Has anyone had a really good day out on the piste in Germany? I was thinking of going skiing for a weekend in Germany and wondered if any Britboarder could recommend a good place to go, within easy driving distance of Rhein Main.

most of us here in Munich tend to head straight down to Austria cos the bavarian slopes aren't that good with old lifts (distinct lack of modern Bubble lifts). One of the easiest to get to is Ski Welt Wilder Kaiser (Ellmau, Scheffau, Westendorf etc. They also have a ski-lift connection planned to Kitzbühel but i don't think it is open yet.), which is just over an hour from Munich. You can get there without having to pay for an Austrian Autobahn Vignette.

It would be a bit difficult for a day trip but you can always make a weekend of it.

Berchtesgaden is nice aswell and still inside Germany, which means the prices for staying and food etc. are still a little bit lower than going to Austria. It's right at the austrian border though and you can go there aswell.

Around the Königssee you got Jenner also

How about Winterbeg ? It's closeby so there slopes aren't huge but still good for a weekend of skiiing fun.

GEt down to the Allgaeu, www.hindelang.net oder www.orberstorf.com, Neblehorn and fellhorn are great for skiing, so is oberjoch for beginners. You can even pop into austria from there (Kleine Wasertal - Spellcheck)

Look up www.englishguesthouse.com for more links and if you need a bed

Sonthofen is not so nice as a stadt, but its location is great and the FIS spring and langlauf champs are there this month.

There are loads more places to ski in the area, aswell as being a mecka for paraflug and Brit Squaddies.

Theres also a great swimming baths in Sonthofen, to relax the muscles after sliding around the slopes.

I went skiing on the Wasserkuppe in Hessen in the end. The slopes were rated as reds but they were more like blues. Still it was a hell of a lot better than those dry ski slpoes back in blighty.

I think I may check out Feuerberg next time as that has slightly longer runs and even a chair lift.

Many thanks for the tips.

P.S Anyone been skiing at Feldberg near Freiberg and if so what was it like?

In January, I skied in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is accessible by train or car (about a 5-hour trip regardless). In January, some of the runs were closed, but since the Munich area just got dumped on this week, it should be really good right now.

I live in Winterberg, if you do come up let me know and we can meet and I can show you around. We have had 14 inches of snow since Saturday.
