Does anyone know of a web-site where I can get times and prices from a trip from Köln to the UK?
Fuchs66
Certainly do

WelshRichard
Cheers!

They do indeed give a route, but no price... I'll have to give them a ring

Silly question but why train?
WelshRichard
Just being nosey really.

The flight from Düss to Heathrow will cost 140€ approx, then the Heathrow Express at £26 return, then the train from Paddington to Swansea costs £46.

Just wondering if an "all-in" from Düss to Swansea might be cheaper.
ramonb
Well if you like round trips you could always go via Berlin - Bristol for about 20 quid with easyjet. probably end up costing more getting across there anyway.
Fuchs66
You can try maybe you'll be lucky and get a special deal but normally it costs a fortune to UK by train (especially without Bahncard) I'd look at flying Hapag Lloyd Express fly to Coventry/Birmingham from Köln/bonn airport might be better for you.
WelshRichard
Of course there's always RyanAir from Weeze to Stansted, then its just getting from there to Paddington...

Hi,

I did Frankfurt - Liverpool by train a couple of years ago. All in all it cost about £110, I think.

It went from Frankfurt, Cologne, Brussels, through the tunnel to Waterloo and then from Euston up north. It was a very long trip (set off at about 8am and got home at about 11pm), but the biggest hassle of all was getting from Waterloo to Euston!

It's best going to the international travel desk at the station rather than booking on the internet because they can do you a better deal that way.

You could also catch a bus, Frankfurt Main - Cheltenham - was about 70 quid last year I think.
Bit of a back breaker though - 20 hours

Klm flies to Cardiff from Düsseldorf, might be expensive though.
WelshRichard
Yes, via Amsterdam, and you are right, its bloody expensive! laugh.gif

I think my original plan was the cheapest... The amount you spend to watch a football game eh? tongue.gif

Welsh Richard, a fellow Taff

I did Ulm to Germany with eurolines (BUS) bookable on the UK national express website

cost £80 return ...but did take 26 hours with a 4 hour wait in London, but as your going to Swansea then the connection maybe quicker as its a main route.

Not to bad a trip, used tunnel the first few times I did it and ferry the last. You can carry a shed load of kit back with you aswell.

Knees hurt if you have a huge fat croatian sitting next to you who's favourite filmstar is dolph lungbrain ( i use star loosely!) and tells you all about his best films from Stuttgart to Liege!!! mad.gif blink.gif

Still worth a look if you want to save

This might be a bit far away, but Ryan Air are now flying into Baden-Baden Flughafen.

My brother got a return flight to Standstead for 30quid last week!

Duncan.

sad thing is KLM are cheap as chips Cardiff to Stuttgart/Munchen but expensive Stuttgart to Cardiff.

Suppose its cheaper to goto Germany than it is to get into the land of our lord that is Wales, even have to pay to get in via the severn bridge! biggrin.gif

Keep you English at bay lol! ph34r.gif

WelshRichard -- as a SW Walian recently moved to just outside Cologne, I'm looking at getting home with the new Germanwings service to Birmingham (starts in April), then car hire down the M5 and A40. Looking at the prices on Germanwings, the flight'll be somewhere around 40 euros.

Whenever I get home, I always think it'd be easier and cheaper to get to New York or Moscow!
WelshRichard
hopevalley:- What part of SW Wales are you from?

What are the train links like these days from Birmingham Airport to SW Wales?
As it could be an option...

Still looks like BA and then train from Paddington, or Weeze-Stansted and then Paddington.
hope valley
Not sure if you'll know it, but I'm from a village called Ferryside, on the Towy estuary South of Carmarthen.

The train from Birmingham requires a change in Bristol, so it's more or less the same journey time as from Paddington (about three hours, only changing opens the risk of delays). The express from LHR to Paddington is more frequent, but expensive at 20 euros.

Still, I haven't taken the train home in ages, not since experiencing 9 hours of delays on a single weekend trip from London about 3 years ago: on the way over Railtrack eventually gave up trying, shelling out 150 quid for a taxi from Cardiff at 2am. My parents have switched allegiance to National Express and something called 'the Megabus'. huh.gif

Is the cheap KLM ticket from Cardiff a return?

If yes, have you considered buying 2 return tickets from Cardiff. You can use one of the bookings for the flight home, and one to get back out here again.

I used to do this quite oftern with Czech Airways out of Praha.

Just a thought Duncan.
WelshRichard
@ hopevalley:

I've heard of Ferryside, but never been there. BTW, I am originally from Port Toilet. ohmy.gif

And the Germanwings offer was the best, 54€ return, and it takes 3 hours from Birmingham Airport via New Street and Brizzle. So thats what I've booked.

where do german wings fly from to birmingham?
Clairey

I took the train from London to Frankfurt via Paris last year... a very long and painful trip. Nice countryside, but I definitely recommend flying if you can. www.expedia.com always seems to have nice cheap flights when I want to go to the States, maybe you can check it out? Or e-flights.de is also fairly cheap

Cheers, Rebecca
