Health Insurance /dentist

This is a bit convuluted but I hope someone can help... I went to the dentist today and I need two fillings (which he said can wait til summer). I have insurance but the dentist said that I cannot have white ones unless I pay €150 each. At this particular surgery, they don't do the metal fillings anyway. Is it true that white fillings are not covered under any insurance plan? He also said that cleaning the teeth is not covered (€120 per hour), nor a scale and polish. Does anyone know of a dentist in Frankfurt that will do the metal fillings? I would prefer white ones but I really don't have that money and as these teeth are at the back, I am not that fussed. Is there any difference in the insurance policies here? I don't earn enough to go with private insurance. Does anyone have a dentist that will do a scrape and polish, or is it all dependent on which insurer you have? Do they have separate dental insurance at all here? If it is not that expensive, I might be interested.

I am still registered with my dentist in Sheffield, and I still pay into the Westfield Health Scheme (I used to work there so they let me stay in the scheme even after I moved overseas), which means I am enititled to £170 per year in dental work. I know that this will be enough for these two white fillings with my Sheffield dentist, and I know that this dentist is happy to do the work.

As the dentist today told me that these fillings can wait til summer (I teach, so have to wait til end of July to go and get work done), I am thinking it makes more sense to see my Sheffield dentist. UNLESS, someone can recommend a good dentist here in Frankfurt that does the metal fillings.

Also, they asked today for €10. I thought that you only paid this €10 once every quarter and I had to go see a doctor a few weeks ago and paid the €10 then. I was a little confused that they were asking for this. I said that I had already paid it and she said that you pay €10 for the dentist, €10 for the doctor etc.

One day, i will finally understand all the rules! (and probably get transferred to Bulgaria the next day...)

As far as I know, the metal fillings are not done in Germany anymore as they are made of a material called Amalgan which is likely to cause cancer. The "Praxisgebühr" of 10 € you only have to pay once every quarter but you must go to the doctor where you paid to get an "Überweisung" for any other doctor you want to go to. The system seems silly but apparantly there was too much doctor-hopping, that's is why they installed this system. So, pay once, go back to that one and get an Überweisung to any of the other doctors you need to go to.

Scale and polish not covered by health insurance? Shurely shome mishtake!? I've never had to pay for this.

And they're right about having to pay €10 quarterly for doctors and dentists separately. sad.gif They've changed the rules. If it means the krankenkassen can get their debts down and lower their rates for customers, I'll go along with it for the time being, but what really pissed me off was when their managers decided to give themselves a nice little pay rise each instead. mad.gif
