it must have been something to wake a man who has slept through cyying babies and violent thunder storms
That's because they are just noises, poor bloke probably thought the shaking meant it was time to get up for work
Any woman who's spent time with a man must surely know that the noises made by children, thunder storms and alarm clocks don't wake a man at sleep.
Reminds me of the quake we had here about 10 years ago. That was about 4,7 centred at Roermund, about 70km away. Actually did a lot of damage in the vicinity.
My ex woke me saying I had to wake up because the house was shaking. I said it was probably just a big train (we lived near a railway line). She said no! It was more than that.
Having lived the formative years of my life near the highland fault line, where the occasional rumble is pretty normal, I then suggested that it was probably just an earthquake, so she should go back to sleep as it was nothing to worry about.
That's when panic broke out. The light went on, I got pushed around and shouted at, that the 2 feet spherical glass ceiling light was about to fall on us. Well, it was swaying about 10cm out of line. So I said it would be alright and, as it was now over, we could go back to sleep.
She was having none of that. I had to get up and get dressed. She insisted I go round the flat and check for cracks, because the house might fall down. Mind you, there was a lot of activity on the street, but they hadn't got round to pitching tents.
Having assessed that there were no cracks which might endager the stability of the house, she got up and double checked. Having seen there were none, the question of the condition of the walls on the lower floors (we lived on the 5th from 7) came up, so I should go and ask the neighbours. I opened the door and shouted down the stairs, if anybody had any cracks in their walls. Somebody actually shouted a "no" back, which seemed to comfort her.
So with that all clear, we went back to bed.
That was when it occurred to her that the wardrobe could have fallen on us, as it had been shaking around as well. So the next weekend was spent relocating the bedroom furniture, to ensure that the wardrobe couldn't fall on us if there was another quake.
