Refunds for Defective Goods - Consumer Rights

Broken MP3 player

Hi Everyone,

I bought an MP3 player from Conrad I think it was on March 30th and the stupid thing does not seem to be working properly. mad.gif

At first it worked fine and then it started switching off for no reason. So I assumed it was the battery changed it and then it seemed to work again. However it keeps happening and on the weekend I put a brand new battery in and the same thing keeps happening.

Anyway my question is if I take it back am I within my rights to ask for a refund? I think I have learned my lesson on buying cheap appliances (it was only 59€ for a 512mb) and will probably go for something a bit better.

I have a feeling they might insist on either repairing it or giving me a new one (I suppose I could live with a new one that works!!). I have always been confused by the consumer rights here in Germany can anybody enlighten me? wacko.gif

Thanks in advance biggrin.gif

As I understand it ... You may ask for your money back within 14 days.

After that you have to accept whatever the Company suggests ... repair or replacement.

Rafles.

That is what I understood it to be as well sad.gif

Well I hope they go for replacement surely that must be cheaper than repairing it!

Thanks biggrin.gif

The things seems to be defective, but you will have to prove it to Conrad. I don't think you will have any problems (I assume you've got the receipt?).
Usually with these items the shop will exchange it and at least give you another one over the counter. The supplier has to take back the non-functional one.

But before you go back to the shop...

How often is the thing turning off? After a certain time, at random times, on the same song...?

Does it take SD/MMC/Compact Flash cards or is it all built-in?
Out of interest which Conrad MP3 player is it? Maybe give me the item number and I can have a look on their site (or send me direct link...)

Have you tried a brand new 'high-power' battery or borrowed someones fully-charged AA or AAA high-power rechargables (akkus)? Some of these MP3 players are a bit energy-greedy and maybe it's just draining the batteries really quickly and 'el-cheapo' batteries are the worst culprit. Most players will just quit playing without much warning on the battery power indicator (if it has one at all). You might find that it turns back on again (because it takes some time for the battery current to drop down after a switch on), but the time it plays for, should get shorter each time.

I'm just trying to give some useful suggestions as proving the thing doesn't work in the shop might be the hardest part, it's even harder if you bought it mail order.

It was doing it at random times and sometimes at the same time but when I inserted the new battery on Friday it turned off straight away and the same thing happened when I tried it again yesterday. Hopefully this same thing will happen in the shop!

It is all built in one of those sticks. I have not got the player/box on me but I think it is from X-Tech or something like that.

Well I took a brand new duracell battery out of the box and put it in and it switched off then obviously I checked it was in correctly etc but still the same. Yes I thought it could be the cheapo battery problem that is why I tried the duracell ones as I thought these were the best (I know very little about batteries!)

I bought it in the shop and yes my biggest concern is proving to them that it is faulty - maybe I should get a bloke to take it back for me??!

Thanks for the help

I've found the instruction manual (in english) and all that jazz!

It does indeed seem to be 'buggered', to use a technical phrase!
Thanks for all the info about using 'real' batteries, at least we eliminated that problem.

So I'd take it back to the shop and show them what it's doing (or not doing).
As it's a Conrad bestseller, I would think you will get an immediate straight swap and no more hassle than you trying to explain what's wrong with it.

It's got a better display than any of my MP3 players! ph34r.gif

In this day and age, it's specific people that matter on the service counter, not their gender! ohmy.gif You can do it!
Purple Muffin
Yes I most certainly can do it! tongue.gif

Right then I am off there after work - will let you know how I get on!

Thanks for the help again
