Hi,

Anyone have much experience with water pumps here?

I am looking at something like this to get water from an undergound water tank to water the garden, and wanted a few tips, like "what is that small tank for underneath some, but not all pumps, and do I really need it"

Thanks,
Neil

I use a Gardena Wasserpumpe to pump water from the water table to water my garden/wash car etc. We use to have a similier designed pump to the ones your link connects to but mine and my neighbours pump both broke of similier defects. The pressure tank (large tank that it sits on) split at the flange weld, the weld was weakend by rust!

The Gardenia Wasserpumpe was recommended because it has a built in fine sand filter and its made of non rusting hard plastic composites. We've had this pump outside in the garage now for 7 years and its not been a problem. In winter I wrapped the pump in blankets to protect it from the cold.

Yep I can defo recommend the Gardena product wink.gif

They seem awfully expensive. Although, I haven't looked at pump prices for a while but I would have thought you'd would be able to get a good one around €100.00-€150. Maybe the price depends on how much pressure they have? We only have to get our water from 3 meters deep amd it was well under €100s. We've got one with a stainless steel housing without the big tank. In Winter we drain it so it won't freeze. I think the tank thing is a good idea as with our simple pump you have to switch it on at the pump. Our neighbour has a better one where they have a proper tap connected to it on an outside wall and when you turn the tap on the pump comes on and when you turn it off the pump goes off.

We use three similar to Gardena to pump water from a stream and from tanks. Just a basic small pump that is easy to carry and hang with a rope in the tank. We used them to pump out our flooded cellar as well.

Thanks for the replies guys (and girl!), the one thing I was wondering about was what does the pressure tank actually do?
I read a book on regenwasser nutzung and they basically said you don't need the extra pressure tank, and if you do have one it should be stainless steel, for the reasons mentioned by Slackmack.

I had another look in obi last night, there seems to be plenty to choose from, and I guess if I get a cheap one first, I can always get a better one later if it is not up to the job, as we dont have too much cash at the moment.

It may work out cheaper to use stadtwasser direct from the tap to water your garden for the rest of the summer instead of buying a cheap alternative that you know won't last long term, unless the tanks mentioned have to be pumped out that is.

we used to pump out the cellar alot aswell but since we got a "Rückschlagventil" it did't get flooded anymore yet. Ups OT :$

No problem, also an interesting subject!

I'm becoming confused here, what are we looking for? A Hauswasserwerk, a Gartenpumpe (suitable for watering the garden) or a Tauchpumpe (for pumping water out of the cellar)?

If you want to I can give you some prices and examples, if you know what you are looking for and in what price range. I deal with the DIY Stores on a daily basis as part of my job.

Hi Archie,

I was originally looking for a suitable pump to use to water the garden using water from a large underground water tank.
So my question was really which sort of pump would be suitable for that application.

I have since done a bit of independant reading/searching and found that a hauswasserwerk consisting of a simple pump and a flow control switch will do the job.

Thanks a lot for your kind offer of help though, and thanks to everyone else for the input too!
I will probably be starting a thread later with "What sort of pump do I need in the cellar to get water out of the "Pumpensumpf""!

Cheers

I know nothing of pumps etc but have had contact with a firm dealing with them as I worked on the backend of their website (doing some database interaction). The company is Intewa. Don't know if they deal with individuals or just companies but you may find some useful background information there.

Hi Kobold, looks like there is some interesting stuff there thanks!
