Parking tickets

The long arm of the law

I have this really awful friend who didn't pay a couple of parking tickets when he left England 12 years ago. He now wants to replace his GB driving licence for a Euro one.

What are the chances he would get nabbed when he did this ? I personally hope the law catches up with him.

I think your friend, although he is obviously a total git, is completely in the clear. There is no way they would have kept a parking ticket for that length of time. But why doesn't your friend (the cheating swine) just get a German licence? (I am assuming he is talking about getting a "UK" Euro licence?)

We are only talking a parking ticket here or did I miss something? The no parking zone was probably only put there to make money in the first place, obviously not 100% on that, before I get quoted, but the likelihood is high.

But anyway, I wouldn't worry about it. I had a fine many many years ago and when I reapplied for my license it was okay, even though I hadn't paid the fine, and that was only 1 year between the offence and the reapplication of my licence and they never said anything about the fine.

He left England 12 years ago and is only changing his licence NOW?! How has he managed to get around the DVLC with that one?!?! ohmy.gif

Stuff the parking tickets, the Germans won't be interested in that!

The UK Police force just don't have the resources to follow up petty parking fines from a decade ago... now if he had a mutilated body on the back seat at the time, then they might still be interested dry.gif but then again he might even be behind nabbing truckers for speeding or going 16 minutes over their allowed working time in priority. mad.gif

I'll pass on all your comments to my friend. I'm sure he'll sleep better tonight.

Er...I believe he didn't bother telling DVLC where he was.

Looks like your mates problem will be a thing of the past soon,

The European Parliament has given the green light to Europe-wide driving licences to replace the present system. The new licence will be in the form of a credit card and will have to be renewed every ten years to change the photograph as part of new anti-fraud measures, (which means constantly having to fork out for a new one).

Speaking of German licences, how does one get a new one, I lost mine, not quite sure how, but I have ("Am I surprised" said the wife very good at losing things).

I'm assuming I go to the landratsamp and plead my case. Can I go to any one and renew?

Same way you got the old one. Just tell them you lost it, fill out the form, supply 2 photos and pay the fee...

Parking tickets are issed to the parked vehicle therefore you would not see it in the driving record or driver license record. When you go to register your vehicle they will add the parking charge plus one time late fee to the total registration fees. If you sell your car before the registration date the new buyer will have to eat the cost when he goes to register.

Its a good idea to check vehicle record before buying used cars.

I find that vey hard to believe. Cars aren't prosecuted for being incorrectly parked, people are. How can a fine simply transfer to the next owner and still be legally enforceable. I could be wrong, of course.

It certainly used to be the case that the owner of a car was responsible for any driving offences committed with the car, if he refused, or was unable to name the driver.

Doesn't sound an awful lot different, in principle.

That's true, but only when the car beongs to him!
By the way, do you want to buy a gun? I did shoot someone with it though, so you will be held responsible for that. Still, it saves me having to worry about it.

Driving violation and parking violation are two different thing one is an infraction and the other is just violation, I can't think of the term right now.

Driving violation: The ticket is issued under the drivers license number, failure to appear or failure to pay the fine would result in a misdemeanor and an warrant being issued... If you look at the ticket it is issued to the person not to the car.

Parking violation: It is issued to the property (in this case the car), the ticket contains the car's VIN # and such, failure to appear (in most countries no appearance is required)/ failure to pay would result in additional penalties. In most countries if you have five outstanding parking tickets they will tow your car.

Jean, just because a gun is under my name and its found in the crime seen doesn't mean I commited the crime. A quick call to your local DMV (department of motor vehicle) will explain you the difference.
