Contractual Question - End of School Year

Dear All

I have a question about my contract and wondered if anybody could help me.

I teach in a private school where I have to resign 3 months before the end of the school year if I want to change jobs.

The question is of course - when does the school year end? As my contract started on 1st September 2002, I could assume that it ends on 31st August, but I have a suspicion it may when the summer holidays start (22nd July this year)

I would be grateful for any advice.

Me too - I teach in a private school and our school year ends this year on 8th August.

Thanks both of you for your replies but does this mean that it would be the end of your contract if you were leaving? The school year may end for the summer holidays but when does the contract end?

One of my colleagues wants to leave at the end of this year too and she checked her contract and the contract ends June 30th even though the term ends July 22nd. Sounds a little bit silly to me. I think she negotiated with the head teacher to stay those extra few weeks at the end of term.

I don't know if you are still wanting to know anything about this but this evening I was looking at my work contract and I noticed that there are only four times a year that you can hand in your notice. I commented on this to my boyfriend and he said that this is standard in Germany (at the end of each quarter). That would explain the date of June 30th that I gave in a previous post, rather than the end of term. That colleague that I spoke of has managed to negotiate a "mini contract" for the remaining weeks. I don't know if it would be the same in your school but I hope this helps somewhat!

As an update, I have been informed that as far as the school is concerned, the school year ends at the end of July. I don't have as much flexibility - I can only resign at this time every school year.
