German sun lounger issue settled

Germans are not legally able to reserve sun loungers using beach towels, a German lawyer has revealed.

Ralf Hoecker said extensive research had revealed there was nothing in either German or Spanish law that stopped other tourists removing towels.

His research is included in a book entitled the New Dictionary of Popular Legal Errors, published last week.

Mr Hoecker said most Germans were blissfully unaware of the English stereotype of them hogging loungers.

"Nobody knows this in Germany, that it is a stereotype. It is the same with the football rivalry," Mr Hoecker said.

Mr Hoecker has only researched German and Spanish law, the two places where British holidaymakers are most likely to encounter their Teutonic counterparts.

And tourists are warned not to become too militant.

Germans may have hired the sun loungers, and whatever the situation it is illegal to damage their towels.

But in normal circumstances, British tourists can simply remove the towels and sit down, the lawyer from Cologne asserted.

Mr Hoecker's last dictionary proved extremely popular, remaining on the German bestseller list for a number of weeks.

Reminds me of a story my boyfriend told me of when he went on holiday once with his university friends. They booked last minute so had to stay in a family resort. Being crazy and Swiss, they would religiously swap the towels over on the sun loungers when they got back from the discos at 5am. Apparently the ensuing outrage was something to behold... And of course, being a Swiss/German contingent, no-one suspected that they were the towel swappers.

My Dad told me that on his last visit to Spain he would remove all the towels from the loungers while everyone was at breakfast, then watch the ensuing drama while enjoying his morning tipple at the bar laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Hannah I couldn't agree more on that front! Just remember not all Brits are like that tongue.gif Some of us are a little more civilised!

Well wherever I have been on holiday over the last few years I have found the Brits have been leaving their towels just as much as the Germans . It really annoys me they leave them there when they go off for excursions all morning. It is unfair on the people like me who really want to lie in the sun with a book all day mad.gif
Hannah
I live with a Brit, Muffin. I just can't help using the same stereotypes about Brits if I read the ones about Germans here ph34r.gif
If all this stereotypes would fit on my boyfriend, I would for sure NOT live with him biggrin.gif

I know I would feel the same. Actually though I think a lot more of the stereotypes of Brits are true to life than those of the Germans. Lets face it the Brits really are a nation of excessive boozers and like you said vomiting in the street is not uncommon in the slightest!

If he has a glatze, then he should wear a hat in the sunshine. seriously.
Purple Muffin
I always wear a hat in the sun.

I got sunburnt on my head once and have been very careful ever since! I couldn't brush my hair for 2 days not that it makes much of a difference I guess tongue.gif
Hannah
I know about the hat and he does it mostly. His face tans a bit though and it looks weird if the upper head is all white, so I tell him to leave the cap off sometimes :$ biggrin.gif

There was a different Add, Ther is a good looking british guy standing on the balcony of his hotel room, and three fat ugly germans are running to get to the sunbeds first. The brit thros his towel and it bounces on the water of the pool befor unrolling on a sunbed revealing a can of carling...

That one ...
