Hello there, I have just discovered this forum and think it is fantastic ! Had I known about it when we first moved to Germany would have made the transition much easier smile.gif

Does anyone know where I can get hold of some really good mature cheddar around Stuttgart ? Real sells a variety of cheddar but it is more like the mild (tasteless) cheddar

Am also looking for Granary bread mix. Have found all kinds of other varieties but can't find Granary Bread anywhere in Germany !

Thanks

Well, welcome...

Do prefer running cheese, or cheese and wine parties?

Never really thought of cheese in the fields of sport & social life before smile.gif

As already written in "Miscellaneous", try the Irish Cheddar at REAL... Not being in Stuttgart, can't really help with other recommendations, but if it's anything like Cologne, you won't find a large selection of british cheeses. The cheese shops here don't really seem to be much aware of british cheeses.

Aldi sell bread mixes, I know they do Kornbrot and Sonnenblumen, not sure about granary, couldn't you just add a few more nuts!!??
mike_a
Wouldn't that then be a nuttery?

I thought it is grain that is kept in a granary biggrin.gif

Well Granary is more of a malt taste not nutty malty. very good indeed

Hi,

I'm not sure if you will find it there but at the Markthalle, Dorotheenstraße 4 (Stadtmitte) you have a lot of foreign stuff, so maybe some cheddar as well.

Granary bread is given it's particular delicious flavour from malted barley. You can buy malt extract from any reformhaus.
I can also reccomend a desertspoon of tracle to a loaf.

Have you tried the English shop in Stuttgart, The prices are a bit high, but you can get most things from home?

I get English cheddar from the Piccadilly English shop, Pilgrims choice mature is very good & as Weeman said you can get it there in Stuttgart too. Same outfit as the one we have in Heidelberg.

Might the two stores that you list also have Cheshire cheese?

The one in Heidelberg does & also has Red Leicester cheese.

Finally found some 'chedder cheese' in Strasbourg...only...it is a very orange in colour and has red wax (like you get on Babe bell) on the outer edges on the wedge. What's that all about?

Taste nice though..more like a Frarmhouse Chedder but not as crumbly.

It sounds like you have bought the same cheese as is available here in Paderborn (SB Friedhof Gross Verbraucher Markt, available only as a whole cheese not in wedges). Its actually real chedder from the Chedder Gorge area, we sometimes buy it as a treat, it also makes the best Nudel Auflauf ever.

I have found Cathedral City Cheddar, which is of course a good brand name of it at home in our local Kaufland, €2.20 for a small packet which is not cheap but I enjoyed every mouthful... smile.gif

The Edeka supermarkets also sell mature cheddar, at least up here where I live they do!

Bit pricey, but as a treat every now and then ... tongue.gif
