I'm currently "listening" to the latest Lou Vega number on Finnish radio (long story). God - it's BAD. It's gonna be a big hit when it gets to Germany... ohmy.gif
bbulldog
well it wont make the schlagerparty next month. I have actually persuaded Neil to come too, should be quite a night
That Bloke Off The Radio
Ooooh! Do you do requests DJ Bully?

Can I have Hermes House Band's version of "I Will Survive" (brilliant and very long party song!) followed by Doctor Hook's "Who The F*ck is Alice", John Denver "Country roads", Lighting Seeds "It's coming home" Bryan Adams "Summer of 69".
Surely no schlager party would be the same without this little lot?!?! blink.gif

...no, no. no ...you don't understand Schlager ..it's that dreadful WDR4 sh*t !
I absolutely HATE schlager music

...if they had Brian Adams and co it wouldn't be so bad !, and the worse bit is I'm paying MONEY to watch it

You're right Neil, actually I don't think I'd consider any of TBOTR's examples Schlager. Maybe not everybody's taste (not even old fuddy-duddies like me), but no way Schlager!
That Bloke Off The Radio
Not in the literal sense but you know what the Germans are like - Tell them something is shit and they'll move the bloody goal posts.

According to my ex, Schlager to her age group is this kind of stuff - The kind of stuff that gets played over and over in any pub or at any party and that has everyone singing in unison to it - It's actually one thing I love about getting pissed in Germany (or at least the pubs and parties I've been to!) - Instead of increasing the likelihood of the outbreak of a mass ruck as would happen in the UK, the more pissed we get the more likely we are to break into song. Dare I say it, it's actually a bit...well...gay really! ohmy.gif
That Bloke Off The Radio
Icidentally Neil, why are you paying for WDR4? I get it for free even at my pad in the UK...And that's whether I want it or not!
RMA
That's the price we poor sods who live (more or less) permanently in Germany have to pay - the GEZ are knocking on the door and it doesn't matter whether you listen to it or not.

Having said that, it's no different in the UK, you've got to pay your TV licence there as well, regardless what you watch.

OK, I know, thanks to the lack of "Anmeldepflicht", if you're regularly out of the country you can avoid it, and for the same reason, also in Germany - I managed it as well for about six years, with the net result that these six years are missing from my "Rentenkonto". Maybe wasn't such a good idea after all!
That Bloke Off The Radio
Sorry; Mis-understood. Happily pay my German taxes (at least you get something in return that makes them worthwhile) but I mistakenly thought you were paying some sort of subscription on satellite for WDR or something! wacko.gif

It's the worthless UK taxes and licenses I try to avoid (as opposed to evade)...And after a comment like that if anyone from the Inland Revenue is on this board my name for the purposes of of any summons is Muriel Farquhar.

Well Muriel wink.gif ...I think your ex- needs her ears checked if she thinks Brian Adams & co. is Schlager music. !!! ohmy.gif
No, no, no, no ...Schlager is German dross of the worst kind, things like Roy Black (or Roy Blaeck as the Germans say), Jürgen Drews, (ich schenke dir (ge)flügel laugh.gif , Mattias Reim, Andreas Rauch and many, many more sad gits  in fact all manner of post-menapausal music which seems to be the prefered choice of german grand mothers and Pützfrauen and worst of all ...it all sounds the bloody same ...oh god ! I think I'm going to throw-up just thinking about it ph34r.gif

if you're feeling sad check out
Sch*iß Schlager music

luke
What makes me laugh are all those singers who walk across some mountain field mimng along to their newly released song all about the "Schöne Duft" and the "Frische Luft". Always a couple of cows in the background, and if it's a female singer, she'll bump into a Lederhosen-clad mountain bloke who'll give her a big grin and she'll wink back at him. Sometimes they'll have the band strolling along behind the singer pretending to play and they'll all be smiling and winking at each other, spreading their arms open wide to embrace the care-free mountain life.

Oh, yes, nearly forgot ... the bloke in the Lederhosen always has a bit of grass sticking out of his mouth.
reggie
Neil, Luke, you both seem to be very familiar with the concept of Schlager. A little too familiar perhaps. unsure.gif
That Bloke Off The Radio
I know what traditional schlager sounds like- Think it was more the case that she was trying to give the type of music that always gets played at German pubs and parties that everyone sings/bawls along to a category name.

Any idea what its actual category title is? huh.gif
Neil
well I think the Germans could cover a multitude of sins by simply calling it
"Achtziger" i.e. 80's music.
