I have lost my driving license, I had it Wednesday and I believe it fell out of my jacket when I was picking my daughter up.

What's the score now, can I get a replacement through the post from the DVLA?
Or do I have to go back to get a new one?

Can the embassy in D-Dorf give a tempoary one as I'm donald without a license?
Purple Muffin
I lost mine about 8 years ago and I just sent off to the DVLA for a new one.

I was living in the UK at the time and just got a form from the Post Office.

If you get your driver number from the DVLA maybe you will be able to apply for a German one? Mind you am not sure in the paperwork for this probably an absolute nightmare!
andrea
If you have an address in the UK you can get a replacement UK one, but if you mention that you live in Germany then you will have to get a German one.

You don't need to resit your test or anything. You will have to get a letter from the DVLA though to say you are entitled to drive, it's a standard letter they send. Then you need to get a form from the Rathaus. All in all it took me about 3 weeks.

If you need your licence to hire a car (I can't think of any other reason why you would have to have it), there is an arrangement which some hire companies do (Europcar, for example) where they will ring up a DVLA number to check the validity of your licence and they will confirm it provided your application for a replacement licence is being processed. I can't remember the details, but it is possible.

I've done this in Zurich airport, the care hire company rang the DVLA on a special line, and the DVLA faxed thru proof of my being able to drive. I think I still have the number at home, if you need it.

Details about getting a duplicate license from the UK are here:

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/drivers/applydl.htm

It would be simple enough to get a replacement for a photocard license - it would be posted to your address in the UK.

If you had a papaer license then it would be more difficult - you have to have a photocard replacement. This entails filling in a couple of forms, sending these in with photos and original documentation to prove your identity.

You are supposed to get a German replacement license if you are resident here.

DVLA Reply:-

I am sorry, but if you are no longer resident in GB, it is not possible to
reissue your British licence.

As you have lost your licence, please make enquiries with the Licence
Issuing Authority in the country in which you now reside regarding advice on
driving there.

Should the German licensing authorities require confirmation of your driving
licence details, please telephone the Centre to request a certificate of
entitlement.

Switchboard Telephone No. 01792 78 2341

Opening Hours - Monday to Friday 8.15am - 4.30pm

A fee of £5.00 is charged to cover the cost of issuing a certificate giving
licensing details (a D737 certificate).

When you telephone the Centre you will be asked to provide your full
personal details or driver number and details of your credit/debit card
number (we accept Visa, Eurocard, Mastercard and Maestro). If the
credit/debit card holder is someone other than yourself we will also need to
speak to them.

Richard do you still have an address that you can use in the UK ? Then you can reapply for a license. I can bring you a form if you want ??
WelshRichard
I suppose I can use my parents' address. Yeah, a form would be great thanks.

Trying to phone the DVLA is a 'kin nightmare biggrin.gif

Hi Ben,

No need mate, after 4 days of trying to get through to the DVLA I eventually did, and they will not issue me a new license. Instead they will send a certificate of entitlement and I will have to get a German one blink.gif

Thanks anyway smile.gif

TOP TIP FOR IDIOTS WHO THINK THEY HAVE "LOST" THEIR LICENCE, AND SPEND WEEKS OF PHONING POLICE STATIONS, THE DVLA, EMBASSIES, OLD ADDRESSES, AND THEN FILLING IN FORMS AND HAVING TO PRETEND YOU STILL LIVE IN THE UK...

CHECK THE F**KING POCKETS OF THE TROUSERS YOU WERE WEARING ON THE DAY YOU "LOST" YOUR LICENCE.

On the subject of driving licenses...

like er... I lost mine last year sometime. Yup I checked all my pockets last night it's not there.

How can I get a replacement. I do not mind taking a test again here in Germany but then I have the problem of finding a Brit driving school. You'd think that was that end of it. but it's not... I am resident in Luxembourg and only work in Germany during the week. No way I can get anything started in Lux as I need to be there physically during the week. Which ain't going to happen.

I have no idea what my license number is.

Someone tells me in order to take a test here I have to be a German.

Any any good ideas... smile.gif

the only help i can give you on this is
you dont have to be german to take your test here.
the writen test can be done in english, even the learning aids are in english if you want them. as for the instructor speaking english, he does not have to but some do.

where was your license issued that you lost? if it was uk get on to them, but dont tell them you live abroad, use a uk address straight away.
Tobias
Yes. It was a UK license.
To be honest I had an accident several years ago. I stopped driving after that. Scared the life outta me. I would feel more comfortable in taking some lessons again and maybe sitting a test just to get back into the swing of things.

Question: Can I just approach a German driving school and take a test that way without having Germany residency?

Thanks for all your help.
bbulldog
you should be able to go into a driving school and take a test without being a resident. lots of germans go to poland now. best is just go into one and ask..
Tobias
Kewl,

I'll do that. Know any driving schools in Düsseldorf?
WelshRichard
Tobias,

If you contact the DVLA they will send you free of charge a "certificate of entitlement", you can then (in theory) exchange this for a German licence without taking a test. However, if you do this, then your British licence becomes invalid.

As for a driving instructor, theres an English speaking school in Niclas-Knopff-Platz in Duss-Heerdt. Not sure of the name sorry.

Hope it helps.
