Hiya all.
My mum died recently and left me her house. She lived in Liverpool and I have been in Munich since 1980. Does anyone have any idea or any links to anyone who has any idea what I have to do now...I have heard something about ex pat inheritance tax matters but at the moment I am severely under-informed!
Any suggestions gratefully accepted!

did you get anywhere with the fry group
I have same situation and was thinking of approaching one of the intl tax advisors mention in the Brit embassy website links but guess that will cost.

with uk house prices so high technically the trap for inheritance tax in uk wud apply
but as resident abroad we shud be able avoid that. then comes question how wud the German tax people rate it because the system on house valuation is completely different.

A german friend inherited a property in Germany. The German tax people weren't really interested as it was valued as being under the limit for what you can inherit tax free. (Actually, she valued it as I recall not done by official valuation) On the other hand if you inherit a property and then it is sold - the same logic would prevail. If the money obtained from the sale of the house was under the limit you could bring in that money tax free. The solicitor acting on your behalf would have to write a letter that was internationally acceptable explaining the circumstances of your inheritance.

There is quite a reasonable threshold for tax free inheritance but I can't remember what it is. Must be well over €100K, might be €150K but I don't know. Perhaps someone else does.

I have not got any experience in this area myself but when I was helping a friend who is the middle of selling her house before going to the States I came across this publication which may be useful

Expatriate Tax Guide - it's from Lloyds (pdf) but I guess most banks will have a similar publication

I think I may have an article on this somewhere... I'll have a look. Might be worth having a look on the Inland Revenue site as well.

knew I had read something somewhere, there is a short article in Shoreline on IHT. It is in the November issue, page 9 of the pdf file.

Looks like I read more of the bumf the bank sends me than I thought I did...
