What's on for Walpurgis?

in Bayern

Liebe leute,

Any residents know of good things happening in Bayern or Munich for Walpurgis? I'm too lazy to make it up to Berlin and light a car on fire; so want to know if anything's happening down here.

Ok. Another German Holiday. Walpurgis Nacht.
Had never heard of it before except in the opera Faust when Mefisopheles goes to the Witches Sabbath.
Hadn't really believed that it was a real holiday where stores close, etc.

Are we supposed to make loud noises to scare away the evil spirits?
QUOTE
The most widespread remedy against evil spirits during Walpurgisnacht is noise. As soon as the sun sets, boys of all ages may make noise. Their equipment ranges from boards to beat onto the ground to pistols for firing shots.

Ok, sorry. May Day is May first and that is the reason the stores are closing on Saturday.
Get your shopping done today folks. Tomorrow we got poles to climb. cool.gif

In Bavaria the night from April 30 to May 1 is called a Freinacht or Drudennacht. For youth it is an opportunity to play tricks. They may stroll in groups through the streets and wind toilet-paper around cars, smear door-handles with tooth-paste, unhinge garden doors and carry them a few meters away, and they may displace shoe scrapers. It is said that at one time boys took a sparred-frame cart to pieces and reassembled it on the roof of the house of the owner.

be careful, what started as a tradion is often abused by youngsters these days as an excuse for vandalism. So if u have a garage put your car into the garage and make sure your bike is safe in the house.
A few years ago a few kids tried to be funny and were scratching the cars with keys or spraying "art" on some expensive cars. Not nice!

Well, when I was a kid I remember sneaking out of the house in the middle of the night, scared shitless (of mum, when she'd find out) and hiding innocent things like bikes and flowerpots round the next corner or exchanging door mats, or taking the wodden shutters off the window (God were they heavy)... Those were the days.
Now I see these kids when i am walking home from the celebration in the middle of the night after tasting some lovely locally brewed beer and the oompah music still stirring my head smile.gif

The May Pole Setting is a great tradition though and I am looking forward to go home this afternoon to support the "men" of the village to set up the May Pole.
In my village though we don't dance around it.

my bf is from a town close to strasbourg and every year not only are dozens of cars set on fire in strasbourg, but some brave hooligans sneak their way across the border (to kehl) and set cars on fire there too! police never seem to catch anyone.

Last year I went to a Maibaum party which was quite nice. Anyone know of any villages nearby doing it this year?

Seems like nothin's happening especially for the Witches night tonight sad.gif

I think yesterday's AZ had a list of Maypole erections happening in and around Munich. Don't have a copy myself, sorry.

Serves those schickey mickey Müncheners right. I'm sure they can afford to have it fixed anyway. ph34r.gif

Big C, I am not from Munich. This happened in the well protected innocent countryside in a small village... No schicki micki there.
