Is there ANYONE living in the ESSEN area? I feel I am the only Brit in Germany.

Will check out the board daily, hopefully not in vain, for a response. Geordielad.
Neil
Hi Geordielad,

welcome to the board biggrin.gif , to answer your question, ...no I'm not in Essen, but then again I'm not that far away (just out side Dortmund) I quite often head to Essen-Kupferdreh to the best Ice cream shop on the planet (Eiscafe Plükthuhn) when I'm feeling indulgent cool.gif ...which only takes about 40 mins from here going on the back-roads towards Velbert, 'don't know what part of Essen your in, but if your mobile it's only a stone's throw away ?

cheers

Neil biggrin.gif

And I'm still here too occasionally. Living within spitting distance of those boys, and working in Essen.

There is a large thriving group of people on the nrwexpats email list, at the yahoogroups web site.

RMA
I think he probably meant "NRW expats", I just had a look in Google and got five pages worth (including the Britboard). Didn't find one that was obiously for expats in Nordrhein Westphalen though.
Neil
Thanks for that Roy, ...I found it too, it's a Yahooo group for ex-pats in NRW
If anyone else interested (membership has to be approved first)

Hi BBulldog, I'm fine thanks, how r u? I'm pretty fed up with this rain, just watching the river to see if it bursts its banks.

I've checked your nrwexpats subscription and its still there, but set to NoMail. I can only edit the list, I can't make any changes to your yahoogroups subscription. You could always just create a new profile, and resubscribe to yahoogroups, or I can change your settings to mail, or digest if you want.

Hi Others

NRWExpats is at yahoogroups.com. If you subscribe, you'll quickly get approved, because the requests come to me and the other moderator (Kristina from Monchangladbach, but she has no internet connection at the moment), and I respond as soon as I see them.

Currently, a thanksgiving and/or Halloween party is being planned on the list. Also, I think, drinks in Dusselddorf by the younger(!) members (ie. those still young enough to go to the pub at night and last out until at least 11 pm).

BBulldog

I can't send you a PM with the yahoo password/login name in it, as I don't have that! I only control the NRW expats group, not the yahoo site!

Sorry... can only suggest you reregister under a new name, and then re-subscribe, or I can change your mail option to digest/mail.

hth, avril
Bombi
Hi,

Just wanted to say that I know what's it like feeling one is the only one here!!! Having read that there are over 600,000 Brits in NRW, I do wonder where they all are!!

Essen has a great Christmas market so perhaps that might be a good place for British NRWers to meet! smile.gif
Bombi
Ooops, I put one too many 0 in that figure, it's only around 60,000 Brits living in NRW and not as I wrote 600,000!!! wacko.gif
Raffles
60,000 Bombi ... where the heck are they all hiding then?

I am just outside of Essen in Schönebeck. I am 66 years old, and have been in Gemany for 4 years. Don't speak very much German, as all my friends speak good English. I am joining the Volkshöchschule this week in Essen, and will probably be the oldest in the class. LOL.

Anyone who would like to contact me is most welcome to do so. biggrin.gif

Hello Raffles

I go to the VHS in Essen twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, for German classes. There are several people in my class who are in their 60s, so don't feel that you're going to be the oldest!

Which class are you going to join?
Raffles
Hi Mairinger, sorry for the delay in replying. I am to begin classes on Thrsday 16th. Dec , at AWO in the city centre . Twice weekly, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Hope to meet some Brits there,

The last VHS that I attended was in Mannheim, and had 6 nationalities, and the "Teacher" could only speak German.!!! As you can imagine, it was chaos. A good laugh, but certainly not an educational experience I care to remember. LOL.
Mairinger
Hi again

What's AWO?
Mairinger
I think its better when the teacher only speaks German, I find I learn faster that way. I've never yet been in a class with any other native English speakers! In my current class we have thai, bosnian, polish, and russian (russians are in the majority).

What's AWO?

Possibly AWO Essen.
Raffles
AWO is the name of the Volkhochschüle. I was recommended to go there as the usual one had already started their new course a few weeks earlier, and AWO were just about to start their new one in two weeks, so I was happy to get fixed up so quickly. Costs Euro 76 for the course.

Just registering that i am living in essen and working in düsseldorf and keen to meet up with the english speaking crowd in the NRW. Been here 8 months and only found this board today...unglaublich!

Guys, i'm a young italian dude who speaks english fluently and lives in sad NRW (Dortmund).
If you don't mind me not being a true brit, i'd like to meet english speaking people for social activities.
It's one year that i live in germany, but my german is still rudimentary.
And i can't find any italian community here, it seems that they vanished long time ago lol!
So if anybody is interested in meeting me here around, please drop me a line or PM.
Ciao!
deano
I've been living in Essen for about 6 years now. Can even speak the lingo. Best place to find other English-speakers has always been the Irish pubs. The only one I know in Essen is Fritzpatrick's in the Giradet Haus (Rüttenscheid). It's a bit crap and very expensive, though. I'm barred, too sad.gif

I don't know about the VHS personally (though I've heard a few bad things), but if anyone is looking for German lessons, I can heartily recommend Ecole Nicole in Rüttenscheid. Nicole is a personal friend of mine, a great teacher and a very lovely person wub.gif. The website is http://www.germantalkschule.de

Anyone fancy getting plastered sometime? Coffee would do, too, I guess.

Hi folks, I'm a German living in Mülheim (just on Essen's doorstep). 14 years ago I've started an international English-speaking Club in my town - The Social Club Mülheim a.d. Ruhr. We have got members from all continents. There are a large number of Germans who enjoy speaking English but also people from other countries who can communicate in English only.
We have several meetings every month - including two pub evenings (at a German pub and a local Irish pub). If you would like to meet us and down a jar or three please get in touch - wawmh@freenet.de. By the way, my "Domestic Manager" (the trouble and strife) is English ... ;-)
Please visit our website: www.geocities.com/social_club_muelheim
deano
Where is the pub? And what time? If it's not too far from Essen (I'd be coming on my bike), I'll pop in.
Wolf
deano: The pub is called "Hopfen-Sack" and is in Mülheim near the post office (Hingbergstr./corner Kalkstr. - if that means anything to you ...). If you go by train to Mülheim it's dead easy to find us. As you get off the platform you want to turn towards the town centre. Walk right through the station past the escalators to the Underground. When you see the entrance doors to the "Forum" shopping centre you want to turn left out of the building. On the opposite corner you will see the "Post". Just walk past the "Post" along the pedestrian bridge. "Hopfen-Sack" is on the first street corner. It's a hotel, restaurant and pub. Just ask for the "English Club" and they'll direct you to our tables.
I look forward to seeing you there, too!
Wolf
Sorry, deano, forgot to mention the time: 8pm on Thursday, March 24! Cheers!
Raffles
My wife and I spent a very enjoyable evening last night at theHopfen-Sack. The Hotel is very nice ,and in addition to the usual bar they have a nice restaurant area, although a meal can be served at your table in the bar if you so wish.
Met Wolfgang our host and founder, and a very pleasant female Club member, who we spent the entire evening with. Now looking forward to another meet-up on Tuesday in the Irish Pub there, and getting to know one or two others. Come on along guys It's very friendly and I'm sure you lonely Brits will have a nice evening.
Thanks for a pleasant evening Wolf. Bill & Jutta.
Wolf
@raffles: I'm glad to enjoyed our company last night. Hope to see again soon!
