Anyone interested in meeting up in Darmstadt?

Let me know!
Adriang
I'm always up for a few beers in Darmstadt. There is already quite a large ex-pat community in Darmstadt, due to the presence of the European Space Agency and Eumetsat.

Have you been in Darmstadt long?
Hellie
Wish I was there...I'd meet up...but won't be there for a few months yet. Things to sort out in UK first. But have fun anyway! smile.gif
Caroline
Hello LRHH !

I am in Darmstadt too (well just south of it actually !).
Let me know what date you are thinking of and I will see it I can make it.

Heidelberg is not far; just 40 mins train ride away - I'd be up for it!
Adriang
So, the question is where and when?

The weather forecast for this weekend is good, so it maybe the last opportunity to have a drink and sit outside.

The other possibilty is the Griesheimer Zwiebelmarkt 24-27th September.

Fantastic!

I organised a meetup last week, but only 2 other people came - nice people but they're leaving soon.

Unfortunately I am booked up this weekend - company BBQ Saturday and a farewell party sad.gif Sunday (it is so sad when friends leave). However, I am pretty much free until October and it doesn't have to be the weekend.

Anyone any good ideas about venues / times etc - maybe the onion market???

smile.gif

PS - been here six years (only came for two)!
Adriang
LRHH,

The Zwiebelmarkt is not a bad idea, as there will be lots of ex-pats there anyway. If you are really observant, you might even see and onion. smile.gif So we could pencil in the weekend 24-27th September. I don't know how many britboard members live in the Darmstadt area, but hopefully we can get more than two.

I've also been here 6 years, and I don't really see myself going back to the UK anytime soon.
Caroline
I would like to come along to the Zwiebelmarkt but we have provisionally agreed to meet up with friends in Cologne. Should this be cancelled you can count me in !
LRHH
Zwiebelmarkt it is then. Is there a good place to meet up? I've been to Griesheim but never stopped anywhere but the vets near the Tierheim. Also Sunday would be best for me.

I will try and drum up a few more people to bring with me. I take it there is more to do there than go oinion spotting???

Let me know time and place etc.

PS - Caroline - Have a nice time in Köln - drink a Kolsch for me!
Adriang
Probably the best place to meet is at the tram stop Wagenhalle.

The Fest is the normal German formula: Beer, Wurst and Music. Onions will also be present, in the form of Zwiebelnkuchen and one old lady who paints faces on onions and charges 2 EUR for them ohmy.gif

I can go any day, so Sunday would also be good for me. I'll be going Friday with an ex-pat group anyway, so I can find out the best parts of the Markt then.

Zwiebelnkuchen

I avoid that stuff like the plague, a few years ago my co-driver aint some of that stuff and coudn't stop farting, and they were not little ones that you would hardly notice either mad.gif

Certainly if you want to emulate Mr Methane then Zwiebelnkuchen is a good choice. You could also improve the effect by drinking a few litres of Ratskeller Beer washed down with some Handkäse mit Musik

If that combination doesn't produce a hole in the Ozone layer over Germany nothing will.. smile.gif

Sunday it is then. Any kind of Haltestelle sounds good to me, I don't think it would be a good idea to take the car! AM or PM? As long as you are sure you don't mind going twice that is.

As for painting onions - I have now found my new vocation - fantastic!

My first experience of Zwiebelküchen was accompanied by Federweißer - enough said. dry.gif

PS - my own personal german menu (no offence intended - it's a joke)

Spätzle - bad pasta
Federweiser - bad wine
Zwiebelküchen - bad quiche
Flammküchen - bad pizza
Ebelwoi - bad cider
Pommes - bad chips
Wurst - bad sausage

Any more?
Adriang
I think you've just about covered it all, although I think the sausages here are very good. To add to your list:

Darmstäder Beer - bad beer (but good emetic)
Darmstäder Weizenbier - awful Beer (excellent laxative effects...)
Weisswurst - CJD Sausage
Schweinhaxe - Roasted roadkill

Don't even start talking about putting Speck in with vegetables.. mad.gif

Zwiebelnmarkt: Sunday 26th 1800 by Wagenhalle Tram stop?
LRHH
Road kill! laugh.gif

Speck! A friend of mine is vegetarian and everything she orders seems to end up with little pink squares of dubious meat in it. It's actually quite funny watching her pick them out one by one. On the plus side - it has been good for her diet.

Time and date are fine by me.
Adriang
Do we know how many will be turning up on Sunday?

How will we recognise each other??
LRHH
Dear Adrian

As long as the weather is nice there should be 3 of us. 2 Brits and an honorary Brit. As for recognition, I could wear my union jack socks. I don't know really. Any ideas?

BTW What do we do if the weather is like today? Is there a good bar nearby? Ugh - just had to walk the dog!
Adriang

There's the solution; bring the dog in a union jack jacket biggrin.gif

There is a good bar about 50m from the tramstop called Linie 9. If it is tipping down there we'll be waiting there.

I can also give you my handy number in case you get lost or have to cancel 0170 522 8159
LRHH
That's handy - trouble is I don't have one. I'll get the hubby to bring his.
LRHH
We're still on. See you there.
Adriang
See you there by the tram stop Wagenhalle, 1830 take the tram No.9 from Luisenplatz.
LRHH
Adrian

Thoroughly enjoyed footling around the Griesheim Zwiebelfest, thanks for the guided tour. We found our car - eventually.

Shame we didn't get to see the lady painting faces on onions, my €2 are burning a hole in my pocket.

A return match of the highlights in Arheilgen is on offer once we get back from the UK. biggrin.gif Or maybe see you down the English club for darts!
Adriang
I'm glad you all enjoyed the Zwiebelmarkt. Shame about the painted onions, but I think the women who sells them was the one selling the dragon and other weird bits of pottery. It looks like the pottery is more profitable than the onions.

When you get back from the UK, we could certaibnly meet in Arheilgen, or darts as suggested.

Have a good journey home.
LRHH
I thought of another one:-

Sandkuchen - bad cake!
Tim Hortons Man
There is an English club in Darmstadt, maybe eaiser to join that than trying to start something new. biggrin.gif

Why not try An Sibin Irish Pub up near the Youth Hostel. It pretty big and there's live music and a friendly atmosphere.
