Keydeck
Word on the street is that Schuh Seibel just 100m to the south of Viktualienmarkt is the place to go. Biggest range in Munich or somat like that.

Try Felzmann Bequem-Schuh, at Petersplatz, around the side of Hugendubel at Marienplatz. Siebel has loads too and is in the Reichenbachstr. (I forgot where it was but had Gelbe Seiten open to check the name of Felzmann).
This is a specialist place and you may well find a bargain in Kaufhof (where I got my two-strap black patent leather ones for 25€).
Happy Shopping

PS Yes I know that this makes me even more German than you all thought already. tongue.gif

Awesome! Thanks!

Is it me or is it just US west coast hippies and webdesigners that wear these?

Dont get me wrong- Im not passing judgement- but are they fashionable (yet) again?
Elfenstar
i don't know about fasionable, but they are damn comfortable. i admit, while living in oregon i would wear my birkenstock's for my 8 hours shift at the uni bookstore and never had any foot pain.

also, the brand "papillo" are from the maker's of birkenstock's too, but cheaper.
MommyinDE
tretter is a good shop. also salamander. in america there are stores that only carry birkenstocks so the selection is huge. unfortunately, here the selection is crap.
astroboy
Bizarre thread. Hands up all those who knew Birkenstocks were invented and made in Germany?
They've been popular here since the 1900's, a bit before the hippies and web designers caught on to them.

(PS, sorry, can't help with shop search, we just buy them in normal shoe shops, although you have to go to several if you want to see the whole range)

Hi, I got an email from my sister asking me if Birkenstock sandals are cheaper in Munich than in London, seeing as they are made in Germany.
So, seeing as I wouldn't know Birkenstock sandals if they came up and bit me on the arse, do any of the people here that are more familiar with shoes have an answer for me?
Thanks for any help.
Katrina
Yes - especially in Kaufhof's sale if she wants a relatively basic/standard model.
Birkenstock.de to see their recommended prices
Birkenstock.co.uk
The recommended prices are similar *but* the likelihood of getting a deal here is higher - certainly try the large department stores during their sales.
I have a pair in black patent (Arizona style) and they cut the tops of my feet to shreds so comfy they are not (I have soft feet). Only 25€ though (but that only means that I wasted 25€ instead of 50€ dry.gif ).
And TTM Search is your friend.

they are def cheaper here than in London. I paid about 30GBP for mine in London and you can pick them up for €27 -30 here standard prices in most shoe shops...
Elfenstar
i think it's quite funny that you have to pay nearly 10% more for having big feet.

p.s. i still got my "papillo" (also birkenstock), although admittedly the foot bed is all black and hard.

Not sure about London, but I found the Birkenstocks are cheaper in the US than in Munich. But the styles are limited.

Nope, seen about a thousand pairs in Austin today. Make that one thousand and one... wink.gif

It's weird. I dunno how people can wear sandals like those and flip-flops. I could never wear shoes that don't attach to my ankle - I would have to "think" about them not falling off all day long!

Nope, it isn't just you. My office (full of IT geeks) is full of them! They come into the office in 'normal' shoes and immediately put on their Birkies
Elfenstar
hey, i have one collegue who only wears socks! no shoes. even to the cafeteria for lunch he trots around in socks!

2 directors at my previous company got all suited and booted for some important prospective clients from the States, but of course slipped into their bloody birkenstock atrocities upon arriving at work. If anyone had turned up in a posh version of a hawaian shirt, they'd have been fired, but its seemingly acceptable to roll up in your expensive flip flops?

One of them even had white socks on with them.

In San Francisco I wouldn't be caught dead in a pair of Birkenstocks only because they are not cute. Since living here in Germany, I bought a pair and they are really comfortable. Still not so cute, but damn comfortable. Everyone here seems to own a pair, especially people in the medical field. Every medical office or hospital I go to all the doctors, nurses, and dentists wear them. So I guess comfort rules over cuteness.

If you tend to flat feet (falling arches) do not wear Birkenstocks as they do not support the arch of the foot enough.

Important note, hinted at by previous posters: Birkenstocks here are really considered "house shoes", and are not much worn outside home or the office. Hence, people not wearing them in the street, but changing into them at work.

There is a factory outlet for Birkenstock somewhere in Germany. Presumably cheaper than buying retail in Munich, should anyone be less lazy than me and want to research where that is.
Darkknight
If your looking for a really good deal, and a some info/sight seeing on how they are made, then take a trip to there factory.. The prices are much less than in any of the stores and you might learn something...
Axxo
I warmly suggest this webshop.
Good prices, Huge choice, fast shipping. wink.gif

I've noticed that too, but what other sandals do people wear outside? Or are all sandals reserved for home?
Katherine
Hello to all who seek Birkenstocks!

I have checked all stores mentioned on this thread, including the Kaufhof.

The store with the biggest selection for both men and women is the Euro Schule located near the Hauptbanhof. Their prices are the same as the deparment stores, and they have way more to choose from than any of the stores in the Marienplatz.

The store has many large birkenstock signs near it, and is very close to the strip of hostels (euro youth, jagers etc.) by hauptbanhof. It is on a corner on the main street near the amazing pizza place...you really can't miss it! And if they don't have your preferred style, they will order it for their weekly delivery.

Good luck! Katherine

See my last post... Going on a day trip to the factory will not only provides you with losts of info/fun, but you can also buy the shoes at a
BIG DISCOUNT, that you won't find ANYWHERE else...
Lupo
Also beware, there are Birkenstocks and there are Birkenstocks, the cheaper ones have fake leather.
Darkknight
@Lupo

Are you trying to say that the Birkenstock factory stores prices are lower because they make the shoes sold there was fake leather??? blink.gif
Lupo
no
