People’s Republic of Disco - Club Night Idea - Munich

Could this switch from London to Munich

grtho
Ok, this is a bit of a weird idea but seeing as it is you lot, here might be the right place to spin it: Some people I know run a monthly club night in Brixton in London called “People’s Republic of Disco: http://www.peoplesrepublicofdis.co.uk/.
There is a similar one in Cardiff run by mates of theirs and I think one in York too.

The principle is amazingly simple. It’s a FREE IN night (you bloody capitalists can leave now ;-) ) on the dance floor / back room of a pub where people bring their own CDs, give them up in a “cloakroom and the DJ will play whatever is requested. Basically everything is allowed though they usually have kind of theme. The idea is that the punters get to hear and groove to what they want and aren’t forced to listen to what the DJ wants.

Cheap, cheerful, amazingly democratic – anyone interested in maybe trying to do something like it in Munich?

Sounds like fun.
I think there were a few people on Sat night who were up for having a DJing night at Excess bar anyway.
For those who don't know Excess bar (0,5l Helles EUR 2,50!!), it's a tiny very relaxed place on Jahnstr. where you can sign down in a list, bring your own cds or vinyl and be the DJ for one night. I'm always impressed how tolerant the people in that place are cause some of the "DJs" really have a quite unusual taste of music.

Sounds quite like Stick it on:
http://www.stickiton.org.uk/

Which I have played at twice in Brighton. They have a deal where you sign up in advance to play on a particular night and each DJ has 15 minutes to play whatever they want. DJs get in for free, all others pay entry.
Of the ones I've been to it's always packed and has a great atmosphere with a bizarre collection of music.
And if you don't like it - well it changes in 15 mins anyway!

He He !!! Small World innit !!!

I used to live right opposite Excess Bar and now only live around the corner.
Only been in there once as I already have a couple of locals in the area.
And yeah, €2,50 for a helles is good, but remember that is the REAL local Munich price for a beer, not what you pay in one of the Irish Pubs!

A couple of English speaking mates of mine already go there. Is the pub still mainly Turkish? Often a sign of cheap and plenty of drink! There's 2 or 3 little alternative record shops in the area and a shop a couple of doors down that seem to run alternative parties so maybe some of the people from there head into Excess?

I heard about those "be a DJ for a night" things but I've never DJ’d and don't really want to. But if anyone is interested in DJing and/or bringing some stuff down to Excess or starting something new, please post up here.
