Regarding a pint: I'm always up for that! Name time and place! Any day this week except Wednesday. The Cabanas and the fillies sounds like a pleasant combination...

Hi Stuart,

Looks like there's a meet up tonight. Lots of GKN graduate trainees meeting at the Weinstuebe Taunusstr. 19 Offenbach. about 19:30. Chance to meet some more Brits, Yanks, a Brazilian and one or two others. If you fancy.

This is the place I mentioned in my previous message. Weinstuebe is quite easy to miss. Look out for the beer sign and the fairy lights strung along the wall.

Cheers

Pete

Edit. on Tatters request. Mickey

Hi Pete - thanks for that. I'll certainly wander along a bit later, probably around 7.45 or so. Will be fun!
Noggin the Nog
OK, found the place a bit later than expected (some old bat gave me wrong directions!), but I guess I was a bit late, you guys must have moved on. So it goes.

Another opportunity will no doubt present itself!
Tatter
Hi,

We were there 'til about midnight - outside in the garden. We did keep an eye out and approached several characters with the line " are you Stuart " to be told nein! Like you say, shame we missed each other but there will be plenty more opportunities and hopefully at weekends. Work was tough tuesday...

At least the Wolves won last night.
