"Zander"...

"Zanderfilet"

I'm no gourmet so maybe someone can help me out here: Zander is given in dictionaries as "pike-perch". Well, surely it should be one or the other, right? Anybody know what you'd be eating if you were tucking into a nice "Zanderfilet"?

When I was a kid and used to go fishing, the word we used for Zander was..er ...Zander. The English name is, as you found, is pike-perch, but it is neither Pike nor Perch, rather a separate species.

It tastes ok, but I find that unless you fillet it correctly you get lots of bones.

Quite correct Adriang, the reason it has the same name is because it's not a native fish to British fresh water, it was introduced some 30 years ago (approx) and it's been stuffing its gills full on anything that moves since. Many water authorities have made attemps in the past to eradicate it from their waters, because of the damage it was doing to fish stocks.

Yes if I may add my tupence worth, what the others have said is quite true,
it's lovely fish and tastes excellent, and in UK as Mack pointed out it's considered
a pest as it is not native to our waters, I've seen local authorities trawling up and
down canals using 2 big electrodes in the water to electrocute everything in
the water in an attempt to eradicate this species ...although it's not exactly
a selective method ..still an excellent sport fish !
