All the ones I've ever been to are absolute shite. I know why they are called flea markets now. I went to a huge one in Pforzheim recently and people were selling absolute crap. I went to try and get some furniture to refinish, there was nothing worth having. People would sell their underwear here if they thought they could get away with it. There is a large antique market in Tongeren Belgium which is worth having a look at, I think it is held every weekend but this is antique stuff not general boot sale items.

You're right most Trödelmärkten here are crap mostly mobile covers and poor quality tools and electronic junk sad.gif and the remnants of house clearances, they used to better about 10 years ago, but now they are selling everything from clothes to fruit (although the authorities here are cracking down on them as they are not supposed to be selling "new" goods and if they do they have to prove where they have come from) if you want some really interesting stuff (especially furniture) head for Tongeren, it's very good, it's a real antique market, part of it's outdoors and there some large halls too, I've been there several times and there is a lot of quality stuff there, there only thing to bear in mind is you have to go early ...it's all over by 12:30 we used to leave here at about 07:00 to get there for 08:30am and if I remember correctly it's only on Sundays, but 'would be best to check as I'm not sure if it is on all year. Another good market is the Vogelmarket in Antwerp if you are within striking distance, again only Sundays, that's more of a general market and it's big but it does have a lot of antiques too.

Yes, I have noticed a decline in the standard of Trödel. The best ones seem to be on warm summer days when the occasional sellers are there with the contents of their cellar for sale. I think a lot of Trödel sellers have moved on to ebay over the past few years.

There are a couple of boot sales in the Duisburg area, but I've only been to the one opposite the football stadium in Wedau ("Sportpark") so far. That one is fairly big and it takes place on the first Saturday of each month, but there are mostly professional dealers there (in case that is a problem). Others that I know of are the ones in Ruhrort ("Innenhafen") and Homberg (Ruhrkohle AG) but I haven't been to those and I'm not sure when they are either.
