QUOTE
German authorities suspended two police officers after photographs were found showing them giving the stiff-arm Nazi salute and carrying a flag bearing a swastika, officials said on Friday.

The two officers were suspended after a court-ordered search of their homes and police stations uncovered the photographs, they said.

A German policeman has been suspended after greeting a colleague with the Hitler salute when he showed up to guard the British embassy in Berlin.

The 42-year-old officer raised his right arm in the salute and said either "Heil Hitler" or "Sieg Heil", both of which are illegal to use as a greeting in Germany, a police spokesman said yesterday.

"He probably wanted to be funny," said the spokesman, who confirmed the man had been on duty at the roadblock in front of the embassy. "But he will not be laughing now. We are taking it very seriously and he has been suspended until an investigation has been completed.

An embassy spokesman said it was a matter for the police.
