I'm off to Hamburg for a weekend in a few weeks time and apparently we all have to go to the fischmarkt at 4am on Sunday morning...is it any good?

It's great. I went around xmas time when I first moved to Germany, so it was pretty cold. A lot of people go after a night out, there's a big hall that has music and serves lots of alky beverages. I actually just went to buy foodstuff, veg, fruit etc for xmas, ended up blootered on gluhwein and had to get hubby to pick me up.

Well worth a visit though!!

sounds quite good - yes we are planning to stay up all night and go there - it's a work jolly and our boss is insisting we all stay up and go there - not sure I'll be able to stomach the stench of fish at 4am though...

Don't miss it! Get up early and enjoy the atmosphere (you don't have to eat the fish) - it's really worth it!

Hi everybody,

I've heard a lot about the Fischmarkt in Hamburg. Before I go to Hamburg in October, I would like to know more about it from this forum. I heard its really cheap and that almost all kinds of necessities are sold in this market. How true is it. Is it easy for any Hamburg resident to go and buy things in that market on sundays. I wanted this information from the first hand experience of people from Hamburg. I am really excited about a visit to this market. Please tell me all the information you have. Is it far from the city centre area.

I have lived in Hamburg for three years and in all that time I have only managed to go there once or twice, the one and only reason being that it is on so terribly early on a Sunday morning. The Fischmarkt starts at about 5 am, maybe even a bit earlier and it finishes around ten, but is is recommended to go there as early as possible, otherwise the best stuff might be gone. It is definitely worth buying there if you consume large quantities of fish / vegetables / flowers. If you are a single household though, it might not be worth it, unless you consume loads of fruit / fish / flowers.

For about 20 Euros (or was it 20 DMark? Cant remember, its been a while ago) you can get a huge wicker basket full of fruit, like pineapples, kiwis, oranges, apples, bananas..., simiolar bargains for fish, especially smoked eel (defo worth trying, my English Bf was sceptical at the beginning, but now he loves it). It is good fun, because the salespeople "Marktschreier" are good fun to watch as they scream at the crowds to sell their products. smile.gif

As it is just a few meters from "Reeperbahn", lots of people walk / stumble there after a night out.

Have a good time in Hamburg. cool.gif

I might be wrong but I don't think it opens until 6am.

If so you'll have time for a few more pints on the way there!

With all the years I have been here I have never been to the HH Fischmarkt...

We actually get pretty good fisch at our local market - or drive to Husum & eat at Voss's on the quayside (apparently to change owners at end-of-year).

When younger esp the time whilst I was at DESY (ie single, more money available) our Anglo-German-Japanese dining-out group
used to regularly go the Hsie Lin Men (Chinese restaurent) at the West end of the Reeperbahn for excellent food at reasonable price. Sadly its been closed since many years.

I went once when I was in Hamburg (with my ex from there), found the whole thing interesting, something you have to do, like WeissBier and Weisswurst in Munich. There were some good deals on things there. Big baskets of fresh fruit and veggies 10 Euro, and different fishes. We didn't shop, but we browsed.
Had a really cool atmosphere.
