Official World Cup Song

Who should sing it?

Ami in Berlin
Every four years we're treated not only to the football world championship, but also to some second-tier pop star trying to launch and/or prolong his or her career by singing the official song.

In 2002 it was Anastasia (who, I believe, admitted to having never actually seen a football match), in 1998 it was Ricky Martin asking us if 'We really want it', in 1994 it was Hall & Oats (remember them) and in 1990 some Italian guy.

Of course, only two of these four examples featured home grown artists (and who would have wanted either Japanese/Korean or French songs?), but for the sake of argument, let's say a German does it for next year.

So, who should do the Official 2006 World Cup Song?

Stephan Raab seems the obvious candidate, or maybe his boyfriend Max whatever his name is.

Off the top of my head, can't think of any other German singers ...

Grönemeyer!

We can only hope that Dieter Bohlen has a hand in it.

I suppose Ramstien is out of the question.

Nina! We could have 99 red balls instead of balloons biggrin.gif

I'm not that up on German pop music but my flatmate listens to Juli constantly so I am guessing they are popular...

German pop music is about as dire as it gets. Take the worst American and British acts, and then make poor German imitations of them.

I thought it might be after watching Bundesvision biggrin.gif

There was some sort of hip hop group that were singing something quite catchy and were not too bad, but the highlight was definitly the head banging cellists biggrin.gif

What about Sido? laugh.gif He'd scare the pants off everyone "Mein Block" could be renamed to "Main Block". laugh.gif Doro Pesch? wink.gif Hmmm, who else? Xavier Naidoo (now I do like some of his earlier songs I must admit)
Please please though, not Alexander!! Arrrrrghhhh!! wacko.gif
The No Angels will probably regroup or something and call themselves the All Stars for the event... rolleyes.gif

Apocalyptica are not German, they're Finnish... Just hope they don't finish, because they are absolutely apocalyptically good.

And one of the best songs in 2005... "The sound of German hip hop" by Clem Snide:

QUOTE
"I woke up with the sound of German hip hop in my head/
A great unholy clatter quickly filling me with dread/
I wondered then if silence had forever disappeared/
With everybody yelling, the end was finally near..."
He is not that well known here, but well worth listening to!

A bit of a mouthful... There is more than the usual TOTP/MTV suspects, there are indeed some very good German bands about. Percentually, there is just as much crap about in the UK and USA pop scenes, some would say more...

But then, beauty is in the eye (or in this case ear) of the beholder, and we should not argue about matters of taste -- one man's meat...

This gets my vote biggrin.gif (I'd like to say to Yamyam at this point ... you bastard, you posted this link ages ago and now I can't get the effin thing outta my head wink.gif )

If the singer has to be German... Heino gets my vote... at least that way the Germans will hate the song as well laugh.gif

If Arnie doesn't get to her first ( ph34r.gif ), it'll probably be Sarah Connor.
Think about it! rolleyes.gif

Or they could just keep the costs down and recycle the song “Força by Nelly Furtado, because they didn't really use it last time, even though it was the official song for UEFA EURO 2004.

If they really want it in German, anything from "Musikantenscheune" would probably be just as good ph34r.gif
maekelborger
kraftwerk

they've already done songs/albums for sporting events (tour de france) and big events in germany (expo 2000)...

somehow I can't quite see them doing a football song though!
Ami in Berlin
My money is on Jeanette Biederman, although I think Sara Conner is a good outside bet. Either way, the world will be treated to the, um, best the German music industry has to offer.

The official football song for 2006 is "You´ll Never walk Alone" by Gerry Marsdon. This is why you will hear it played before every Bundisliga match next season.

Sound like the crawlers aren't generating enough links to the site

Maybe your WC song is so full of what goes in your average WC, that even the web-crawlers have noticed. ph34r.gif
