We're not near you, so I can't help with stores. But we buy our English books from Amazon.de -- they have an English section. Our public library also has a small English section.

yeah ive been having a look on amazon.de.. but most of the english books that ive had a look on there would still be cheaper to buy them through amazon.co.uk which i thought was strange.. thanks for your suggestion anyway

There's a shop just off Neumarkt on Hahnenstr ?? (the main road with the ex British Council building on it that's now a cinema / art gallery) that has a reasonable range of secondhand English books (I think he buys as well) but the prices are bearable anyway. There's also a very good one on Breitestr. (about opposite the Waschsalon bar) but they only do murders I'm afraid, but lots in English, but if that's of interest the new stuff is on the ground floor, second hand in the basement.

The two big shops on Neumarkt (Mayershe and Thalia) both have a section with English books.

there is yet another bookshop in Köln on the Breite Strasse called Jokers. They do cheepo books and have quite a few English paper and hard backs.

It's just a guess, but i could well imagine that amazon.de either feel obliged to, or have been forced to abide by the
German retail price maintenance laws. That would explain why it's cheaper to buy from amazon.co.uk.

Don't forget that you will have to pay for international shipping if you order books from amazon.co.uk, whereas amazon.de ships books for free within
Germany. Also, I have found that if there is a British and an American edition of a book, the American one will often cost significantly less.

If you can hang on a day or to I will be posting a big pile that I want to sell.
An ex boyf left them to
store in my cellar and I am fed up of them gathering dust. I am not sure what is there altogether mostly fantasy novels, thrillers etc I think.
Also I can post to anyhwere in Germany from work for 3€ up to 20kg.
If I get time I will get the list sorted tonight and post it under classifieds.
