Has anyone experience with this Navigon navigation software (Good, Bad, Indifferent)?
Thanks.

Haven't any experience with the newest version, but up till now Navigon S/W has been excellent. I would hope there is no reason that this should change.

I have tried version 4 (in addition to Tomtom v2 and v3). It is very good - my impression is that the user interface is better than TomTom. It also has the capability to use TMC codes (i.e. up to date traffic information) via a suitable combined GPS/TMC receiver (which I don't have - so I have not tried this feature). TomTom only has a GPRS based subscription traffic updates service.

TomTom appears to have more detailed maps, especially Points Of Interest (garages, car parks, chemists, banks, etc.).

I was using Tomtom v3 for a long time (happy). Recently switched to Tomtom v5 (better in some ways, worse in others).
I was thinking of trying Navigon 2005 for two main reasons:
1. Navigon uses Navteq maps, while Tomtom uses the Teleatlas maps. The former are supposedly better.
2. Navigon/Navteq offers more areas than Tomtom/TeleAtlas. Specifically, countries in Eastern Europe and Gulf states (don't care about the latter, though).

If I am lucky enough, somebody is going to jump in and let us all know what Navigon 2005 is like rolleyes.gif
If not, I may come back to this post in some time to tell you how it went. I should get it for evaluation ph34r.gif

What you said about TomTom v5 is interesting. I notice Navigon do competitive upgrades, including from TomTom...

What I have not figured out yet is how the maps work in Navigon - i.e. do they give you all of Europe or do you have to buy each one?

I cannot say I know the commercial terms.
With Tomtom, you may buy it bundled with a PDA or separately as a software only package.
With Navigon, a quick browse thru their website shows that they actually give you all maps on a DVD but they are locked and you have to buy them in order to activate what's already there.

All of this is based on a 30-sec look on their website, so I assume no responsibility cool.gif

You better check this link for the Navigon map options

Oh right - now I get it... Thanks

I followed your link and found that all the maps of Europe cost 300 Euros... seems a bit steep. I'll think about it.

Just adding on to an old thread here----so here is goes...I had to download my Navigon 5 myself which was a bitch. After installed, good going. Have not used it for 2 months, now I am back, it says I have not installed s/w. Has anyone had a similiar problem, and if so, please advise. I so do not want to try to reinstall...Thanks A

In the end I bought a Becker Navi system (Traffic Pro) which uses Navteq. OK, it doesn't give you the sexy visuals but it functions well and is very accurate and up-to-date (I bought the latest 2006 Original CDs covering the whole of Europe for €50 on Ebay). Advantage is that I hear the voice commands over the car audio system and I can hook up CD-changer, etc... What really irritated me with other systems using Teleatlas was the need to buy the maps for different countries...and even then they're only then made available for 1 year. So If you drive around Europe, the costs get more expensive for little if any benefit.
