Bus From Munich to Salzburg Airport

Where does it leave from..

I have read that British Airways runs a bus from [more like mini-van] from Munich to Salzburg airport direct that takes only 50 minutes to an hour..

I prefer to do this to the train which I hear is about a two hour journey.

Would anyone know how much the bus costs and where it leaves from in Munich?

Thanks,
Vanessa

Couldn't find any info about the bus in question, but I do know that the A8 Munich - Salzburg is one of the most traffic jam prone (and accidents) autobahnen in Germany. Read an article last week on this very theme entitled "Dauerstau auf der A8". I would stick with the train personally.

It's 160 km to Salzburg from Munich , which means that the bus would have to be doing an AVERAGE speed of 192km/h to make it in that time - unless it's using old concorde engines I very much doubt that such a thing is consistently possible.

If it is tho , let us kno pls.

IIRC, the bus only runs to connect with BA flights so unlikely to be very frequent and I doulbt they really want non-airline passengers.

I SERIOUSLY doubt that a commercially operating mini-bus will get you to Salzburg in 50 minutes or offer the same space as the train or that they can beat the train price: €15 off-peak (Bayern Ticket) in the hourly Regional Express trains:

Happy trails!

British Airways also run a coach service from Munich Airport to Salzburg - allow 2 hours.

We've taken the Ryan Air flight from Salzburg to Stansted twice and both times we went by train with a Bayern ticket. It was the cheapest and fastest option we could find. The bus from the Salzburg Hauptbahnhof leaves at decent intervals (I think every 20mins) so we weren't waiting long for the connection. Figure around 2hrs for the entire trip...

The "British Airways Bus Service" is actually a public service provided by the Salzburger Mietwagen service. They have 4 buses a day between Munich airport and Salzburg airport and charge €39 single, €67 return with reductions for families or groups

...and while on this topic, Ryanair are currently offering single flights from Salzburg to Stansted from £3.99 (plus taxes...)

hi i was thinking on organising a daytrip to salzburg when my boyfriend is visiting. i have read all the above comments and agree that train wud probably b better than bus. the question is once you've bought the bayern ticket (by the way wud 16th May count as off-peak?) how to you figure out which db train to get and is it a direct train from munich hauptbahnhof?

Go to bahn.de, click the English button and figure it out. RBs are the trains that a Bayern ticket is good for.
Jeeves
16th may is a sunday so you can use a bayern ticket all day
sleepycat
ok thanks have checked times, i presume if u buy the bayern ticket before u get on that will b fine?
sleepycat
sorry jeeves i meant to say 26th oops tongue.gif

presumably a bayern ticket is ok all day on a wednesday as well?

Hiya
50 minutes? No. You can get to Chieming in 50mins (if you are in a fast car being driven by Herr Indoors who knows where every speed camera/curve/speed limit/etc on that route is). Not Salzburg.
I was in Bad Reichenhall (it was Mother's Day) on Sunday (which is 7km off Salzburg airport) and that took us 1hr 15 in rain and with few jams (small area of roadworks though). We have done it quicker many times but 50min is not realistic.
Additionally, if you stay on the motorway to Salzburg airport you will need a Vignette (Austrian toll sticker), yes even though it is the next turnoff. The Austrian Police know this and love taking tourist money. Turn off at Bad Reichenhall and follow the yellow-signed non-toll roads to Salzburg for the airport. There are much fewer jams on this route.
http://www.Bahn.de will give you times and details. Bayernticket will not get you on the fastest train though so a travel time to Salzburg main station will take about 1hr 50-2hr 5min on direct trains (RB, RE - limit your search to "Nur Nahverkehr" for Schönes Wochenende/BayernTicket schedules). Shuttlebus transfers are available from the front of the station apparently (but I have never used them personally).

nope sorry on a wednesday the bayern ticket is only valid from 9 (a.m. of course!)
although once i did get away with taking a train at 8:59 ohmy.gif

just buy the ticket before you go but if you get it before the day itself then say so, because it's only valid on the date on the ticket
sleepycat
hi was planning on leaving bout that time anyway, how late is it valid til was thinkin coming back 8ish at nite?

A little off topic, but hey.
If you like Salzburg, good for you, but don't read on, because I have a very negative view of the place.

There are clearly many ways to get to Salzburg. I would just question bothering to go atall. Alot of people seem to go there, because its close. There is no other reason I can see, apart from going there purely to use the airport to get somewhere better - even if thats Stanstead.

Its just a tourist trap town, with thousands of coaches rolling up to empty gangs of camera wielding fools out every 5 minutes. They take a photo of some ugly yellow house on a cobbled road where Mozart was born or something (95% of them have onyl heard the name Mozart, and never listened to any of the music composed by him), then stroll up and down the road, deciding on which of the 50000 identical shops they will buy their Mozart Kugel chocolates from (even though they'll sell them at the airport) and maybe go on the cablecar up to the castle to look out over the town. We are already in Germany, why bother with Germany junior.

I ordered a whitebeer and a tiny little novelty sized bottle appeared on my table. Pathetic. Thats gonna make me hate anyplace wink.gif

bayern ticket is valid until the early hours, i think 3 a.m. (the next day) so that shouldn't be too much of a problem
sleepycat
hi don rina, im open to all viewpoints but i went to salzburg with my dad when i was younger and we both share the same enthusiasm for the city the sound of music was filmed in. plus its a day out, whats wrong with doing touristy things?

The cathedral is quite cool (if you like that sort of thing). I only eat the Reber Mozartkügeln not that brown shite urgh. The theatre is excellent and there are some great walks to be had around the castle. It is a tourist hellhole in summer and during the Christmas market.
This is the best thing in Salzburg though:

The Balkan Grill in the alley next to the posh shop Dantendorfer (Getreidegasse 33). This is the best Bosna place in Salzburg - Bosna means 2 skinny pork sausages covered in onions, parsley and a secret spice mix served in a bun.
There is always a queue and it is my first stop in Salzburg. Yes, every time and we are there a lot.

The Bayernticket is a good deal - cost is €22 for up to 5 adults, valid from 09:00 to 03:00 on the day of validation. It can be used on all InterRegioExpress (IRE), RegionalExpress (RE), and RegionalBahn (RB) in south Bavaria as far as Salzburg and all public transport (MVV) in Munich. It can't be used on ICE, EC IC or D - trains. There is at least one RB or RE train to or from Salzburg every hour, so there's plenty of choice.

You can even order the ticket online with the (excellent) DBahn reservation system...

PS - @newbie2004 - so far as I know there are no door-to-door salesmen for train tickets, so you are safe with this one smile.gif (Private joke)

Hear hear Don, said pretty much the same as yourself in a thread a while back.

Dear, oh dear, oh dear... where was you brought up?

03:00=3am
15.00=3pm

so 09:00-03:00 is 18 hours of potential travel - long enough?
(all day on weekends!)
