In Bavaria the night from April 30 to May 1 is called a Freinacht or Drudennacht. For youth it is an opportunity to play tricks. They may stroll in groups through the streets and wind toilet-paper around cars, smear door-handles with tooth-paste, unhinge garden doors and carry them a few meters away, and they may displace shoe scrapers. It is said that at one time boys took a sparred-frame cart to pieces and reassembled it on the roof of the house of the owner.
be careful, what started as a tradion is often abused by youngsters these days as an excuse for vandalism. So if u have a garage put your car into the garage and make sure your bike is safe in the house.
A few years ago a few kids tried to be funny and were scratching the cars with keys or spraying "art" on some expensive cars. Not nice!
Well, when I was a kid I remember sneaking out of the house in the middle of the night, scared shitless (of mum, when she'd find out) and hiding innocent things like bikes and flowerpots round the next corner or exchanging door mats, or taking the wodden shutters off the window (God were they heavy)... Those were the days.
Now I see these kids when i am walking home from the celebration in the middle of the night after tasting some lovely locally brewed beer and the oompah music still stirring my head

The
May Pole Setting is a great tradition though and I am looking forward to go home this afternoon to support the "men" of the village to set up the May Pole.
In my village though we don't dance around it.
