Hello from the Krefeld Area. Me (German) & my Scottish Hubbie have been to the British Fair, too, I love this event and try to be there every year.

I have to mention I was very disapointed about the fish & chips stand this year. After almost 45 minutes waiting I noticed (totally shocked!! blink.gif that the fish & chips man fried GERMAN "LIDL-SHOP" CHIPS instead of proper English chips and we didn't even get any Tatar sauce at all - like we always got in the last years. Just normal mayonnaise...uuuuh! mad.gif

I said next year I'll try out the Chinese next door ...

Hope you don't mind my terrible English! My husband is too lazy to write here so I have to do it wink.gif
Vloid
Lony - are you kidding - your English is perfect - are you sure you're German??? You must have at least lived in the UK for a few years, as the way you use the language is fluent?

Just 1 spelling mistake - missing out a "p" in disappointed. But have you seen the spelling on most of our posts? Especially when we've had a few. Bye the way (good Scottish phrase that for your Hubbie, except usually goes at the end of a sentence, by the way), since being in Germany I have been personally embarrassed by the fact that many Germans seem to have a much better understanding of the technical parts of speech of English than most of us Brits. Probably comes from the way you are taught German formally, rather than us picking up English from scratch, & the way we are then taught it (or not) at school.

At the recent Britboard meetup in Köln we all had fish'n chips at an Irish Bar. In this case the fish was not proper fish cooked in batter, but more sort of soggily cooked in breadcrumbs - not even approaching the "Special" fish supper Hubbie might know.

PS - what so bad about Lidl - my daughter has just moved back to the UK (Edinburgh) & is waxing lyrical about her local Lidl - even finding the brand of apple juice she used to drink in Germany. She has become a true student in 1 week, delighting in saving a few pence by giving the local Tesco Metro a bodyswerve & using the Lidl instead biggrin.gif
Lony
Hello Vloid,

oh no I like shopping at LIDL a lot!! smile.gif I make LIDL chips myself at home... wink.gif It was just that I was looking so much forward to "Mr. Fish & Chips" at the Burg Linn, because the food was really yummy in the last years and they had these proper thick English Chips and that wonderful Tartar Sauce wub.gif and THAT was worth it standing for 45 Minutes in a queue, but not this time... but hey, we had a good time, the "British Days" are one of my favourite events every year. I just like the atmosphere there.

Hmm... I sometimes think my English is not good, because here at home I don't speak very much English. My husband says something in English to me and I usually reply in German (we decided this so that his German will improve).

I think, I know a lot of the words but sometimes I think my sentences make no sense or I try to say something and people understand it in a wrong sense...

I really like this board, it's a great idea!!! I will surf around a bit to read some more of the older threads! Lot's of greetings everybody and have a nice Sunday!!
bbulldog
from me too, welcome to the board. Pity we didnt know you were there otherwise you could have joined us for a drink. Yes the Chips van was disappointing, we waited for about an hour, but was better than nothing, Veela actually did go to the chinese next door biggrin.gif So we should see you around the board then, correcting our spelling mistakes... smile.gif
