If you live in Munich, how many times do you actually go to Oktoberfest? Is it a daily commute, once a week, once throughout the 3/4 weeks - what's the score? And just how easy is it to get in to a tent???

For me it's different each year as to how many times I will go. If I am working then generally we'll go for lunch there one or two days. Early in the week it's quiet. If I am on a day off then I'd mosy by at around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. If it is on the weekend then you cannot be there any later than 11:30am (or perhaps even earlier) as you simply will not get a seat in any of the tents.

It's hard to get into a tent anytime after 11 or so on weekend and much, much, much harder to find a free seat if you do manage to get in. Weekdays until 14 is ok. Do the spin 'n vomit rides before drinking. Don't get jealous when other guys check out your gf. Feel complimented. Assist the person vomiting to your left. Stay away from candy and beer. Snuff sucks - pass on any free nose powder offered by drunken strangers. Secret tip: bier, radler, bier, radler ...

Bier, radler, bier, radler is a very good plan as is 3-5 Weisswürstl with Brez'n beforehand. The amount of beer doesn't always have to be the problem, it is often the lack of food...
I work close to the Wies'n and go about once a week plus maybe 2 lunchtimes in total. I only tend to go when I have a confirmed seat though.
The Italians from Südtirol (so not real Italians) on our table last year were just lovely, drunken arseholes can come from anywhere and can be male or female.
I have now contacted Sichere Wies'n about an English language version and will keep you all posted about any progress.

My wee thoughts, for what they are worth...
I LOVE THE OKTOBERFEST. It totally rocks and is lots and lots of fun.
Of course, put 11 tents each carrying on average 8,000 peeps together with enough beer to drown Africa and there is gonna be a wee bit of bother. Thing is, men are getting the blame here for groping (and yes this does go on) but to be fair, the women are just as bad. As the general message seems to be from those feeling positive about it, go and have fun - sure, be aware (but we should always be aware anyway), but number 1 rule is to just have a laugh and dont take things too seriously. I was groped last year by a twat as I was going to the loo, I was furious and with a few mass inside me wasted no time in turning right round and grabbing his privates as hard as I could, before I walked off. He was so stunned it was hilarious - wish I had, had my camera.
Last year as it was my first year, I went about 5/6 times. I didnt really know many people at that point so this year I will definitely be going much more.
Jimbo love, you will have a great craic!

i'm excited for this year's festivities. my new job is located spitting distance to the o-fest. but they say the delicous smelling roasted chickens get on your nerves after 2 or 3 days. my goal this year is to actually play some games and ride some rides!
what annoys me just as much, perhaps more than being gropped, are the verbal comments and stares. i say this because if i feel physically threatened, there are always men around to help (yes, there are still gentlemen there, even when drunk). because of my hair, i am always having men grab me, try to dance with me or worse make some lewd comment like "oh, you have wild hair, you must be wild in bed". after awhile it gets real old and fast! i want to get a dirndl this year too and although my bf thinks i will look hot in one, he has also warned me.
my bf knows i can take care of myself, but last year he judged a situation correctly and did have to tell the man harassing me to leave his gf alone. the guy was very apologetic and left me alone, but i felt really dirty although he hadn't laid one hand on me.
i think we women just have to not only look out for ourselves, but for those men too. still if you know what your're getting into, then it shouldn't be a surprise. i've been to enough frat parties in my life!
as far as booking a table is concerned, the weekend's are probably goners. during the week might still work out. there was a thread about this last year, right? where someone tried to reserve and got a rejection already in april 2003.

Is it me or do those numbers just sound weird?
So these "Oktoberfest" visitors are consuming on average less than a litre each?
(the mad crazy alcoholic fools)
And with a population of 1.3Million in Munich do they really have beds for an extra 7 Million?
And if it is 11 tents averaging 8,000 bums that is 88,000 per day. So 7 Million people over 16 days is 437,500 per day so the seats change 5 times per day and no-one is allowed to go more than once?
Lies damn lies etc.

7 million is the number of visitors, not the number of separate people who visit the Fest. I'm sure most people here go more than once.
Lots of little kiddies and families go to the Fest too, but they aren't the biggest beer drinkers.
With above, they don't go to the tents, so their numbers don't count in the butt shifting numbers.
The numbers come from the Ofest press office themselves, not just some imaginary number from Editor Bob's head.
